LYDY BIG TEN W.O.W.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After taking home the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational 174-pound title Saturday, Purdue senior Dylan Lydy kept adding awards being named Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday by the conference office. Lydy knocked off four straight ranked wrestlers on his way to the top of the podium and remains undefeated at 14-0 this season, earning his second weekly conference honor of 2019.

After opening his tournament with a 15-5 major decision over Michigan's Max Maylor, Lydy went a full 11 minutes with Utah Valley's Kimball Bastian, earning an escape and a takedown in the final tie-break period to secure a 5-3 win, and defeating Bastian for the second time this season.

Lydy followed up with a 5-3 decision over Oklahoma's Anthony Mantanona, scoring takedowns in the second and third periods in the quarterfinal win before needing overtime to earn his wins in the semifinals and finals. Lydy took down No. 5 Michael Labriola of Nebraska in the semifinals, scoring a 3-1 win with a sudden-victory takedown, and then repeated the feat with an overtime takedown against No. 4 Bryce Steiert of Northern Iowa.

With 11 takedowns in the tournament Lydy climbed to 18th all-time at Purdue in the category, passing Colton Salazar and Luke Welch. He also pushed his career-win total to 94, good for a tie for 18th in program history with Eric Douglas and now six wins shy of becoming the 17th wrestler in school history to secure 100 career wins.

The Boilermakers have now earned three Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors in 2019, with Lydy earning two and freshman Kendall Coleman sharing the award in the first week of the season.
