Silas Allred Doug McSchooler/INDYSTAR Silas Allred Doug McSchooler/INDYSTAR Silas Allred Doug McSchooler/INDYSTAR Silas Allred Doug McSchooler/INDYSTAR 1/3 Silas Allred Shenandoah Description: This award goes to the wrestler who had the best season. Breakdown: This award was much easier to give year. For the second year in a row Jesse Mendez of Crown Point finished in second place with an amazing sophomore campaign. Evansville Ma ter Dei’s Eli Dickens capped off his senior year with a state title, while beating the returning champ 3 times this year. Both wrestlers could’ve won this award in another year, but its hard not to give it to Shenandoah’s Silas Allred. When you go a full season and no one can make it 6 minutes with you, that is as impressive as it gets. Allred won his second state title with a pin over a previous undefeated wrestler in the finals to cap off his dominating season, earning him the Hoosiermat Wrestler of The Year. College: University of Nebraska-Lincoln National Rankings: Flowrestling | 4th Intermat | 4th The Open Mat | 3rd Season Accolades: Mid-Eastern Conference | 1st Sectionals | 1st Regionals | 1st Semi-state | 1st 2019 IHSAA State | 1st Runner-up: Jesse Mendez, Crown Point 3rd place: Eli Dickens, Evansville Mater Dei Wrestler of the Year 2020 BACK

106 This weight is one man versus the field here as Perry Meridian’s Alex Cottey comes in as a heavy favorite. The returning state runner-up and defending county champ hasn’t been challenged this year, as all of his matches this season have ended in falls for the Falcon. On the other side of the bracket, we will see Warren Central Sophomore, Carlton Perry and Freshman Kody Glithero of Roncalli battle it out to see who gets a shot at Cottey in the finals. Ranked Wrestlers: #1 Alex Cottey-Perry Meridian #6 Carlton Perry-Warren Central #12 Kody Glithero-Roncalli HOOSIERMAT PICK Haskett-Alex Cottey HOOSIERMAT PICK Gobeyn-Alex Cottey 113 On paper, this should be David Pierson’s weight to win, as he tries to build from his 3rd place finish a year ago. But don’t count out Lawrence Central’s Antonio Jefferson who beat Pierson only a few months ago. Other wrestlers in the field include Lawrence North’s Anthony Hughes, who has given Jefferson some issues in the past, as well as Perry Meridian’s Andrew Haggarty, who comes in with two losses -- one being a 3-1 loss to Pierson. Ranked Wrestlers: #5 David Pierson-Warren Central #12 Antonio Jefferson-Lawrence Central HOOSIERMAT PICK Haskett-Antonio Jefferson HOOSIERMAT PICK Gobeyn-Antonio Jefferson 120 Another heavy favorite in this weight class is Roncalli’s Brayden Lowery, as he tries to pick up his 3rd county title in three years. His potential finals opponent should be Warren Central’s Chris Stewart, who is having a great year with a win over returning state qualifier, Tyler Conley of Avon. Stewart’s length could potentially give Lowery some trouble. Logan Gailbrath, who owns a win over #5 at 113, David Pierson, is also in the field. Ranked Wrestlers: #3 Brayden Lowery-Roncalli #13 Chris Stewart-Warren Central HOOSIERMAT PICK Haskett-Brayden Lowery HOOSIERMAT PICK Gobeyn-Brayden Lowery 126 This weight is a little down this year with the only ranked wrestler being Warren’s Central Jeivan Ross, who was a runner-up a year ago. Sam Slivka of Roncalli, a returning semi-state qualifier, will look to prevent Ross from finishing a step higher on the podium. Another wrestler in the field to watch is Perry Meridian’s Anthony Cotter. Ranked Wrestlers: #13 Jeivan Ross-Warren Central HOOSIERMAT PICK Haskett-Jeivan Ross HOOSIERMAT PICK Gobeyn-Jeivan Ross 132 This weight features Roncalli state champ Alec Viduya, as he looks to capture his first county title after finishing 2nd and 3rd in the years prior. Andre Beatty of Warren Central is having a good year as he looks to win his first county title. North Central’s Sebastien Bryant is another tough wrestler in this weight class. Ranked Wrestlers: #2 Alec Viduya-Roncalli HOOSIERMAT PICK Haskett-Alec Viduya HOOSIERMAT PICK Gobeyn-Alec Viduya 138 Jarred Rowlett of Warren Central is looking for his second consecutive title after winning the 132 title last year. It won’t be an easy feat as his finals opponent could be either state placer Tyce Freije of Roncalli or Perry Meridian’s Gabe Smith, who are both more than capable of beating the Warrior. Ranked Wrestlers: #6 Jarred Rowlett-Warren Central #8 Tyce Freije-Roncalli #13 (at 132) Gabe Smith-Perry Meridian HOOSIERMAT PICK Haskett-Gabe Smith HOOSIERMAT PICK Gobeyn-Tyce Freije 145 This is the toughest weight in the tournament with several guys with a lot of state experience. Warren Central senior Antwaun Graves looks to get his 2nd county championship, but in his way is Perry Meridian state qualifier Aiden Warren coming off a weekend where he beat #1 at 138, Cayden Rooks. Also in this weight is returning Lawrence Central semi-state qualifier, Terrell Leavell. Furthermore, this could be our first real look at the sophomore hammer from Ben Davis, Diesel Duncan, as he tries to navigate this weight class. Ranked Wrestlers: #1 Antwaun Graves-Warren Central #5 Aiden Warren-Perry Meridian #14 Diesel Duncan-Ben Davis HOOSIERMAT PICK Haskett-Aiden Warren HOOSIERMAT PICK Gobeyn-Aiden Warren 152 Returning state runner up and two-time county champion, Sammy Fair, is the favorite at this weight and has shown he can go with the top guys after winning a county title at 120 a year ago. In his path to a 3rd county title is Brice Coleman of Warren Central who can go with anyone in the state on any given day. Ranked Wrestlers: #4 Sam Fair-Perry Meridian #11 Brice Coleman-Warren Central HOOSIERMAT PICK Haskett-Sam Fair HOOSIERMAT PICK Gobeyn-Sam Fair 160 Aaron Taylor of Warren Central is making the most of his senior year having notched some big wins already this year. He looks to pick up his first county title after finishing as a runner-up last year at 170. His potential finals opponent should be Perry Meridian’s Noah Baker, who has yet to lose to an Indiana wrestler this year. North Central’s Bradley Harrington is another tough guy in this weight class. Ranked Wrestlers: #11 Aaron Taylor-Warren Central #14 Noah Baker-Perry Meridian HOOSIERMAT PICK Haskett-Noah Baker HOOSIERMAT PICK Gobeyn-Aaron Taylor 170 This match features two returning state players and county champions. On the top side you have returning county champ at 182, Roncalli's Elijah Mahan. On the other side, there’s Perry Meridian’s Brooks Davis, who won the title last year at 160. Ranked Wrestlers: #4 Elijah Mahan-Roncalli #9 Brooks Davis-Perry Meridian HOOSIERMAT PICK Haskett-Brooks Davis HOOSIERMAT PICK Haskett-Elijah Mahan 182 This weight is wide open with an undefeated wrestler on each side of the bracket. Lutheran’s Hayden Filipovich is the top seed at this weight and will look to get on the podium after missing it last year. On the other side of the bracket are a pair of tough seniors. Devontay Moore from North Central and Jared Clayton from Perry Meridian have notched big wins throughout their careers and will look to put it together and capture a county title. Ranked Wrestlers: No Ranked Wrestlers HOOSIERMAT PICK Haskett-Jared Clayton HOOSIERMAT PICK Gobeyn-Devontay Moore 195 This is another weight where there is no standout favorite. Dakari Kenny of Pike has the best resume’ in the field but will have his hands full in the semis against Logan Beard, Lutheran, and David Garcia, North Central, winner. Eliseo Caldera of Lawrence Central is another wrestler who is looking to put together a run and get a county title. Ranked Wrestlers: No Ranked Wrestlers HOOSIERMAT PICK Haskett-Dakari Kenny HOOSIERMAT PICK Gobeyn-Dakari Kenny 220 Perry Meridian’s Austin Lane is the standout in this weight class after finishing second last year at 195. The two wrestlers who could prevent him from getting a title are Warren Central’s Carlos Mitchell and Roncalli’s Spencer Fears. Ranked Wrestlers: #13 (at 195) Austin Lane-Perry Meridian HOOSIERMAT PICK Haskett-Austin Lane HOOSIERMAT PICK Gobeyn-Austin Lane 285 This is a loaded weight with six ranked guys in it. Nearly every matchup after the first round will have ranked guys wrestling each other. Returning state qualifier Jamichael Watts makes his return to the mat this weekend and is a slight favorite to take the title. There are several wrestlers though that can prevent him from being on top of the podium. Waiting for him for in the semis will be Lawrence Central’s Darrione Gregory, who has beaten a lot of good guys the past two years. The biggest matchup for the team race will take place between Perry Meridian’s Sam Jones and Roncalli’s John Harris, with the loser being out of the tournament scoring no points. Other wrestlers who can walk away with a title include Franklin Central’s Antone Alexander, Warren Central’s Dennis Hubbard, and Ben Davis’s Muhammad Sidibe. • IU vs Purdue

This dual is normally a pretty big deal in Indiana, but it should be even bigger this year for a couple of reasons. The first reason being that IU has taken a big step up this year under first year head coach Angel Escobedo. For the past few years Purdue has been head and shoulders above them but that might not be the case this year. They have a couple big dual victories, including one against top 20 North Carolina and a 36-3 victory over Maryland. Coach Escobedo has also had a strong year of recruiting, achieving his goal of getting an unprecedented amount of the states top seniors to commit to IU. Another reason I think this dual will be bigger is because Purdue has also improved a lot as well. They are the 17th ranked dual team in the country, and have a lineup with many potential all-americans. They had a great showing at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas invitational, leaving with 4 placers, and are coming off of a dominant 28-10 victory over Maryland in their home opener. Overall, regardless of who wins, I think this will be a great event for the state of Indiana and hopefully mark the beginning of a new and improved rivalry between both of our Indiana teams. 125 #18 Devin Shroder (Purdue) vs. Elijah Oliver (IU) Breakdown: This will be a great match to start off the dual meet. Devin Shroder has had a great season so far, including placing at the Las Vegas invite and a big win over returning national qualifier Gabe Townsell of Stanford. Even though this is his first year in the lineup, he has proven already that he is capable of beating some of the best guys in the country. Elijah Oliver is a returning national qualifier and got 8th at big tens last year. He hasn’t had the start to his season that Shroder but I still expect this to be a solid match. Prediction: Shroder over Oliver by decision, 3-0 Purdue 133 Ben Thornton (Purdue) vs. Paul Konrath (IU) Breakdown: This is another solid match-up to start off the dual meet. Ben Thornton has had a solid season so far, having spent some time in the rankings. All of his losses so far have been to really quality guys and he looks poised to have a big senior season. Standing across from him will most likely be freshman Paul Konrath. Konrath has had a decent amount of losses this season, but he also has a huge win over returning all-american, and 6th ranked, Tariq Wilson at the South Beach duals. I think Thornton is the more consistent wrestler here, and expect him to win a controlled decision. Prediction: Thornton over Konrath by decision, 6-0 Purdue 141 Nate Limmex (Purdue) vs. Kyle Luigs (IU) Breakdown: In a dual filled with a ton of closely contested matchups that could go either way, I feel like this is one that could be a little bit of a mismatch. Kyle Luigs had an excellent high school career, as he was a three time state placer for Evansville Mater Dei, and has had some solid college success so far. However, I think that Nate Limmex has a distinct advantage here due to how much high level college experience he has, including two wins over Indiana wrestling legend Chad Red. I think bonus points are in play here for Limmex, and if he gets them that could be huge for the outcome of the dual meet. Prediction: Limmex over Luigs by major decision, 10-0 Purdue 149 Parker Filius (Purdue) vs. Fernie Silva (IU) Breakdown: This is where I think IU gets on the board first in the dual meet. Fernie Silva is coming off of a big win over Alfred Banister on Sunday, and seems to have a lot of momentum going into this dual meet. He was in division 2 last year, and is making his presence felt in the big ten this year. Filius is having a solid season himself, and had an extremely decorated high school career, winning four state titles. However, I am siding with Silva on this one due to the fact that he beat Bannister two days after Bannister beat Filius, but this match will definitely be a battle. Prediction: Silva over Filius by decision, 10-3 Purdue 157 #6 Griffin Parriott (Purdue) vs. Jake Danishek (IU) Breakdown: Griffin Parriott is having a great season so far. He’s had a couple of losses, but he has made up for that with some absolutely incredible results including an overtime victory over #2 Tyler Berger on his way to getting second at the Cliff Keen Invitational. Danishek is having a solid season as well. Last weekend he lost by one point to 8th ranked Keshawn Hayes and won by fall against Maryland. I expect this match to be closer than the rankings would indicate, but I still expect Parriott to win a controlled decision. Prediction: Parriott over Danishek by decision, 13-3 Purdue 165 Cole Wysocki (Purdue) vs. Bryce Martin (IU) Breakdown: I think that this will be another closely contested match. Martin is one of the seniors for the Hoosiers, and he has had a great season so far including a 3-0 victory over Ohio State’s Kaleb Romero last week. He was a national qualifier last year, and has definitely taken it up another notch this season. Wysocki has had a good season for the Boilermakers as well, finishing 3rd at the very tough Princeton open and has some good dual meet wins. I expect this to be a very closely contested match, with Martin winning in the end. Prediction: Martin over Wysocki by decision, 13-6 Purdue 174 #15 Dylan Lydy (Purdue) vs. Jacob Covaciu (IU) Breakdown: For Indiana wrestling fans, this might be the most interesting match of the night, as both of these guys had great high school careers. Lydy won a state championship in 2015 while attending Ben Davis and Covaciu was a two time state champion in 2015 and 2016 while attending Merrillville. Both of them were fargo all americans and are two of the best wrestlers we have had in the past few years. Both of them have had good college success since then as well. Lydy had a breakout season last year, falling just one win short of becoming an all american. He had numerous high profile win, including a win over 3rd placer Myles Amine of Michigan. He hasn’t had quite the start he was looking for but at Friday’s dual he looked like he is right back on track and poised to make a run for the podium in March. On the other hand this is Covaciu’s first year in the lineup, as he is a recent transfer from Wisconsin. Despite it being his first year in the lineup, he has a lot of solid college victories and achievements, including winning the 2017 junior US open. Look for this to be a really physical match between two explosive guys with great underhooks. Prediction: Lydy over Covaciu by decision, 16-6 Purdue 184 Max Lyon (Purdue) vs. Norman Conley (IU) Breakdown: This will be a huge match in the dual between two pretty evenly matched guy. Conley has had a lot of good wins this season, including a victory over returning all-american Chip Ness. He is one of the many guys on this IU team who have improved a lot during Coach Escobedo’s first year as head coach. Lyon has had a solid season for the Boilermakers as well, opening up the Big Ten dual season with a nice win on Friday. He doesn’t have the big win that Conley has, but he doesn’t have any bad losses. At the dual meet last year this was a 5-4 win for Conley and I expect the match to be pretty similar this year with Conley winning a low scoring decision. Prediction: Conley over Lyon by decision, 16-9 Purdue 197 #10 Christian Brunner (Purdue) vs Jake Kleimola Breakdown: Like 141, I feel like this is one of the only matches that could result in bonus points. Christian Brunner has had a great year so far, starting in November when he wrestled in the U23 world championships, going 1-1. He also placed at the very tough Cliff Keen Las Vegas invitational and had two ranked wins at the South Beach duals. Kleimola has a solid record so far this season, but he doesn’t have the big wins and credentials that Brunner does. I think that this match will be close at the beginning and then Brunner will break it open with his top work. Prediction: Brunner over Kleimola by major decision, 20-9 Purdue 285 Jacob Aven (Purdue) vs Fletcher Miller (IU) Breakdown: This will be another great matchup between two guys who went to high school in Indiana. Aven has had a really good season for Purdue. Although his record is about 50%, the majority of his losses are against ranked opponents and he has some big victories, including one over junior world silver medalist Zach Elam. He has a lot of momentum right now, and I think we will see him ride that momentum here. We haven’t seen much of Fletcher Miller this season, but we know that he is extremely solid. Both of these guys lost by decision to Hemida last weekend, although Aven’s was a little closer. I expect this to be a tight match between two guys who are very familiar with each other. Prediction: Aven over Miller by decision, 23-9 Purdue IU vs Purdue BACK

He is not, however, anything close to a runaway favorite to win this weight class. I could see about 10 guys walking away with a title when it is all said and done, depending on who gets hot at the right time. Crown Point’s Anthony Bahl will be big for this weight class and, assuming weight is not an issue, should right around the top of the heap in February. Bahl comes in ranked 2nd with a win over #3 Hayden Brady in the offseason. Brady fell victim to a headlock on Friday night in a match he was controlling the whole time. Brady, like Bahl, will be a taller, longer 106 pounder and will give guys fits at the weight. Other guys who have been to state at this weight are River Forrest’s Jeffrey Bailey, East Noble’s Keegan Malott, and Lake Central’s Johnny Cortez. Some freshman to watch out for in this weight are 5th ranked Preston Haines, Brownsburg, and 11th ranked Kyrel Leavell, Warren Central. Haines has proven himself to be a legit threat at this weight already through offseason tournaments. Leavell is on the other end of it, since he plays football, he has not been able to wrestle much and to raise his ranking. Other guys to watch at this weight are Southport’s Nathan Smith who has a win over last years 8thplacer, and Perry Meridian’s Toby Billerman who has a resume of good wins in the last year.
