Alex Cottey

Perry Meridian

Description: This award goes to the wrestler who had the best season.

Breakdown: This award was tougher to give out this year, so I took the easy way out and gave it to the best senior wrestler. In my opinion it was really a two man race, and if we just picked the best overall wrestler each year it would just be Jesse Mendez getting it every year. I maily look at the seniors and East Central's Bryer Hall and Perry Meridian's Alex Cottey were my tow picks as far as seniors went. Bryer Hall killed everyone he wrestled this year and had really no competition this year, and has a solid argument to take home this award. In the end though I went with Alex Cottey. Cottey got hurt about three weeks out from the postseason and was forced to miss a lot of practcie and where and knee brace under a sleeve and pad. On top of that he gets knocked out at the semi-state ad has to default out to 4th place, which gave him a much tougher path to another state title, going through the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th best guys in the weight, in my opinion. Cottey cappped off an amazing career with a 4th trip to the finals and a second state title earning him the Hoosiermat Wrestler of The Year.
