We may have already seen the finals at this weight class last weekend at New Castle. Warren Central’s Brice Coleman has been dominant all year and even with a terrible draw he should roll to the finals. On the other side of the bracket, is probably the second-best kid in the tournament, East Central’s Bryer Hall. Hall has lost the last two matches against Coleman, the last one being by fall. Another wrestler in this weight is Danville’s Logan Boe who bring in a perfect record. Boe and Hall are scheduled to meet in the semis, with the winner facing Coleman. Coleman has 4th ranked Jordan Douglass, Attica, Friday night, then 3rd ranked Jonatan Kervin Saturday morning. In the semis he should Boonville’s Jordan Fulks, who took his first loss of the season this past weekend. Some good Frida night matches to watch are between Garrett Stuckman, Wawasee, and Lawrence Central’s Tyler Jones. Jones could pull out a 4 over 1 here. Stuckman is undefeated but due to him sitting most of the year he has not been tested much. Another good one at this weight happens n the bottom side of the bracket between Zionsville’s Shane Bates and Hobart’s Tyler Turley. Bates is having a surprisingly good season this year, and I look for it to continue into Saturday morning. Coleman finishes what he started and wins himself a state title this weekend.

This weight is a four-man race. There are four guys here that a way above the rest of the field. Those four are Greenfield-Central’s Cooper Noehre, Cathedral’s Elliott Rodgers, Evansville Mater Dei’s Eli Dickens, and Prairie Heights Isiah Levitz. Before I get the semi finals with those four, there are some big Friday night matches to look at first. Crown Point’s Noah Hollendonner wrestles Tytus Morrisett of Eastern (Greentown). Morrisett took his first two loses this past weekend finishing 4th at the semi-state. Hollendonner is as solid as it gets and must be the favorite here but despite what happened last weekend Morrisett is good enough  to pull the upset. The biggest coin flip match in this weight is between Columbus East’s Sam Morrill and Lawrenceburg’s Andrew Roth. Roth looked impressive this past weekend but has not been tested much this year. Morrill has wrestled tough guys all year, beating most of them. Back to the big four, I determined my state champion pick before the tournament even started based on the matchups. Here is my breakdown for the weight, in my opinion:

Eli Dickens beat Levitz and Rogers

Isiah Levitz beats Rogers

Cooper Noehre beats Levitz and Dickens

Elliott Rodgers beats Noehre

So, depending on how the bracket fell I already knew who I would pick to win this weight. In the semis Noehre beats Levitz and while its never smart to go against the champ, Dickens has had Rogers’s number this year and its hard for me to see that changing. In the finals we get a rematch of last years state semi finals where Noehre came out on top. I know that Dickens beat Noehre this off season but that was in a shorted match and has to be taken with a grain of salt. Noehre gets the title he let get away from him a year ago.

Plymouth’s Graham Calhoun comes in as the top ranked wrestler in this weight, with a win over the 2nd ranked Tristan Ruhlman, Bloomington South. There is a lot or parity at this weight, outside of Calhoun. This weight is full of coin flip matches on Friday night. The first being at the top of the bracket between Carmel’s Gabe Davin and Elkhart Memorial’s Clayton Lundy. Lundy pulled off the upset last weekend to punch his ticket downtown. Both these guys are strong and big for the weight. Davin has a good go to leg attack, and he has been able to consistently get it on everyone. Davin takes this match and gets a medal. The biggest Friday night match at this weight is between two top 5 guys at the weight. Braden Welch, Culver Academies, and Ruhlman are set to meet on Friday. Welch has had an unfortunate draw the last two years, drawing Castle’s Robert Deters last year. I look for Ruhlman to be too much for Welch and for the junior to get his first medal. Saturday morning matches on the bottom side of the bracket should be great. Evansville Mater Dei’s Gabe Sollars and Cathedral’s Tyler Wagner meet Saturday morning with a team title on the line. Sollars helps Mater Dei’s title hopes with a win here. Above them we get a rematch from Al Smith, where Ruhlman pinned Garret’s Clay Fielden in the quarterfinals. This was a weird match and I don’t see a similar result happening here. Mater Dei should hope Ruhlman wins here since Sollars has had his number giving them a good chance to end up in the finals. Up top Deters and Calhoun cruise to the finals, where Calhoun beats Deters. Calhoun wins a title in his senior campaign.

This is a weight you point to when arguing against random draws. 3 of the top 4 kids in the state are in the same quarter-bracket. A team title can be lost right here in the opening match of the weight. 2nd ranked Macartney Parkinson, Evansville Mater Dei, takes on top ranked Joseph Walker, Mishawaka, Friday. If Walker is healthy come Friday, he will win this weight, but if he looks like he did this past weekend, he will not win this match Friday. Everyone is speculating on how healthy he is, but no one knows but Walker and his coaches. Regardless the winner of this match has a tough one on Saturday morning against 4th ranked Mason Winner, Jay County. I don’t Winner is on the level of either of these guys and loses this match. Merrillville’s Khris Walton and Lutheran’s Hayden Filipovich should both win their matches Friday night and meet in the quarters. I look for Filipovich to win this match, due to having just a little more wrestling skill than Walton. Walton is a strong athlete though and can take this match from Filipovich. The winner loses to the Parkinson/Walker winner. At the bottom of the bracket Perry Meridian’s Aiden Warren and Columbus East’s Noah white should win setting up their third match this year. Warren has taken the first two and I don’t see that changing here. Below them we have two good Friday matches. NorthWood’s Jake Lone wrestle East Central’s Kole Viel on Friday. Lone is the favorite here but Viel is a big strong kid and could make it a match. Valparaiso’s Colin Kwiatkowski and Center Grove’s Drake Buchanan meet on Friday night and while Kwiatkowski is a returning state qualifier, he has not wrestled much top-level competition this year.  I think that will be his downfall here. Buchanan has wrestled some of the best kids in the state and that will be the difference here. Lone beats Buchanan again here setting up a semifinal match with Warren here. Sophomore Lone lost to Warren’s older brother and I see this Warren doing the same thing, making his first finals. In the finals we get a rematch of Warren and Parkinson, and not very many people have beaten Warren multiple times and I don’t see that changing here. The junior gets his first state title.

This weight is not a question about who will win, but whether Silas Allred, Shenandoah, will pin his way through. Allred has found an opponent who can finish a match with him, and I do not know if I see that changing this weekend. Outside of Allred, there’s another undefeated wrestler in this weight class. Mishawaka’s Jacob LaPlace has buzz sawed his way through much of the wrestlers he has face this season. I look for him to make a trip to the finals, even though he has a tough JD Farrell, Fishers, waiting for him in the semis. Outside of those three, there top quarter-bracket has a one of the better Friday night matches in this weight. Brownsburg’s Isaiah Street and Eli Pack, Culver Academies, wrestle to place and if Brownsburg wants any shot at winning ra team title they need to win this match because I see the winner here making the semis. I am taking the junior in this match and the next one against Mississinewa senior Kyler Funk. Silas decks LaPlace to win his second state title.

Chesterton’s Evan Bates started the year at 195 and was a lock to make the finals, now he is up at 220 and is a heavy favorite to win it. Bate rolled to a semi-state title a week ago and could do the same this weekend. Unfortunately for us the two best kids in this weight are on the same side of the bracket. North Montgomery’s Drew Webster brings in an undefeated record in the state finals and is currently ranked 2nd at this weight. Webster was looked at a favorite last year but would settle for 5th. Webster should meet Bates in the semifinals. The finals in this weight will happen in that match. At the top of the bracket we have a good Friday night match between Merrillville’s Jason Streck and Franklin Central’s Deshawn Young. Streck hit a big growth spurt, up from 170 a year ago. I look for Young’s size to give Streck issues and to ultimately be the difference here. In the next match you have a kid who started his career at 113, now up to 220 as a senior. North Posey’s Nathan Willman comes in with 1 loss on the year, which he avenged, and can make the finals. He will first have to beat Young, which I see happening. His semi-final opponent will be between the winner of Will Crider, Harrison (WL) and Cale Gray, Norwell. Gray brings in an undefeated record and is my pick to win this match, but Crider is tall and a tough match-up for anyone. Crider pulled off the “upset” a year ago tot make the semis, so he knows that it takes to win here. In the semis Bates over Webster and Gray over Willman. Bates rolls in the finals for his first state championship.

While it is hard to bet against the defending state champ, this is heavyweight, and anything can happen. Brownsburg Dorian Keys comes in to defend his state title from a year ago. The brackets did him no favors as he will have the only guy to really push him this year in the semifinals. Friday night has several matches that you will want to keep your eye on. Starting the top, Mooresville’s Robert Gentry wrestles Warren Central Dennis Hubbard on Friday night. Gentry has a win over Keys in the last year. I see Gentry taking this match. Another Friday night match to watch is at the bottom of the bracket between Highland’s Sam Perez and Western’s Braydon Erb. Erb has looked good since moving up from 220 and should eb the pick to win this match Friday. Keys and Irick should meet again in the semi-finals, and while I know it is unwise to pick against the champ, like 160, I see Irick winning this rematch. At the top of the bracket Portage’s Damari Dancy was a surprise state qualifier a year ago, This year, he a finals threat at his new weight class. I do not see him beating Monroe Central’s Logan Swallow, who is also unbeaten on the year. I look for Swallow to be the other finalist in this weight. Each Irick has done better than the previous one and I think Andrew gets the state title his brothers couldn’t.
