1/5 Alex Cottey Perry Meridian Description: This award goes to the wrestler who had the best season. Breakdown: This award was tougher to give out this year, so I took the easy way out and gave it to the best senior wrestler. In my opinion it was really a two man race, and if we just picked the best overall wrestler each year it would just be Jesse Mendez getting it every year. I maily look at the seniors and East Central's Bryer Hall and Perry Meridian's Alex Cottey were my tow picks as far as seniors went. Bryer Hall killed everyone he wrestled this year and had really no competition this year, and has a solid argument to take home this award. In the end though I went with Alex Cottey. Cottey got hurt about three weeks out from the postseason and was forced to miss a lot of practcie and where and knee brace under a sleeve and pad. On top of that he gets knocked out at the semi-state ad has to default out to 4th place, which gave him a much tougher path to another state title, going through the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th best guys in the weight, in my opinion. Cottey cappped off an amazing career with a 4th trip to the finals and a second state title earning him the Hoosiermat Wrestler of The Year. - New Castle SS Preview
By: Sam Gobeyn This Saturday, 224 of the best wrestlers from Central and Eastern Indiana will descend upon the storied New Castle fieldhouse to duke it out for a chance to wrestle for a state championship at Bankers Life Fieldhouse next weekend. There will be a crazy amount of high profile matches, so keep reading below to see what you should be watching out for tomorrow when the chaos begins…. 106 Ranked Wrestlers: #1 Alex Cottey #4 Carleton Perry #5 Suhas Chundi #12 Elijah Anthony #13 Logan Carrender #15 Kody Glithero Breakdown : This crop of 106s should get the tournament off to a very exciting start, as this weight is absolutely loaded. The top quarter bracket features number one ranked, undefeated Alex Cottey of Perry Meridian. He should not be challenged this weekend, as he has beaten most of these guys handily during the regular season. The next quarter bracket is one of the most interesting as we will most likely see a ticket round match between 12th ranked freshman Elijah Anthony of Frankfort and 13th ranked Logan Carrender of Lawrence North. Carrender has been on a tear this postseason, winning his regional with all tech falls. Anthony was undefeated going into sectionals, but has suffered two decision losses to 5th ranked Chundi at sectionals and regionals. I like Anthony to win a nail biter here. The next quarter bracket features 4th ranked Carleton Perry of Warren Central, who has had a great first season in the lineup. Look for him to punch his ticket here without too much of a challenge. Then in the final quarter bracket, I expect 5th ranked Chundi and 15th ranked Glithero to be a very closely contested match. Chundi defeated him 5-2 at team state, and I expect him to get over the hump here and punch his ticket to Bankers Life next weekend. After the ticket round, results from this season so far would indicate that we will see a rematch between Cottey and Perry in the finals. Look for Cottey to win a low scoring, but controlled decision. Toughest Ticket Round #12 Elijah Anthony vs #13 Logan Carrender Hoosier Mat Top 4 Alex Cottey Carleton Perry Suhas Chundi Elijah Anthony 113 Ranked Wrestlers: #2 Zeke Seltzer #3 David Pierson #14 Antonio Jefferson #15 Jacob Simone Breakdown : This weight isn’t quite as deep as the other but it does feature two of the premier wrestlers in the state at this weight class, in Pierson and Seltzer. In the top quarter bracket, don’t expect Seltzer to be challenged in his probable ticket round match with Haggerty of Perry Meridian. Haggerty is very tough and has had a great season, but Seltzer is on a different level. The second quarter bracket should be a little more interesting. The 1 seed with in this quarter bracket is Spencer Gordon of Lawrenceburg, and he will most likely meet Christian White of New Palestine in the ticket round. They each have similar record, with four losses a piece, but I expect White to come out on top in this one as he has wrestled more quality competition this season. The third quarter bracket should be won pretty easily by returning ticket rounder and regional champion Jacob Simone of HSE, as the three other wrestlers in his quarter bracket are underclassmen without semi-state experience. The final quarter bracket at this weight class should feature a great ticket round matchup between returning placer David Pierson and 15th ranked Antonio Jefferson of Lawrence Central. Despite what the rankings say, look for this match to be very competitive. Their match in the Marion County finals was tied until the third period when Pierson got on top and blew the match open. Although I ultimately have Pierson coming out on top in this matchup, look out for this one being a potential upset. In regards to this weight class as a whole, don’t expect Seltzer to be challenged much. He defeated Pierson 5-0 at the beginning of the year, and he has been wrestling even better as of late. Toughest Ticket Round #3 David Pierson vs #14 Antonio Jefferson Hoosier Mat Top 4 Zeke Seltzer David Pierson Jacob Simone Christian White 120 Ranked Wrestlers: #3 Brayden Lowery #7 Carson Eldred #10 Chris Stewart #20 Harrison Hadley Breakdown : Similar to 113, this weight is not super deep but it still has its share of elite guys. In the top quarter bracket, returning state semi-finalist Carson Eldred should punch his ticket handily, as the quarter bracket does not feature another ranked wrestler. Two loss Willie Dennison of Anderson will be game, but look for Eldred to win convincingly. The same goes for the next quarter bracket, as undefeated Brayden Lowery should punch his ticket without too much of a challenge. However, the next quarter bracket should have some fire works, as two loss Traye Owens of New Castle and 10th ranked Christ Stewart of Warren Central should battle in the ticket round. Despite the incredible record on Owens, I like Stewart to win this match due to the great competition he has faced this year. Almost all of his losses are to top ranked guys, and I think all that experience in tough matches will pay off here. This final quarter bracket should be very interesting, Logan Galbraith of North Central and Parker Mosley of North Montgomery should face off. Galbraith, a regional qualifier last year, has been a great surprise this year, amassing a solid 21-3 record and a regional title in the process. Mosley also has a great record this year, and as a returning ticket rounder he will be looking to finally punch his ticket this year. I lean slightly towards Galbraith here based on strength of schedule, and more quality wins this season. After the ticket round, I think that the two best wrestlers in the bracket will meet in the semis when Lowery and Eldred wrestle, with Lowery coming out on top. On the bottom half of the bracket, look for Stewart to advance to the finals, before losing another close match to Brayden Lowery. Toughest Ticket Round Traye Owens vs #10 Chris Stewart Hoosier Mat Top 4 Brayden Lowery Chris Stewart Carson Eldred Logan Galbraith 126 Ranked Wrestlers: #4 Lukasz Walendzak #7 Logan Wagner #9 Jevian Ross #11 Chase Wilkerson #17 Cameron Toole Breakdown: This is an extremely interesting weight because a lot has happened these past two weeks since the rankings were finalized. The top quarter bracket is one that could go a couple different ways. This weight class features 4th ranked Lukasz Walendzak as a three seed. He had a great Al Smith tournament, but since suffering what appeared to be a pretty serious injury against Roncall, he has suffered a couple of losses. His first round match will be against solid 17th ranked Cameron Toole of Lebanon. If he gets past Toole, which I expect him too, he will face off against undefeated Grant Stapleton of Lawrenceburg. Despite some his losses the last two weeks, look for Walendzak to bring his “A” game and come out of this quarter bracket. The next quarter bracket should feature a ticket round between two wrestlers with a lot of momentum right now, in Sam Slivka of Roncalli and Jared Brown of Pendleton Heights. Slivka is coming off a great weekend in which he defeated Jevian Ross in the regional finals. Brown is coming off of a great weekend as well, where he defeated Walendzak and then lost in the finals to Wilkerson. Both of these guys seem to be pretty evenly matched, but I expect Slivka to come out on top due to the momentum he has coming into this match. The third quarter bracket should also feature a very high profile ticket round match, this one between #9 Jevian Ross and #11 Chase Wilkerson. Ross defeated Wilkerson by fall earlier this season, however Wilkerson has had a great two weekends of wrestling and the momentum is on his side. Look for the senior Wilkerson to punch his ticket here in a barn burner. In the final quarter bracket, don’t expect there to be much drama as 7th ranked Logan Wagner should run through this quarter bracket in relatively dominant fashion. Looking past the ticket round, the semi-final between Logan Wagner and the Ross/Wilkerson winner should be a good one. In the top semi-final, look for Walendzak to control the winner of Slivka/Brown. In the finals I expect Wagner to defeat Walendzak. The two split matches at Al Smith but Wagner is wrestling really well right now, having a great conference tournament and winning his sectional and regional with no challenge. The winner of this weight will set themselves up nicely for next weekend. Toughest Ticket Round #9 Jevian Ross vs #11 Chris Wilkerson Hoosier Mat Top 4 Logan Wagner Lukasz Walendzak Chris Wilkerson Sam Slivka 132 Ranked Wrestlers: #2 Alec Viduya #5 Logan Bailey #14 Seth Johnson Breakdown: Starting in the top quarter bracket here, I expect to see unranked Milo Merkel of Westfield come out on top here. He has had a solid season so far, amassing a 27-9 record on the very tough Westfield schedule. He should see regional champion Hunter Brown in the ticket round. Although Brown has a better record than Merkel, at 26-3, he hasn’t seen nearly as much top notch competition which is why I expect Merkel to come out on top here. Going down to the second quarter bracket, we should see a good ticket round match between 5th ranked Logan Bailey and Andre Beatty of Warren Central. Bailey has proven to be just as dangerous as he was last year despite moving up 4 weight classes. Look for him to win a controlled decision here against a very tough Beatty. Moving down to the third quarter bracket, I expect 2017 state champion Alec Viduya to be utterly dominant as he will not face a ranked opponent until the semis. Then, in the final quarter bracket, look for 2017 4th placer Seth Johnson to punch his ticket back to Bankers Life. Sebastian Bryant of North Central has had a solid season, but look for Johnson to win convincingly here. After the ticket round, I expect ranking to hold and Alec Viduya to win pretty convincingly over both Johnson and Bailey. Toughest Ticket Round #5 Logan Bailey vs Andre Beatty Hoosier Mat Top 4 Alec Viduya Logan Bailey Seth Johnson Milo Merkel 138 Ranked Wrestlers: #4 Tyce Freije #6 Gabe Smith #8 Gabe Phillips #12 Kyle Hollman #13 Jared Rowlett #16 Chris Wilkerson #17 Andrew Wilson Breakdown: This weight starts a streak of absolutely brutal middleweight brackets this weekend at New Castle. This first quarter bracket is definitely the least deep as Chris Wilkerson is the only guy here ranked in the state or semi state. Look for him to punch his second ticket to state with relative ease here. Moving down we will see 4th ranked Tyce Freije of Roncalli here. He will face off against either Reece Luhman or Adam Negangard. However, I don’t see who he faces making much of a difference, as he has been on a tear as of late and looks poised to make a deep run these next few weekends. Moving down we will see a great ticket round match between two seniors, in #6 Gabe Smith and #12 Kyle Hollman. Both of these guys have had great seasons and it is a shame that one of their seasons will end here. Ultimately, I see Smith coming out on top here. He has had some great matches the past few weekends with Freije and has improved a lot as the season has went on. The last quarter bracket here is absolutely insane. The first match here will be between 8th ranked undefeated Gabe Phillips and 2018 ticket rounder Chase Poynter of Zionsville. Records would indicate that this match will not be close, however look for this to be a very close match, as Zionsville has a much tougher schedule. The second match in this quarter bracket will be between two state qualifiers, as Andrew Wilson vs Jared Rowlett will face off. Look for Wilson to come out of this quarter bracket and be Cathedral’s annual surprise qualifier. I expect the finals here to be a rematch between Tyce Freije and Gabe Smith for the 3rd weekend in a row, with Freije coming out on top once again in a hard fought decision. Toughest Ticket Round #6 Gabe Smith vs #12 Kyle Hollman Hoosier Mat Top 4 Tyce Freije Gabe Smith Andrew Wilson Chris Wilkerson 145 Ranked Wrestlers: #2 Bryer Hall #3 Alex Mosconi #4 Aiden Warren #5 Antuan Graves #6 Jeff Dunasky #18 Terrell Leavell Breakdown: This weight class is probably the best in any semi state across the state, as it features 5 of the top 6 wrestlers in the state. Thankfully, none of the guys in the top 5 will meet in the ticket round here. One of the two ticket round matches that are very interesting in my opinion is #5 Antuan Graves vs #6 Jeff Dunasky. Rankings-wise this should be a great match, but in reality I think we will see Graves win pretty dominantly here. The other great ticket round match here will be between #2 Bryer Hall and #18 Terrell Leavell. Leavell, defeated #6 Dunasky last weekend in a very controlled decision. Although on paper this matchup should not be close, Leavell holds a freestyle win over Hall and will not go down without a fight. Despite all this I still expect Hall to win this match and then drop a tight one in the semi-finals in a rematch to Antuan Graves. On the other side of the bracket, look for Mosconi to beat Warren for the 3rd time this season in a close one. Both semi-finals and placement round could go so many different ways, and I am really looking forward to seeing how it plays out. Although all of these guys are capable of winning a state title this year, none of them will want to finish 4th and risk a Friday night match with Nick Lee, so look for that 3rd place match to have a little more intensity than usual. Toughest Ticket Round #5 Antuan Graves vs #6 Jeff Dunasky Hoosier Mat Top 4 Alex Mosconi Antuan Graves Aiden Warren Bryer Hall 152 Ranked Wrestlers: #2 Elliot Rodgers #3 Cooper Noehre #4 Brice Coleman #6 Sam Fair #15 Tytus Ragle #19 Easton Williamson Breakdown: In my opinion this weight class features the worst ticket round draw in the entire state, as #2 Elliot Rodgers and #4 Brice Coleman should meet in the ticket round. This is one of those matches that the fans will really enjoy watching, but at the end of the day is a huge bummer as one of the top wrestlers in the state will end their season at New Castle. Coleman has had a great season, having wins over Conley, Noehre and Fair. However, look for his run to end here as he will face returning state runner-up Elliot Rodgers of Cathedral. Rodgers has been great so far this year, only suffering one loss, and I expect him to take his wrestling up another level during the postseason like he has the past two years. This match isn’t just huge for the individuals, but it is also huge for Cathedral as a team. If they are going to repeat as state champions next weekend, they need Rodgers to win here. The next quarter bracket should feature a great ticket round matchup between Sam Fair and Gabe Davin of Carmel. We slept on Gabe Davin in our rankings but he has had a great two weekends, winning both sectional and regional in convincing fashion. However, Fair has much more experience in these kinds of matches and I expect him to show it here. This third quarter bracket is incredibly interesting as well. In my opinion this quarter bracket is anyone’s for the taking. All of the guys in this bracket are solid, but I expect Otto to come out on top here as he is the only one here with ticket round experience and has also had a very solid season thus far. Then, in the bottom bracket, look for Cooper Noehre to win pretty easily. He has been on an absolute tear this season I expect it to continue this weekend. I think the finals match here will be a rematch between Rodgers and Noehre. It was an overtime victory for Rodgers and I expect this to be another battle, with Noehre getting one back here. Toughest Ticket Round #2 Elliot Rodgers vs #4 Brice Coleman Hoosier Mat Top 4 Cooper Noehre Elliot Rodgers Sam Fair Zach Otto 160 Ranked Wrestlers: #2 Jordan Slivka #3 Brooks Davis #10 Jake Lowe #13 Hayden Lohrey #17 Bradley Harrington #18 Aaron Taylor #19 Ronan Hiner Breakdown: This is a pretty straight forward weight class, as far as New Castle weights go. The top quarter bracket should feature a great match between #10 Jake Lowe vs #17 Bradley Harrington. This match will most likely be a low scoring battle, and I expect Lowe to come out on top. The next quarter bracket features #13 Hayden Lohrey of Shenandoah. He should get through this quarter bracket relatively unchallenged as he is the only ranked wrestler here. The next quarter bracket features 2nd ranked Jordan Slivka, 18th ranked Aaron Taylor and 19th ranked Ronan Hiner. This is a great quarter bracket but Slivka should win pretty easily. The final quarter bracket features 3rd ranked Brooks Davis, and he is the only ranked wrestler in this quarter bracket. Look for him to win this quarter bracket convincingly to set up an Al Smith rematch with Slivka in the semi finals. This will be the premier match of the weight class, and I expect Slivka to win another close battle. Their Al Smith finals match went to overtime, with Slivka winning in ride outs. Look for Slivka to widen the gap a little bit here, as he seems to wrestle better in the postseason every year. Then, in the finals, look for Slivka to turn in a dominant performance over Lohrey. Toughest Ticket Round #10 Jake Lowe vs #17 Bradley Harrington Hoosier Mat Top 4 Jordan Slivka Hayden Lohrey Brooks Davis Jake Lowe 170 Ranked Wrestlers: #4 Elijah Mahan #7 Logan Hart #8 Cody Klettheimer #9 Tucker Coffman #11 Josh Lowe #12 Kyle Saez #17 Tyler Wagner Breakdown: The first quarter bracket here should feature a solid ticket round match between #12 Kyle Saez and #17 Tyler Wagner. Saez has definitely had a better season, notching quite a few great wins, but you can’t discount how well Cathedral peaks their wrestlers this time of the year. However, still look for Saez to win this one, as he has a lot of momentum coming off of a regional title last weekend. In the next quarter bracket, look for 2nd ranked Elijah Mahan to coast through the ticket round and punch his second ticket to state. The next quarter bracket should feature a great ticket round match between 9th ranked Tucker Coffman and 11th ranked Josh Lowe. Both of them have great records and won’t want to end their senior season in the ticket round. Ultimately, I expect Coffman to win here due to his experience in the state tournament. The final quarter bracket should feature a great ticket round matchup between 7th ranked Logan Hart and 8th ranked Cody Klettheimer. Hart lost a close match in the ticket round last year and will be extra motivated to try to make it in his senior year. Klettheimer is a two time qualifier and one time placer, so he has a lot of experience in this round which could be a factor in this matchup. I’m going to go with Hart on this one, but nothing would surprise me here. After the ticket round, look for Mahan to win in the top semifinal and also look for the winner of Hart/Klettheimer to win the other semifinal. In the finals, I expect Mahan to be in postseason form and get the win, setting himself up nicely for next weekend at Bankers Life. Toughest Ticket Round #7 Logan Hart vs #8 Cody Klettheimer Hoosier Mat Top 4 Elijah Mahan Logan Hart Tucker Coffman Kyle Saez 182 Ranked Wrestlers: #8 Cameron Bacon #14 Jalen Morgan Breakdown: Starting at the top quarter bracket, there are no ranked wrestlers here. However, Farrell has had a great season and I think he will win a close match against one loss Hayden Filipovich of Indianapolis Lutheran in the ticket round. Moving down to the second quarter bracket, we should see two semi state qualifiers, Sterrett and Combs collide here. They have similar records, but I lean slightly towards Sterrett here based off of strength of schedule. In the third quarter bracket, 8th ranked Cameron Bacon of Carmel should be sitting pretty here as he does not have another ranked wrestler in his weight class. He has had a great season so far with his only loss coming to second ranked Bellamy. Look for him to get through the ticket round pretty dominantly. The final quarter bracket is very similar to the previous one, with 14th ranked returning state qualifier Jalen Morgan being the only ranked wrestler here. Look for him to punch his ticket here fairly easily. The potential semi final between Bacon and Morgan should be the premier match up of the weight class. I think Bacon is wrestling really well right now, and like him to come out with the victory in this match, and in the tournament as a whole. Toughest Ticket Round PJ Sterrett vs Jake Combs Hoosier Mat Top 4 Cameron Bacon JD Farrell Jalen Morgan PJ Sterrett 195 Ranked Wrestlers: #1 Silas Allred #7 Jack Heldt #8 Austin Lane #12 KJ Roudebush #14 Tremor Bynum Breakdown: This weight features a lot of depth, including the 5th ranked wrestler in the country in Silas Allred. Starting in the top quarter bracket, the likely ticket round matchup between Heldt and Roudebush should be a good one. Both of them are seniors, looking to make their first appearance at state, so look for it to be a very intense match. I lean slightly towards Roudebush here, based on experience. Moving on to the next quarter bracket, look for 8th ranked Austin Lane to coast to the semifinals. He has had an impressive season, including an Al Smith and Regional title, and expect him to keep the momentum going here. In the third quarter bracket, we should see 14th ranked Tremor Bynum punch his second ticket, as he is the only wrestler in his quarter bracket with semi state experience. Then, in the final quarter bracket, we will see 1st ranked Silas Allred. His quarter bracket also lacks anyone with semi state experience, so we will most likely see him dominate here. In regards to the semi finals, I like Austin Lane to beat Roudebush in the semis, before ultimately falling to Allred in the finals. Toughest Ticket Round #7 Jack Heldt vs #12 KJ Roudebush Hoosier Mat Top 4 Silas Allred Austin Lane Tremor Bynum KJ Roudebush 220 Ranked Wrestlers: #1 Andrew Irick #4 Kyle Cornwell #7 Drew Webster #18 David Guhl #19 Deshawn Young #20 Haakon Van Beyen Breakdown: Another great weight this weekend, featuring 3 legitimate title contenders. The top quarter bracket should feature a ticket round matchup between 4th ranked Kyle Cornwell and 20th ranked Van Beyen. Look for Cornwell to win convincingly here, punching his third ticket to state. In the next quarter bracket, we should see a ticket round matchup between #1 ranked Andrew Irick and #18 David Guhl. Irick has had a great season so far and I expect him to continue his winning ways here. In the third quarter bracket we should see a ticket round matchup between #7 Drew Webster and #19 Deshawn Young. This should be a competitive match, but I expect Webster to come out on top, on the heels of a huge weekend where he pinned #1 Irick. In the final quarter bracket, look for Cullen Browning to cruise to the semis. Now, after the ticket round is where this weight gets really interesting. Irick and Cornwell should meet in the semis, which is a matchup that Irick has won twice this year. Should Irick win a third time, he could see Webster, who he is 1-1 against, for a third time. I think this is the most likely scenario with this time Irick getting the victory. This weight should be a great preview of what to expect next weekend at state. Toughest Ticket Round #7 Drew Webster vs #19 Deshawn Young Hoosier Mat Top 4 Andrew Irick Drew Webster Kyle Cornwell Cullen Browning 285 Ranked Wrestlers: #1 Jamichael Watts #5 Crae Kunkleman #8 Dennis Hubbard #10 John Harris #14 Antone Alexander #20 Zach McQueen Breakdown: Last but not least, the heavyweights. This years heavyweight class features 6 ranked wrestlers including 3 in the top 8. In the top quarter bracket, we could see a ticket round matchup between 10th ranked John Harris and 20th ranked Zach McQueen. Look for Harris to get through this quarter bracket fairly easily. He is battle tested this season, having has amassed an excellent 32-2 record, and should keep that going through the ticket round.. Moving down our second quarter bracket has no ranked wrestlers, but look for Kolt Keller of Clinton Central to make his way through after having a great weekend winning the North Montgomery Regional. The next quarter bracket features a great first round matchup between 5th ranked Crae Kunkleman and 14th ranked Antone Alexander. The winner of this match should win in the ticket round and I expect it to be Kunkleman. In the final quarter bracket 1st ranked Jamichael Watts and 8th ranked Dennis Hubbard will most likely wrestle in the ticket round. Watts is undefeated this season, and I don’t think that streak ends this weekend. Expect to see Watts kind of run through this weight Saturday, and position himself well for a state title next weekend. Toughest Ticket Round #1 Jamichael Watts vs #8 Dennis Hubbard Hoosier Mat Top 4 Jamichael Watts John Harris Kolt Keller Crae Kunkleman Predictions Overview Cathedral (7) Perry Meridian (6) Roncalli (6) Warren Central (5) Carmel (3) North Montgomery (3) Westfield (3) Mount Vernon (3) New Castle SS Preview BACK
- PARRIS CAPTURES CKLV TITLE
ARTICLES PARRIS CAPTURES CKLV TITLE LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Sophomore Mason Parris captured the heavyweight crown to headline the No. 22-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team's performance at the 38th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, which wrapped Saturday (Dec. 7) at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The Wolverines took 16th (37.5 points) behind the efforts of two placewinners and five point scorers. Parris, the tournament's top seed and ranked second nationally by InterMat, used a pair of first-period takedowns to claim a 6-3 decision against Arizona State's sixth-ranked Tanner Hall in the championship match. The Wolverine captain struck on a single leg less than 20 seconds into the bout, scrambled to another takedown off a crotch-lock off a dump attempt and rode for 1:03 time advantage. Hall's best chance came on a low single shot in the final 30 seconds of the third. Parris scrambled out and ended the match in deep on a leg attack of his own. Parris also earned a 6-1 decision over Nebraska's 12th-ranked Christian Lance in the morning semifinal round, similarly behind two first-period takedowns and 4:16 riding-time advantage. Parris captured his first Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational crown in his first appearance at the annual tournament. He is Michigan's fourth CKLV champion in three years, joining Myles Amine (174, 2018), Alec Pantaleo (157, 2017) and Adam Coon (Hwt, 2017). Parris improved 15-0 on the season and boasts eight wins over nationally-ranked opposition. Junior/sophomore Jelani Embree, seeded ninth at 184 pounds, settled for an eighth-place finish after winning his first consolation bout of the day then suffering an early first-period injury in his second and defaulting out of the tournament. Embree converted on takedowns in the first and second periods, including a slick duck under and rideout in the late opening frame, to defeat Minnesota's 19th-ranked Owen Webster, 5-2, to lock up his spot on the podium. He finished with a 4-2 record over two days. Junior/sophomore Jack Medley and freshman Cole Mattin dropped decision losses in the day's first round of wrestlebacks to just miss out on placing in their CKLV debuts. Medley fell to Ohio State's Malik Heinselman, 7-3, after the Buckeye iced the bout with a late takedown. Mattin sacrificed a third-period lead in a 4-3 loss to Northern Iowa's Michael Blockhus, who finished on a takedown midway through the final frame and ride out for the win. The Wolverines are done for the semester and will take a break from competition for final exams and the holidays before resuming dual-meet action on Sunday, Jan. 5 against Oregon State. The dual is slated for a 4 p.m. start at Cliff Keen Arena and it will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network. Tickets are still available through the U-M Ticket Office.

- East Chicago Semi-State Preview
106 This weight is headlined by River Forest’s Jeffrey Bailey who a lot of people believe is the best guy at the weight in the state. In his path for a semi-state title he will have to beat a guy who gave him a close match earlier this year in Crown Point freshman Evan Cruz. Bailey beat Cruz in OT earlier this year. First Cruz must get past Liam Siburcrist, North White, who brings in the only undefeated record at this weight. Cruz has been tested this year and I see that being the difference as he punches his ticket here. In the finals he should have LaPorte’s Ashton Jackson who has looked good this postseason. I have Bailey winning this weight though as he makes a return trip to the Bank. Look for McCutcheon junior Jake Stall to make trio downtown as well. 2019 Champ: Sam Goin-Crown Point Ranked Wrestlers: #5 Jeffrey Bailey-River Forest #9 Ashton Jackson-LaPorte #10 Johnny Cortez-Lake Central #16 Evan Cruz-Crown Point #20 Jake Stall-McCutcheon Best First Round Match(es): Liam Siburcrist, North White vs Lukas Tsirtsis, Munster Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Evan Cruz, Crown Point vs Tsirtsis/Siburcrist winner Jeffrey Bailey, River Forest vs Johnny Cortez, Lake Central Dylan Bennett, Penn vs Jake Stall, McCutcheon Ashton Jackson, LaPorte vs E’Shawn Tolbert, Portage HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Jeffrey Bailey-River Forest 2. Ashton Jackson-LaPorte 3. Evan Cruz-Crown Point 4. Jake Stall-McCutcheon 113 This is a wide open weight that can be won by anyone who shows up to wrestle. Hobart’s Trevor Schammert brings in a perfect record and looks to pinch his ticket. Schammert has a tough freshman to get through in Chesterton’s Hayden DeMarco. DeMarco has been tested and has some solid wins this year. I look for Hayden to qualify a year sooner than his brother did. Anthony Bahl, Crown Point, is a guy who could either win this weight or not make It out, due to his style, but he is my pick to take this weight class. Two freshmen will battle it out in Munster’s Christopher Bohn and West Central’s Drake Fritz. I give the nod to Fritz here. The last guy making the trip will be another freshman in Penn’s Bryce Denton. Denton has a tossup match in the ticket but I’m going with the “better” program to pull it out. 2019 Champ: Logan Frazier-Crown Point Ranked Wrestlers: #9 Anthony Bahl-Crown Point #13 Trevor Schammert-Hobart #18 Hayden DeMarco-Chesterton Best First Round Match(es): David Maldonado, Merrillville vs Hunter Miller, Wawasee Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Trevor Schammert, Hobart vs Hayden DeMarco, Chesterton Bryce Denton, Penn vs Mikkel Cunningham, North Newton Anthony Bahl, Crown Point vs Miller/Maldonado winner Christopher Bohn, Munster vs Drake Fritz, West Central HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Anthony Bahl-Crown Point 2. Hayden DeMarco-Chesterton 3. Christopher Bohn-Munster 4. Bryce Denton-Penn 120 Crown Point’s Logan Frazier and Chesterton’s Sergio Lemley should buzzsaw their way through this weight class to set up another matchup in the finals. Wrestling for the other two spots in this weight, freshman Elaezar Walker, Mishawaka, has looked good the second half of the season and is peaking at the right time. I don't see him having too much trouble punching his ticket. The best ticket round match in this weight will be between Wawasee junior Dylan Tom and Seeger senior Nate Hennessy. Looking just at the records you would lean for Hennessy, but Tom has wrestled better guys this year and I see that as the difference in this match. 2019 Champ: Giovanni Diaz-Wheeler Ranked Wrestlers: #1 Sergio Lemley-Chesterton #2 Logan Frazier-Crown Point #17 Eleazar Walker-Mishawaka Best First Round Match(es): Dominic Skees, Lafayette Central Catholic vs Logan Frazier, Crown Point Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Eleazar Walker, Mishawaka vs Tristan Vaughn, Harrison(WL) Nate Hennessy, Seeger vs Dylan Tom, Wawasee HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Sergio Lemley-Chesterton 2. Logan Frazier-Crown Point 3. Eleazar Walker-Mishawaka 4. Dylan Tom-Wawasee 126 The two best kids in this weight might be on the same side of the bracket. Crown Point’s Sam Goin missed some time this year with injury but looks back to form in this postseason run. Goin should have no trouble punching his ticket here setting up a match with another state placer in Merrillvile’s Malik Hall. Hall is tough but Goin goes on to win here and secure his second semi-state title. On the other side of the bracket is another guy familiar with Bankers Life, Valparaiso’s Stefan Vitello. Vitello got a better draw, in my opinion, dropping a match last weekend. The last guy making it through here was a state champion a year ago in South Carolina, which is Penn’s Matteo Vargo. The verdict is still out in just how good he is due to the limited amount we’ve seen him this year. Vargo has a tough task in getting past Kankakee Valley’s Caleb Solomey in the ticket round, but Solomey is too uo and down for me to pick him here. 2019 Champ: Stephen Roberson-Crown Point Ranked Wrestlers: #4 Sam Goin-Crown Point #8 Malik Hall-Merrillville #9 Matteo Vargo-Penn #15 Stefan Vitello-Valparaiso Best First Round Match(es): Malik Hall, Merrillville vs Matt Adamczyk, Hebron Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Matteo Vargo, Penn vs Caleb Solomey, Kankakee Valley Malik Hall, Merrillville vs Brodie Fogarty, Mishawaka Sam Goin, Crown Point vs Dominic Smith, Plymouth HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Sam Goin-Crown Point 2. Matteo Vargo-Penn 3. Malik Hall-Merrillville 4. Stefan Vitello-Valparaiso 132 For whatever reason Chesterton’s Aidan Torres just cannot beat Stephen Roberson, Crown Point. I believe Roberson has beaten Torres 8 times in the past 2 years, and while Torres beats pretty much everyone else he hasn’t figured out this one. Torres and Roberson should meet in the finals for their 9th match of the series and you have to pick Roberson here due to their history. Their semi-finals opponents should be Portage move in Jack Coyle, who was a state placer in Illinois a year ago, and Rensselaer Central’s Lakin Webb. Two bracket busters here could be Kankakee Valley’s Cole Solomey, who is a returning state placer, and Penn freshman Wesley Harper. 2019 Champ: Jesse Mendez-Crown Point Ranked Wrestlers: #3 Aidan Torres-Chesterton #7 Jack Coyle-Portage #8 Stephen Roberson-Crown Point #15 Cole Solomey-Kankakee Valley #20 Lakin Webb-Rensselaer Central Best First Round Match(es): Jordan Lear, West Lafayette vs Aidan Torres, Chesterton Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Jack Coyle, Portage vs Cole Solomey, Kankakee Valley Lakin Webb, Rensselaer Central vs Wesley Harper, Penn HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Stephen Roberson-Crown Point 2. Aidan Torres-Chesterton 3. Jack Coyle-Portage 4. Lakin Webb-Rensselaer Central 138 This weight belongs to returning 2-time state champion Jesse Mendez, Crown Point. Mendez won’t have any close matches this weekend similar to the rest of his matches this year. The next best kid in this bracket is Jace Alexander, Wawasee, who unfortunately will have Mendez in the ticket round. The best ticket round match will happen uo top with returning state qualifier Bradley Conrad, Portage, meeting Mishawaka’s Andrew Sinkovics in the ticket round. I’ve been high on Sinkovics for years now and I’m making this pick with my heart and saying the Caveman makes a trip to the Bank. Chesterton’s schedule will be the difference in why Ethan Contreras qualifies in his senior season. 2019 Champ: Ethan Kaiser-Chesterton Ranked Wrestlers: #1 Jesse Mende-Crown Point #4 Jace Alexander-Wawasee #9 Bradley Conrad-Portage Best First Round Match(es): Daniel Kooi, Munster vs Andrew Kline, Lafayette Central Catholic Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Bradley Conrad, Portage vs Andrew Sinkovics, Mishawaka Ethan Contreras, Chesterton vs Kyle Carter, Rensselaer Central HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Jesse Mendez-Crown Point 2. Andrew Sinkovics-Mishawaka 3. Jace Alexander-Wawasee 4. Ethan Contreras-Chesterton 145 Ethan Kaiser, Chesterton, looks to claim his second semi-state title this weekend. Looking at the field, I think he pulls it off. Outside of Kaiser, this weight is wide open with several guys coming in battle tested. Mishawaka junior Cameron Powell has a deceiving record but he has wrestled, and beaten, a lot of tough guys this year. Look for him to ask it out. West Central’s Braden Nuest comes in having only dropped two matches on the year and while his section of the bracket is a crapshoot, I give him the nod here. However I wouldn’t be surprised if Calumet’s Kaden Armstrong beat him to punch his ticket. Alex Cornejo, Portage, is looking to join his brother as a state qualifier but will have a tough freshman in Kenneth Bisping, in the opening round. 2019 Champ: Brock Ellis-Chesterton Ranked Wrestlers: #12 Ethan Kaiser-Chesterton Best First Round Match(es): Ethan Kaiser, Chesterton vs Trevor Tirana, Hobart Alex Cornejo, Portage vs Kenneth Bisping, Lowell Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Cameron Powell, Mishawaka vs Tyler Tillema, Kankakee Valley Kaden Armstrong, Calumet vs Braden Nuest, West Central HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Ethan Kaiser-Chesterton 2. Cameron Powell-Mishawaka 3. Alex Cornejo-Portage 4. Braden Nuest-West Central 152 Javen Estrada, Crown Point, has looked great all year and is on the short list for a state title this year. Estrada already has a pin over who people would agree is the next best guy in this weight, Chesterton’s Brock Ellis, so I see him having little trouble winning this weight. Ellis should also have little trouble until he reaches the finals. Isaiah Ponce, Lake Central, is a returning state qualifier but comes in as a 4 from his regional. Ponce drew into Merrillvile’s Caleb Carter in the opening round and Carter pinned Ponce in their last match. I am still going with Ponce here in a close one. He was winning before being caught on his back. Tristan Hood, Harrison(WL), brings in a spotless record but hasn’t really run into anyone of note this season, which is why I see Valparaiso’s Aidan Pollitt handing him his first loss of the season. 2019 Champ: Garrett Stuckman-Wawasee Ranked Wrestlers: #4 Javen Estrada-Crown Point #6 Brock Ellis-Chesterton #18 Simeon Norton-South Bend Riley #19 Aidan Pollitt-Valparaiso Best First Round Match(es): Isaiah Ponce, Lake Central vs Cameron Carter, Merrillville Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Keegan Adams, West Lafayette vs Ponce/Carter winner Javen Estrada, Crown Point vs Simeon Norton, South Bend Riley Tristan Hood, Harrison(WL) vs Aidan Pollitt, Valparaiso HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Javen Estrada-Crown Point 2. Brock Ellis-Chesterton 3. Aidan Pollitt-Valparaiso 4. Isaiah Ponce-Lake Central 160 Crown Point won this weight a year ago and Orlando Cruz is looking to give them back to back champs at this weight. Cruz was solid last year and has seemed to up his game this season. The most interesting ticket round matchup at this weight is at the other side of the bracket where Hobart’s Tyler Turley and Chesterton’s Brandon Bolin could meet for the second time this season. Bolin pinned Turley in a thriller earlier this year and if Turley isn’t healthy, he defaulted out of regionals, I see Bolin winning the rematch as well. Penn’s Aaron Steenbeke should make his second trip to the Bank, while Griffith’s Connor Cervantes should make his first trip downtown. 2019 Champ: Noah Hollendonner-Crown Point Ranked Wrestlers: #6 Orlando Cruz-Crown Point #10 Tyler Turley-Hobart #12 Aaron Steenbeke-Penn Best First Round Match(es): Christian Chavez, Mishawaka vs Jamaal Salary, LaPorte Carlos Pérez-Xochipa, Harrison (West Lafayette) vs Tyler Turley, Hobart Brandon Bolin, Chesterton vs Bradley Pittman, Plymouth Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Brandon Bolin, Chesterton vs Tyler Turley, Hobart Connor Cervantes, Griffith vs Salary/Chavez winner HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Orlando Cruz-Crown Point 2. Connor Cervantes-Griffith 3. Aaron Steenbeke-Penn 4. Brandon Bolin-Chesterton 170 Penn’s Pate Easton has looked great this year and comes into semi-state unscathed. This weight will see two guys take their first loss of the season as Hobart’s Jason Simpson and McCutcheon’s Spencer Phillips both come in with perfect records. Simpson has the unfortunate luck of having Eastin waiting for him in the semis so he will have to settle for 3rd most likely. Up top tough Aiden Sneed, Kankakee Valley, or Jesse Herrera look to meet up in the ticket round. Sneed won their first match of season so I’ll go with him to win the rematch as well. Jacob Linky, Warsaw, can’t be overlooked at this weight. Linky is a returning state qualifier. 2019 Champ: Graham Calhoun-Plymouth Ranked Wrestlers: #2 Pate Eastin-Penn #10 Jacob Simpson-Hobart #16 SpencerPhillips-McCutcheon #17 Nick Tattini-Crown Point Best First Round Match(es): Cade Johnson, Chesterton vs Mac Smart, Faith Christian Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Nick Tattini, Crown Point vs Jacob Simpson, Hobart Spencer Phillips, McCutcheon vs Jacob Linky, Warsaw Aiden Sneed, Kankakee Valley vs Jesse Herrera, Highland HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. I don't see anyone being able to really push him this weekend and he should put himself in a good spot for next weekend. Other guys at this weight that will try to prove me wrong include a pair of state qualifiers in Mishawaka’s Cody Timmerman and Valparaiso’s Colin Kwiatowski. Timmerman has clearly jumped levels since last season and should be in the finals here. Kwiatkowski on the other hand has not looked great since returning from injury. I still see him making it out though. I have a 4-over-1 pick at the bottom of the bracket with LaPorte’s Jaden Browder punching his ticket after finishing 4th a week ago. 2019 Champ: Khris Walton-Merrillville Ranked Wrestlers: #4 Gavin Layman-Chesterton #5 Colin Kwiatkowski-Valparaiso #6 Cody Timmerman-Mishawaka Best First Round Match(es): Jacob Stepek, Gavit vs Jaden Browder, LaPorte Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Brandon Estepp, Warsaw vs Stepek/Browder winner Levi Buck, Harrison(WL) vs Colin Kwiatowski, Valparaiso HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Jaden Browder-LaPorte 195 There were a few questions regarding Eli Pack, Culver Academies, coming into this postseason and he answered them last week. Pack his a head above the field here and should remain unbeaten after this weekend. The story of this weight however is that absolutely terrible ticket round match between two top ranked kids. West Lafayette’s Connor Barket comes in ranked 2nd in the state and will meet Penn’s Juan Grange, who is ranked 5th, for a chance to go downtown. One of these wrestlers will be home next weekend instead of on the podium where they belong. Lafayette Jefferson’s Daeveon Cheeks got the best draw he could’ve asked for and should make the trip. We could get an early preview of next weeks state finals with Pack and Barket. 2019 Champ: Jacob LaPlace-Mishawaka Ranked Wrestlers: #1 Eli Pack-Culver Academies #2 Connor Barket-West Lafayette #5 Juan Grange-Penn #6 Gage DeMarco-Cheserton Best First Round Match(es): Ahmad Al-Khalil, South Bend Riley vs Milton Lenoir, Gavit Trevor Hoffman, Hebron vs Daeveon Cheeks, Lafayette Jefferson Kooper Kinser, Delphi vs Will Clark, Crown Point Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Gage DeMarco, Chesterton vs Al-Khalil/Lenoir winner Connor Barket, West Lafayette vs Juan Grange, Penn HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Daeveon Cheeks-Lafayette Jefferson 220 Evan Bates returns to pick up his 3rd semi-state title and he continues his run to another state title. This is a weight where there are guys to push but I don’t know if any of them will. Another wrestler looking to make his third trip downtown is Merrillvile’s Jason Streck. Streck, like Bates, brings in an undefeated record as well. In the semis, Streck will likely wrestle another guy with a spotless record in Lafayette Jefferson’s Jacob Raub. Raub’s record is a little deceiving due to his schedule this year so we will get a real look at where he stacks up if he makes it to Streck. Penn’s Peyton Kendall got a great draw and I look for the sophomore to punch his ticket here. 2019 Champ: Evan Bates-Chesterton Ranked Wrestlers: #1 Evan Bates-Chesterton #3 Jason Streck-Merrillville #13 Jacob Raub-Lafayette Jefferson #16 Hayden Lewter-Gavit #19 Peyton Kendall-Penn Best First Round Match(es): Paul Clark, Crown Point vs Commander Jenkins, South Bend Riley Jalen Thomas, Mishawaka vs Michael Degrado, Lake Central Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Trey White, Portage vs Peyton Kendall, Penn Jason Streck, Merrillville vs Jenkins/Clark winner Jacob Raub, Lafayette Jefferson vs Thomas/Degrado winner HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Evan Bates-Chesterton 2. Jason Streck-Merrillville 3. Peyton Kendall-Penn 4. Jacob Raub-Lafayette Jefferson 285 This weight has a lot of good guys who you could argue should be ranked for various reasons. There are a lot of matches in the first round that could go either way. New Prairie's Hunter Whitenack should cruise to the semifinals, but it’s hard to say who he will wrestle. Mariere Omonode, West Lafayette, comes in with an undefeated record but has only wrestled 9 matches this year. Mishawaka’s Justice Binder comes in with almost as many loses as Omonode had matches, but he has wrestled a lot of good guys this year and has picked up some solid wins. Binder is my pick to make it out here and hand Omonode his first loss of the season. Penn’s Brock Donati, like Binder, has wrestled a solid schedule compared to a lot of the guys he could to make it out and I give him the nod here as well. He does have a tough Cory Hill, Portage, right off the bat and Hill can definitely go with him. Sergio Bueno, South Bend Riley, is in a good spot to pull off a 4-over-1 here as he has the sophomore Hayden Lewter from Gavit. 2019 Champ: Damari Dancy-Portage Ranked Wrestlers: #7 Hunter Whitenack-New Prairie #9 Mariere Omonode-West Lafayette #12 Sergio Bueno-South Bend Riley Best First Round Match(es): Cory Hill, Portage vs Brock Donati, Penn Cody Winkler, Knox vs Kayden Sowders, Lafayette Jefferson Edgar Decker, Gavit vs Sergio Bueno, South Bend Riley Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Justice Bender, Mishawaka vs Mariere Omonode, West Lafayette Donati/Hill winner vs Winkler/Sowders winner Jonathan Mollencupp, Wheeler vs Decker/Bueno winner HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. 1/4 Ashton Jackson LaPorte Description: This award is awarded to the wrestler that we feel improved the most from last season. Breakdown: Ashton Jackson ran away with this award, along with his state title. Jackson was not necessary bad last year, that wouldn't be fair to say, but he was nowhere near what he was this season. Last year Jackson didn't win his conference and only on the sectional in the postseason. He was also beaten by a backup from Perry Meridisan in the early rounds of the Al Smith before dropping a match on the backside and not placing there as well. This year he was on a tear. He had 1 loss at 106, and won every tournament he entered this season. From conferecne on, Jackson gave up 14 points in 5 matches to end the season, while giving up 1 takedown. - Mater Dei vs Perry Meridian
106 #1 Alex Cottey vs #5 Alec Freeman This is a big match up between two kids that expect to finish high on the podium at the end of the year. Alec Freeman steps into the line up with Cole Ross up at 113, and has hit the ground running, but he hasn’t wrestled a wrestler the caliber of Alex Cottey this year. The returning state runner-up at the weight will look for bonus as he has had only one match go the distance this year. HOOSIERMAT PREDCTION: Alex Cottey MD Alec Freeman 113 Andrew Haggerty vs #4 Cole Ross Cole Ross is still unbeaten on the year and looking to build from last season where he made it to Banker’s Life. He comes in as a heavy favorite and will look to score big points for the Wildcats. Andrew Haggerty was thrown into the lineup, not being the original stater at the weight, but he has come into his own with his two losses both coming to Warren Central’s David Pierson. Look for him to slow down Ross and make it a match. HOOSIERMAT PREDCTION: Cole Ross Dec Andrew Haggerty 120 James Sturgis vs #2 Blake Boarman Blake Boarman is almost in a league of his own on the mat and will look to pick up 6 for the Wildcats. Perry Meridian’s James Sturgis will look to manage the match, but I think Boarman will have too much for him and will end the match before the 6min mark. HOOSIERMAT PREDCTION: Boarman TF James Sturgis 126 Anthony Cotter vs #8 Kane Egli Kane Egli is two years removed from a state finals appearance, but he looks to be back this year as he’s been rolling through guys so far this season. He will wrestle technically sound wrestler in Perry’s Anthony Cotter. Cotter has looked good this season, but the question is can he go the distance as he has gassed pretty bad in a few matches this year. HOOSIERMAT PREDCTION: Kane Egli MD Anthony Cotter 132 #9(at 138) Gabe Smith vs #9 Clay Egli After a 4-1 decision in the ticket round to last year’s state champ, Asa Garcia, Clay Egli is looking to finally make an appearance. Across from him is a wrestler trying to do the same thing after missing weight at regionals last year. This will a big match in deciding the winner of the dual. On paper Clay Egli is the favorite but Gabe Smith is funky and has a tendency to put guys on their back. The biggest question here though is if he can manage the match because he does give up points in bunches on occasion. HOOSIERMAT PREDCTION: Clay Egli MD Gabe Smith 138 Ridge Cavallaro vs Blaine Mayer Blaine Mayer has been biding his time and is finally in the lineup for the Wildcats. They will be looking for bonus from him against Ridge Cavallaro to widen the gap agianst the Falcons. HOOSIERMAT PREDCTION: Blaine Mayer WBF Ridge Cavallaro 145 #1 Aiden Warren vs #2 Matt Lee This is the marquee matchup of the dual as we have the top two kids at the weight squaring off. Matt Lee is a two time placer and has looked like he jumped levels over the summer. The same can be said about Perry Meridians Aiden Warren who has been on fire this year beating returning state runner up Cayden Rooks and returning 5th placer Antwuan Graves already this season. HOOSIERMAT PREDCTION: Aiden Warren Dec Matt Lee 152 #6 Sam Fair vs #4 Eli Dickens This matchup pits two wrestlers who would rather be on top than neutral. Returning state runner-up Sam Fair is looking to bounce back after taking loses the past two weekends. He will wrestle a retuning state qualifier in Eli Dickens who has shown he can go with anybody and has the wins to prove it. HOOSIERMAT PREDCTION: Sam Fair Dec Eli Dickens 160 #12 Noah Baker vs #13 Gabe Sollars This is a big toss up match for this dual as each team has a solid yet unproven commodity in each wrestler. The Falcons Noah Baker has looked good this far in the season and will be up against a freshman hammer in Gabe Sollars. HOOSIERMAT PREDCTION: Noah Baker Dec Gabe Sollars 170 #10 Brooks Davis vs #8 Macartney Parkinson Returning state placer Brooks Davis looks to get use to his new weight class as he takes on Mater Dei’s Macartney Parkinson who is also up from 152. Both guys are looking to add another marquee win to their already long resumes. HOOSIERMAT PREDCTION: Brooks Davis Dec Macartney Parkinson 182 Jared Clayton vs Dakx Lannert This starts the slate of matches that I think will determine the dual. The first one being at 182 where two smaller 182 pounders will look to win this very big swing match. Mater Dei’s Dakx Lannert has a motor and will look to push the pace, but the Falcon’s Jared Clayton has finds a way to put guys on their back let’s see if he can do it again. HOOSIERMAT PREDCTION: Dakx Lannert Dec Clayton 195 #13 Austin Lane vs John McGrew Austin Lane is the heavy favorite in this match and will need to pick up 6 in order for the Falcons to have a shot in this dual. Mater Dei’s John McGrew will be coached as he tries to prevent a quality decision. HOOSIERMAT PREDCTION: Austin Lane WBF John McGrew 220 Alex Holliday vs Joseph Crowe This match up is against two role players for each team. This is a toss up match against two kids still trying to get their feet wet at the varsity level. Perry Meridian’s Alex Holliday brings in a slightly better record and on paper should take this match. HOOSIERMAT PREDCTION: Alex Holliday Dec Will Crowe 285 #11 Sam Jones vs Matthew Woodruff Perry needs a fall at this weight plain and simple, which is good for them because Sam Jones is a pinner. He has a tendency to give up big points trying to get guys to their backs so look for Mater Dei’s Matthew Woodruff to capitalize if a mistake is made. HOOSIERMAT PREDCTION: Sam Jones WBF Matthew Woodruff Mater Dei vs Perry Meridian BACK
- GONZALEZ NAIA W.O.W.
ARTICLES GONZALEZ NAIA W.O.W. KANSAS CITY - Colton Gonzalez of the Marian wrestling team has been named the NAIA National Wrestler of the Week as announced by the NAIA Wednesday afternoon. Gonzalez continued his strong season at the 184 class at the Missouri Valley Invitational. He zipped through his first two matches of the weekend, winning both by fall. In round one, he earned the pin over Benedictine's Eli White in just 1:38, and then he topped himself with a pin in 1:15 in the second round over John Bentley of Lyon. Gonzalez went the distance in the third round against Santino Gee of Ottawa and earned an 8-2 win by decision. His win sent him to the quarterfinals where he defeated No. 13 Eric Vermillion of Indiana Tech by a 4-3 decision. In the semifinals, Gonzalez upset fourth-ranked Tyler Hall of Embry-Riddle, winning 8-7 in overtime. The win set him up with Anthony Orozco of Menlo, the top-ranked wrestler at the 184 class in the nation. Gonzalez battled, but fell by a 5-4 decision to claim second place overall. He and the Knights host the Marian Duals Saturday at 9 a.m. on John Grimes Court.
- GATES NAMED SAC W.O.W.
ARTICLES GATES NAMED SAC W.O.W. OKLAHOMA CITY – Indiana Tech freshman Nick Gates was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Men's Wrestler of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Gates went 4-1 and took second place in the 157-lbs. bracket of the Greyhound Open on Sunday at the University of Indianapolis. Currently ranked 19th in his weight class, the Smiths Creek, Michigan native earned a pair of one-point wins, one major decision and a pin in the tournament while his lone loss came in the finals to Quinn Kenner of Ohio State University. It is the first time in his career that he has won the weekly award from the conference.
