106 This weight is full of studs and there are some great matches here. At the top of the bracket, Wawasee freshman Logan Stuckman comes in ranked in the top 10 and is an on-paper favorite to advance. Stuckman will have a tough ticket round match, facing the winner of David Maldonado, Merrillville, and Johnny Cortez, Lake Central. I see Cortez taking that match before falling to Stuckman in the ticket round. In the next quarter bracket, you get a first-round match between two good freshmen in LaPorte’s Ashton Jackson and Hobart’s Trevor Triana. I like for Jackson to win that, setting up a rematch between McCutcheon’s Jake Stall. While the match was close the first time, 4-3, Stall had the only takedown, and its hard to win if you can score from neutral. I look for stall to win again. The bottom side of the bracket give us, in my opinion, the best ticket round match. Jeffrey Bailey, River Forest, should meet Attica’s Avery Miller in the ticket round. Bailey had a slip up early in the year but has been dominant since. Bailey takes this match up and gets to the bank. At the bottom of the bracket, Sam Goin is the heavy favorite to win the weight, and he should cruise into his semifinals match with Bailey. In the semis I expect Goin and Stuckman to win easily setting up a match in with each other in the final. Goin takes this weight and Bailey settles for 3rd. 2019 Champ: Brennen Cernus-Culver Academies Ranked Wrestlers: #2 Sam Goin-Crown Point #6 Logan Stuckman-Wawasee #12 Jeffrey Bailey-River Forest #18 Avery Miller-Attica Best First Round Match(es): David Maldonado-Merrillville vs Johnny Cortez-Lake Central Ashton Jackson-LaPorte vs Trevor Triana-Hobart Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #6 Logan Stuckman-Wawasee vs Maldonado/Cortez winner Jake Stall-McCutcheon vs Jackson/Triana winner #12 Jeffrey Bailey-River Forest vs #18 Avery Miller-Attica HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Sam Goin-Crown Point 2. Logan Stuckman-Wawasee 3. Jeffrey Bailey-River Forrest 4. Jake Stall-McCutcheon 113 Crown Point freshman Logan Frazier is the favorite to take home the title this weekend. Frazier has been perfect since his Al Smith semi final loss. At the top of the bracket, look for Chesterton’s Doug Waters to pick up two big wins this weekend and make his way downtown. In the next quarter bracket, you get a ticket round match between Lake Central’s Nam Doan and Hobart’s Trevor Schammert. Doan is big for the weight and could give Schammert some issues. At the bottom of the bracket, Valparaiso freshman Stefan Vitello, and Penn Ryan Purvis meet in the first round. I do not expect to see a 4 over 1 here, but Vitello is good enough to pull of the upset. In the semis, we get a third match between Frazier and Purvis. Frazier has won both and I expect him to win here too. Up top, Schammert comes out on too against Waters setting up a match with Frazier in the finals. Frazier takes the crown here and Purvis finishes 3rd. 2019 Champ: Jacob Moran-Portage Ranked Wrestlers: #6 Logan Frazier-Crown Point #7 Trevor Schammert-Hobart #11 Ryan Purvis-Penn Best First Round Match(es): #11 Ryan Purvis-Penn vs Stefan Vitello-Valparaiso Doug Waters-Chesterton vs Drake Montelongo-Tippecanoe Valley Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Alex Kellogg-Harrison (WL) vs Waters/Montelongo winner #7 Trevor Schammert-Hobart vs Nam Doan-Lake Central HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Logan Frazier-Crown Point 2. Trevor Schammert-Hobart 3. Ryan Purvis-Penn 4. Doug Waters-Chesterton 120 This weight doesn’t have much in the first round to really get excited about, but there is some great ticket round matches. The first one being between two seniors who have been to the bank. Retuning 5th place finisher, Riley Bettich of Crown Point comes in trying to defend his title. Bettich will wrestle a tough state qualifier in Portage’s Ty Haskins in the ticket round. Bettich may be a bit too much for Haskins and rolls into the semis. In the next quarter bracket freshman Cole Solomey, Kankakee Valley, looks to make his first trip to state. Solomey has a tough Brodie Fogarty, Mishawaka, but I look for him to beat him and advance. Wheeler senior, Giovanni Diaz will breeze through to the semis. In the bottom of the bracket we have a ticket round match with two ranked wrestlers. Merrillville’s Malik Hall and Sam Hein, Harrison (WL), meet in the ticket round. Hall is a returning state placer and has no bad loses. Hall does tend to keep matches closer than they must be so that could hurt him, but I see Hall advancing for the second year. In the semifinals, Bettich and Diaz take care f business setting up their third match. Diaz has won the first 2 so it is hard not to pick him here but Bettich is as good as anyone and can definitely take this one. Solomey beats Hall to finish 3rd. 2019 Champ: Riley Bettich-Crown Point Ranked Wrestlers: #2 Riley Bettich-Crown Point #3 Giovanni Diaz-Wheeler #6 Malik Hall-Merrillville #8 Ty Haskins-Portage #11 Cole Solomey-Kankakee Valley #12 Sam Hein-Harrison (WL) Best First Round Match(es): Ruben Padilla-Hobart vs Dylan Tom-Wawasee Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #12 Sam Hein-Harrison (WL) vs #6 Malik Hall-Merrillville HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Giovanni Diaz-Wheeler 2. Riley Bettich-Crown Point 3. Cole Solomey-Kankakee Valley 4. Malik Hall-Merrillville 126 For the second year in a row a Crown Point wrestler is the heavy favorite at this weight. Stephen Roberson comes in as a returning state placer and will face a tough wrestler in whoever wins between Plymouth’s Dominic Smith and Hobarts Nathan Schammert, but he shouldn’t have much trouble advancing again. In the next quarter bracket down, returning state qualifier Brendon Mark, Mishawaka, got a favorable draw and should make it back to the bank in his senior campaign. Jace Alexander, Wawasee, is a returning state placer and will cruise his way back to the bank. On paper the match between Aleksandar Pejovski, Merrillville, and Aidan Torres, Chesterton, should be a good one, but I think that Torres is just too much for anyone here not named Roberson. Torres gets through Pejovski and beats Alexander again to set up his 5th match with Roberson. Roberson beats Torres again in the finals, while Mark falls to Alexander. 2019 Champ: Jesse Mendez-Crown Point Ranked Wrestlers: #5 Stephen Roberson-Crown Point #8 Aidan Torres-Chesterton #10 Jace Alexander-Wawasee #18 Brendon Mark-Mishawaka Best First Round Match(es): Dominic Smith-Plymouth vs Nathan Schammert-Hobart Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #5 Stephen Roberson-Crown Point vs Smith/Schammert winner #8 Aidan Torres-Chesterton vs Aleksandar Pejovski-Merrillville HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Stephen Roberson-Crown Point 2. Aidan Torres-Chesterton 3. Jace Alexander-Wawasee 4. Brendon Mark-Mishawaka 132 Jesse Mendez is winning this weight with very little resistance. In the rest of the bracket, Penn’s Vince Sparrow should make his second trip down to the bank. The top and bottom quarter brackets are interesting though. Up top, Lake Central’s Isaiah Ponce comes in with 10 loses on the year, but against quality competition. West Central’s Braden Nuest has a much better record but has not seen the guys Ponce has, which I think will be the difference here. At the bottom of the bracket, we have a good first round match between Nova Tuttle, Harrison (WL), and Todd Hardy, South Bend Washington, with the winner facing Portage’s Brandley Conrad in the ticket round. Conrad has beaten a lot of good guys this year, and I don’t see either of these two cutting his season short. In the semis Mendez and Sparrow make the finals, and Conrad gets 3rd beating Ponce for the 3rd time this year. 2019 Champ: Geremia Brooks-Wawasee Ranked Wrestlers: #1 Jesse Mendez-Crown Point #17 Vince Sparrow-Penn #20 Bradley Conrad-Portage Best First Round Match(es): Nova Tuttle-Harrison (WL) vs Todd Hardy-South Bend Washington Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Braden Nuest-West Central vs Isaiah Ponce-Lake Central #17 Vince Sparrow-Penn vs Juan Simpson-Gavit #20 Bradley Conrad-Portage vs Hardy/Tuttle winner HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Jesse Mendez-Crown Point 2. Vince Sparrow-Penn 3. Bradley Conrad-Portage 4. Isaiah Ponce-Lake Central 138 This weight a lot of comparable talent. Starting with the bottom of the bracket, Eli Hickman of Rensselaer Central and Tyson Nisley of LaPorte have great draws and should have no issues making it downtown. The same can not be said anyone up top. Crown Point’s Nick Tattini has a tough Isaac Switzer, Lafayette Central Catholic, right away. If Tattini wins here, he sets up a rematch with South Bend Riley’s Droshawn Lewis. Lewis won the first match between the two. Below them in the bracket, we have a ranked ticket round match-up between Merrillville’s Anthony Rivera and Chesterton’s Ethan Kaiser. Kaiser majored Rivera earlier in the year. Lewis, Kaiser, Hickman, and Nisley are my four semifinalists at this weight. From there, Lewis beats Kaiser and Hickman beats Nisley. Hickman wins the weight, while Nisley settles for 3rd here. 2019 Champ: Braxton Alexander-Wawasee Ranked Wrestlers: #8 Eli Hickman-Rensselaer Central #9 Tyson Nisley-LaPorte #15 Droshawn Lewis-South Bend Riley #18 Ethan Kaiser-Chesterton #19 Nick Tattini-Crown Point #20 Anthony Rivera-Merrillville Best First Round Match(es): #19 Nick Tattini-Crown Point vs Isaac Switzer-Lafayette Central Catholic #8 Eli Hickman-Rensselaer Central vs Jak Krouse-Valparaiso Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #15 Droshawn Lewis-South Bend Riley vs Tattini/Switzer winner #20 Anthony Rivera-Merrillville vs #18 Ethan Kaiser-Chesterton HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Eli Hickman-Rensselaer Central 2. Droshawn Lewis-South Bend Riley 3. Tyson Nisley-LaPorte 4. Ethan Kaiser-Chesterton 145 This weight will see 2 wrestlers suffer their first loss of the season. Harrison (WL)’s AJ Poindexter, Chesterton’s Brock Ellis, and Jacob Maldonado all come in with undefeated records. Maldonado has been hurt this year, so he sat until tournament time. Ellis is probably the second-best kid in the state at this weight, and with Maldonado sitting most of the year I don’t see anyone here beating him. At the bottom of the bracket we have Crown Point’s Orlando Cruz who is having a good year losing only to Ellis. Cruz will have a tough junior in Simeon Norton, South Bend Riley, in the ticket round but I look for him to beat Norton here. Poindexter should have no issues getting to his semifinal match with Cruz. Cruz and Ellis win their matches and meet for the 5th time. In the finals Ellis wins again, and Maldonado finishes 3rd. 2019 Champ: Jordan Douglass-Attica Ranked Wrestlers: #2 Brock Ellis-Chesterton #4 AJ Poindexter-Harrison (WL) #8 Orlando Cruz-Crown Point #9 Jacob Maldonado-Merrillville Best First Round Match(es): NONE Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #8 Orlando Cruz-Crown Point vs Simeon Norton-South Bend Riley HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Brock Ellis-Chesterton 2. Orlando Cruz-Crown Point 3. Jacob Maldonado-Merrillville 4. AJ Poindexter-Harrison (WL) 152 Returning 152 champ Ellis is down at 145, and returning 145 champ Jorden Douglass, Attica is now up at 152. Douglass was undefeated at this point in the year last but has suffered a few hiccups this season. Regardless, I see him picking up his second semi-state title this weekend. Lowell’s Shawn Hollis comes with a great draw and should not only make it to state, but he should make the finals at this weight. On his side of the bracket though, is an undefeated Garrett Stuckman, Wawasee. While he has not lost this year, Stuckman has not wrestled much, and in the 12 matches he has had this season, none were against a ranked opponent. Tyler Turley, Hobart, will likely have Chesterton’s Cade Johnson in the ticket round, a wrestler he majored earlier in the year. From the semis, Douglass makes it back to the finals with a win over Turley, while Stuckman suffers his first loss of the season to Hollis. In the finals Douglass repeats with a win over Hollis. Stuckman takes his second straight loss and finishes 4th to Turley. 2019 Champ: Brock Ellis-Chesterton Ranked Wrestlers: #4 Jorden Douglass-Attica #12 Shawn Hollis-Lowell #14 Tyler Turley-Hobart #17 Cade Johnson-Chesterton Best First Round Match(es): Aidan Pollitt-Valparaiso vs Jessiah Marsh-South Bend Riley Garrett Stuckman-Wawasee vs Jerome Tra Anderson Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #4 Jordan Douglass-Attica vs Pollitt/Marsh winner #14 Tyler Turley-Hobart vs #17 Cade Johnson-Chesterton HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Jordan Douglass-Attica 2. Shawn Hollis-Lowell 3. Tyler Turley-Hobart 4. Garrett Stuckman-Wawasee 160 This weight is very open, but it does have a favorite. Crown Point’s Noah Hollendonner is a slight favorite to win this weight due to him making it last year and his wins on the year but, he does have some weird loses as well. The Penn freshman Aaron Steenbeke is back after missing some time this year but is back and has a good shot at making it to the bank this year. Steenbeke’s toughest match to make it out will be his first one against Columbia City’s Ryan Breedlove. Chesterton senior Nick Winland will have a 1 loss Jason Tankersley, Winamac, in the ticket round, but the competition Winland has seen this year will be the difference in this match. Jacob Linky, Warsaw, did himself a big favor by winning his regional. Linky should cruise in his first state berth. In the semifinals, Hollendonner beats Linky, while Steenbeke advances to the finals with a win over Winland. Hollendonner picks up a semi-state crown, Winland finishes 3rd. 2019 Champ: Donnell Washington-Portage Ranked Wrestlers: #9 Noah Hollendonner-Crown Point #13 Nick Winland-Chesterton #16 Aaron Steenbeke-Penn Best First Round Match(es): #16 Aaron Steenbeke-Penn vs Ryan Breedlove-Columbia City Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Hayden Homoky-Hobart vs Steenbeke/Breedlove winner HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Noah Hollendonner-Crown Point 2. Aaron Steenbeke-Penn 3. Nick Winland-Chesterton 4. Jacob Linky-Warsaw 170 This weight belongs to Graham Calhoun, Plymouth. Even with such a heavy favorite at the weight, this is one of the more interesting weights in the tournament. A big first round match-up in this weight happens at the top of the bracket between Lowell’s Abel Verbeek and McCutcheon’s Spencer Phillips. Verbeek was a state qualifier last year but has a tough match right away. It may all be a moot point, as the winner runs into 5th ranked Braden Welch, Culver Academies. I don’t see either beating Welch. Below them, we have a tough Cody Timmerman form Mishawaka against LaPorte’s Matt Neff. Neff has had a good season has risen in the ranking through the year. I look for him to win this match-up. Aiden Sneed, Kankakee Valley, is good enough to make it downtown but has Calhoun waiting for him in the ticket round. In the bottom of the bracket, Hobart’s Jacob Simpson and Chesterton’s Gavin Layman will meet in the ticket round. Layman won the first match 3-0. In the semis, Calhoun and Welch roll into the finals. Calhoun wins the weight, Neff picks up another win over Layman. 2019 Champ: Graham Calhoun-Plymouth Ranked Wrestlers: #1 Graham Calhoun-Plymouth #5 Braden Welch-Culver Academies #11 Matt Neff-LaPorte #12 Gavin Layman-Chesterton #13 Spencer Phillips-McCutcheon #17 Aiden Sneed-Kankakee Valley Best First Round Match(es): #13 Spencer Phillips-McCutcheon vs Abel Verbeek-Lowell Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #5 Braden Welch-Culver Academies vs Phillips/Verbeek winner #11 Matt Neff-LaPorte vs Cody Timmerman-Mishawaka #1 Graham Calhoun-Plymouth vs #17 Aiden Sneed-Kankakee Valley #12 Gavin Layman-Chesterton vs Jacob Simpson-Hobart HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Graham Calhoun-Plymouth 2. Braden Welch-Culver Academies 3. Matt Neff-LaPorte 4. Gavin Layman-Chesterton 182 This is another weight with an overwhelming favorite. Mishawaka’s Joseph Walker will run away with this weight class. As far as the rest of this weight, I look for the four regional champs to win their quarter brackets. West Lafayette’s Connor Barket comes in with one loss on the season, but probably has the toughest path of the regional champs to make it downtown. While Hobarts Cameron Smith and Chesterton’s Shae Jackson do not have great records, they have been tested this year wrestling better competition. Barket will have the winner of these two. I still see the sophomore making it downtown. In the semis, Walker stays unbeaten and Walton beats Kwiatkowski for the second time this year. Walker rolls in the finals and Barket drops another match to finish 4th. 2019 Champ: Evan Bates-Chesterton Ranked Wrestlers: #1 Joseph Walker-Mishawaka #8 Khris Walton-Merrillville #9 Colin Kwiatkowski-Valparaiso #20 Connor Barket-West Lafayette Best First Round Match(es): Shae Jackson-Chesterton vs Cameron Smith-Hobart #8 Khris Walton-Merrillville vs Hunter Rohweder-Lowell Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #20 Connor Barket-West Lafayette vs Jackson/Smith winner HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1.Joseph Walker-Mishawaka 2. Khris Walton-Merrillville 3. Colin Kwiatkowski-Valparaiso 4. Connor Barket-West Lafayette 195 This is the 3rd weight in a row with a heavy favorite. The field is closer to Mishawaka’s Jacob LaPlace than the other two, but he is still favorited over anyone in this weight. Attica’s Jack Hargan comes in undefeated, but has the unfortunate luck of having Eli Pack, Culver Academies, waiting for him in the ticket round. I look for Pack to win here and, in the semis, to set up a rematch against LaPlace. Penn’s Ben Kahl is a hammer on top and strong making him a tough match for anyone. Kahl has Mark Mummey, Hobart, in the first round. If he wins here, he wrestles Chesterton sophomore Gage DeMarco. I see DeMarco continuing the streak of young Chesterton big guys getting to state. Jevonte Williams, Merrillville, and Brock Hueber, Warsaw, looks to be a good opening round match. Luke Bakeis, Harrison (WL), will wrestle the winner of these two, and I see him coming away victorious here. In the semifinals LaPlace beats Bakeis and Pack gets a win over DeMarco, setting up a rematch from last week. Until he beats him you have to go with LaPlace in the rematch as well. DeMarco beats Bakeis to finish 3rd. 2019 Champ: Rockne Hurley-Penn Ranked Wrestlers: #2 Jacob LaPlace-Mishawaka #7 Jack Hargan-Attica #8 Eli Pack-Culver Academies #18 Ben Kahl-Penn Best First Round Match(es): #18 Ben Kahl-Penn vs Mark Mummey-Hobart Jevonte Williams-Merrillville vs Brock Hueber-Warsaw Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Gage DeMarco-Chesterton vs Mummey/Kahl winner #7 Jack Hargan-Attica vs #8 Eli Pack-Culver Academies Luke Bakeis-Harrison (WL) vs Hueber/Williams winner HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Jacob LaPlace-Mishawaka 2. Eli Pack-Culver Academies 3. Gage DeMarco-Chesterton 4. Luke Bakeis-Harrison (WL) 220 Two juniors with state experience headline this weight. Chesterton’s Evan Bates and Merrillville’s Jason Streck have wrestled twice this year already, with Bates coming out on top both times. Also, in this bracket is returning state placer Will Crider, Harrison (WL), who placed at heavyweight last year but is now down at 220. Another heavyweight who is down to 220 is Mishawka’s Jonathan Thomas. Thomas has wrested heavyweight most of the year and dropped down to 220 for the postseason. He should have Hobart’s Bobby Babcock in the ticket round. I look for Thomas to beat Babcock and make a trip to the bank. In the semis Streck beats Crider and Bates beats Thomas. Bates continues his dominant season with another semi-state title. Thomas beats Crider for 3rd place. 2019 Champ: AJ Fowler-Calumet Ranked Wrestlers: #1 Evan Bates-Chesterton #6 Jason Streck-Merrillville #9 Jonathan Thomas-Mishawaka #12 Will Crider-Harrison (WL) Best First Round Match(es): Ethan Alderson-Lake Station Edison vs Jacob Raub-Lafayette Jefferson Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #1 Evan Bates-Chesterton vs Raub/Alderson #9 Jonathan Thomas-Mishawaka vs Bobby Babcock-Hobart HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Will Crider-Harrison (WL) 285 Yehezquel DeVault, Penn, comes in as a returning state placer-winner and is the favorite to win this weight this weekend. DeVault’s finals opponent should be Portage’s Damari Dancy, who was a surprise state qualifier a year ago but a favorite to take home a medal next weekend. The best ticket round in this weight will be between New Prairie’s Hunter Whitenack and Highland’s Sam Perez. I see Perez coming out on top in this match-up making it to the bank in his final season. Hobart’s Chad McLean is my pick for a 4 over a 1 in this weight. I look for him to be the fourth man out in this weight. In the semifinals Dancy and DeVault win setting up a rematch. Perez beat McLean for the 4th time to finish 3rd. DeVault beats Dancy again to claim his semi-state title. 2019 Champ: Alex Cartwright-LaVille Ranked Wrestlers: #4 Damari Dancy-Portage #7 Yehezquel DeVault-Penn #15 Sam Perez-Highland #16 Chad McLean-Hobart Best First Round Match(es): #15 Sam Perez-Highland vs Kayden Sowders-Lafayette Jefferson #16 Chad McLean-Hobart vs Mariere Omonode-West Lafayette Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #7 Yehezquel DeVault-Penn vs Seth Chrisman-Harrison (WL) Hunter Whitenack-New Prairie vs Perez/Sowders winner HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Evansville Mater Dei advances Brownsburg vs Chesterton Chesterton presents a weird matchup for everyone. They have a back half of a lineup that is better than probably anyone’s. Lemely and Torres on the bottom half give them wins down low. Brownsburg has 4 IHSWCA titles for a reason and it isn’t by luck. They have good guys up and down their lineup and are a good team again this year with a chance to win it again. With that being said I’m picking Chesterton to knock off Brownsburg. I have Chesterton winning 8 weights; 120, 138 (Torres bumps), 145, 152, 160, 182, 195, and 220. None of those would be upsets and on paper Chesterton would be the favorite in those. Now Brownsburg can get wins at a few of those securing the dual, like 138 and 145. Chesterton advances Indianapolis Cathedral vs Perry Meridian This is going to be a great dual and matchups are everything. Both teams are going to have some tricks up their sleeve and this dual may come down to the coin flip at the beginning of the dual. This dual will have several great matchups, such as the matches at 106, 113, 138, 170, and 220. In my opinion, while it is a little bit bias, this is the dual to watch in the first round. With that being said Cathedral has routinely found a way to do it in the past and I could see them doing it again. Cathedral advances Carmel vs Warren Central Warren is a terrible matchup for the Greyhounds and I see them rolling into the semi-finals here. There should be some good matches here around the top, but Carmel has way too many holes to be competitive here. Warren Central advances Semi-finals Warren Central vs Cathedral We saw this dual earlier in the year and it was really close, Warren winning 33-32. Looking over the previous matchups, I don’t really see what Cathedral could do differently to change the results of this dual. They lost a close one at 113 last time, but also pulled off an upset at 120. In my opinion Cathedral wrestled a great dual the first time and still weren’t able to win, and I see a similar result here. Warren Central advances Chesterton vs Mater Dei Chesterton will have to rely on their “murder’s row” to have a chance in this dual because this Mater Dei team resembles Crown Point a lot. Down low, Chesterton will probably only get one win here, so those big guys will need to carry them if they want a chance to make the finals. There’s a scenario where Chesterton wins the swing marches and this dual is tight or Mater Dei wins them all and it’s a blowout. Due to Chesterton having to be nearly perfect to win this dual it’s hard for me to pick them here. Mater Dei advances Finals Mater Dei vs Warren Central There’s only one team that really matched up well with Mater Dei in this bracket, and it’s the Warriors of Warren Central. Warren just matches up well with the Wildcats and where Mater Dei is good, Warren is just a bit better. Mater Dei has a lot more elite level guys but, their “bad” kids will be really outmatched and more than likely give up a quality decision. I see this dual going 8 matches to 6 for the Warriors. - State Finals Preview (152-285)
152 We may have already seen the finals at this weight class last weekend at New Castle. Warren Central’s Brice Coleman has been dominant all year and even with a terrible draw he should roll to the finals. On the other side of the bracket, is probably the second-best kid in the tournament, East Central’s Bryer Hall. Hall has lost the last two matches against Coleman, the last one being by fall. Another wrestler in this weight is Danville’s Logan Boe who bring in a perfect record. Boe and Hall are scheduled to meet in the semis, with the winner facing Coleman. Coleman has 4th ranked Jordan Douglass, Attica, Friday night, then 3rd ranked Jonatan Kervin Saturday morning. In the semis he should Boonville’s Jordan Fulks, who took his first loss of the season this past weekend. Some good Frida night matches to watch are between Garrett Stuckman, Wawasee, and Lawrence Central’s Tyler Jones. Jones could pull out a 4 over 1 here. Stuckman is undefeated but due to him sitting most of the year he has not been tested much. Another good one at this weight happens n the bottom side of the bracket between Zionsville’s Shane Bates and Hobart’s Tyler Turley. Bates is having a surprisingly good season this year, and I look for it to continue into Saturday morning. Coleman finishes what he started and wins himself a state title this weekend. 2019 Champ: Elliott Rodgers-Cathedral Ranked Wrestlers (12/16): #1 Brice Coleman-Warren Central #2 Bryer Hall-East Central #3 Jonathan Kervin-Floyd Central #4 Jordan Douglass-Attica #5 Logan Boe-Danville #7 Jordan Fulks-Boonville #10 Shane Bates-Zionsville #11 Cody McCune-Huntington North #12 Shawn Hollis-Lowell #14 Tyler Turley-Hobart #15 Eli Hilger-Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger #18 Tyler Jones-Lawrence Central Friday Night Matches: Garret Stuckman(16-0)-Wawasee vs #18 Tyler Jones(28-7)-Lawrence Central #11 Cody McCune(36-2)-Huntington North vs #7 Jordan Fulks(43-1)-Boonville #1 Brice Coleman(43-0)-Warren Central vs #4 Jordan Douglass(37-4)-Attica #3 Jonathan Kervin(40-2)-Floyd Central vs Ethan Mason(37-2)-Tri-Central #5 Logan Boe(39-0)-Danville vs #15 Eli Hilger(31-5)-Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger #10 Shane Bates(38-2)-Zionsville vs #14 Tyler Turley(34-7)-Hobart Aidan Hardcastle(41-2)-Oak Hill vs Anthony Walker(33-7)-Greenwood #12 Shawn Hollis(34-4)-Lowell vs #2 Bryer Hall(40-1)-East Central HOOSIERMAT TOP 8: 1. Aidan Hardcastle-Oak Hill 160 This weight is a four-man race. There are four guys here that a way above the rest of the field. Those four are Greenfield-Central’s Cooper Noehre, Cathedral’s Elliott Rodgers, Evansville Mater Dei’s Eli Dickens, and Prairie Heights Isiah Levitz. Before I get the semi finals with those four, there are some big Friday night matches to look at first. Crown Point’s Noah Hollendonner wrestles Tytus Morrisett of Eastern (Greentown). Morrisett took his first two loses this past weekend finishing 4th at the semi-state. Hollendonner is as solid as it gets and must be the favorite here but despite what happened last weekend Morrisett is good enough to pull the upset. The biggest coin flip match in this weight is between Columbus East’s Sam Morrill and Lawrenceburg’s Andrew Roth. Roth looked impressive this past weekend but has not been tested much this year. Morrill has wrestled tough guys all year, beating most of them. Back to the big four, I determined my state champion pick before the tournament even started based on the matchups. Here is my breakdown for the weight, in my opinion: Eli Dickens beat Levitz and Rogers Isiah Levitz beats Rogers Cooper Noehre beats Levitz and Dickens Elliott Rodgers beats Noehre So, depending on how the bracket fell I already knew who I would pick to win this weight. In the semis Noehre beats Levitz and while its never smart to go against the champ, Dickens has had Rogers’s number this year and its hard for me to see that changing. In the finals we get a rematch of last years state semi finals where Noehre came out on top. I know that Dickens beat Noehre this off season but that was in a shorted match and has to be taken with a grain of salt. Noehre gets the title he let get away from him a year ago. 2019 Champ: Jordan Slivka-Cathedral Ranked Wrestlers (12/16): #1 Eli Dickens-Evansville Mater Dei #2 Isiah Levitz-Prairie Heights #3 Elliott Rodgers-Cathedral #4 Cooper Noehre-Greenfield-Central #5 Jackson Pettigrew-Columbia City #8 Sam Morrill-Columbus East #9 Noah Hollendonner-Crown Point #10 Peyton Asbury-Brownsburg #11 Damon McClain-Warren Central #13 Nick Winland-Chesterton #15 Tytus Morrisett-Eastern (Greentown) #16 Aaron Steenbeke-Penn Friday Night Matches: #9 Noah Hollendonner(37-4)-Crown Point vs #15 Tytus Morrisett(41-2)-Eastern (Greentown) #4 Cooper Noehre(33-2)-Greenfield-Central vs #10 Peyton Asbury(36-6)-Brownsburg #2 Isiah Levitz(40-0)-Prairie Heights vs #13 Nick Winland(30-8)-Chesterton #8 Sam Morrill(29-5)-Columbus East vs Andrew Roth(43-2)-Lawrenceburg #3 Elliott Rodgers(38-3)-Cathedral vs Sam Schroeder(39-5)-Southridge Jacob Linky(34-4)-Warsaw vs #5 Jackson Pettigrew(35-2)-Columbia City #1 Eli Dickens(37-2)-Evansville Mater Dei vs #11 Damon McClain(29-8)-Warren Central Jed Perry(41-2)-Southern Wells vs #16 Aaron Steenbeke(26-7)-Penn HOOSIERMAT TOP 8: 1. Jackson Pettigrew-Columbia City 8. Andrew Roth-Lawrenceburg 170 Plymouth’s Graham Calhoun comes in as the top ranked wrestler in this weight, with a win over the 2nd ranked Tristan Ruhlman, Bloomington South. There is a lot or parity at this weight, outside of Calhoun. This weight is full of coin flip matches on Friday night. The first being at the top of the bracket between Carmel’s Gabe Davin and Elkhart Memorial’s Clayton Lundy. Lundy pulled off the upset last weekend to punch his ticket downtown. Both these guys are strong and big for the weight. Davin has a good go to leg attack, and he has been able to consistently get it on everyone. Davin takes this match and gets a medal. The biggest Friday night match at this weight is between two top 5 guys at the weight. Braden Welch, Culver Academies, and Ruhlman are set to meet on Friday. Welch has had an unfortunate draw the last two years, drawing Castle’s Robert Deters last year. I look for Ruhlman to be too much for Welch and for the junior to get his first medal. Saturday morning matches on the bottom side of the bracket should be great. Evansville Mater Dei’s Gabe Sollars and Cathedral’s Tyler Wagner meet Saturday morning with a team title on the line. Sollars helps Mater Dei’s title hopes with a win here. Above them we get a rematch from Al Smith, where Ruhlman pinned Garret’s Clay Fielden in the quarterfinals. This was a weird match and I don’t see a similar result happening here. Mater Dei should hope Ruhlman wins here since Sollars has had his number giving them a good chance to end up in the finals. Up top Deters and Calhoun cruise to the finals, where Calhoun beats Deters. Calhoun wins a title in his senior campaign. 2019 Champ: Nick South-Columbus East Ranked Wrestlers(12/16): #1 Graham Calhoun-Plymouth #2 Tristan Ruhlman-Bloomington South #3 Robert Deters-Castle #4 Clay Fielden-Garrett #5 Braden Welch-Culver Academies #6 Gabe Sollars-Evansville Mater Dei #7 Tyler Wagner-Cathedral #10 Bradley Harrington-North Central #12 Gavin Layman-Chesterton #14 Clayton Lundy-Elkhart Memorial #18 Jalen Ward-Franklin Community #20 Gabe Davin-Carmel Friday Night Matches: #1 Graham Calhoun(43-0)-Plymouth vs #18 Jalen Ward(35-7)-Franklin Community #20 Gabe Davin(35-4)-Carmel vs #14 Clayton Lundy(39-6)-Elkhart Memorial #3 Robert Deters(41-1)-Castle vs Cody Timmerman(29-10)-Mishawka Brodie Porter(41-2)-Eastern (Greentown) vs #10 Bradley Harrington(44-3)-North Central #4 Clay Fielden(39-1)-Garrett vs Marcus Malson(40-6)-Rushville #2 Tristan Ruhlman(37-3)-Bloomington South vs #5 Braden Welch(27-4)-Culver Academies #7 Tyler Wagner(36-5)-Cathedral vs Jacob Duncan(41-3)-Southern Wells #12 Gavin Layman(37-6)-Chesterton vs #6 Gabe Sollars(34-5)-Evansville Mater Dei HOOSIERMAT TOP 8: 1. Tyler Wagner-Cathedral 8. Gabe Davin-Carmel 182 This is a weight you point to when arguing against random draws. 3 of the top 4 kids in the state are in the same quarter-bracket. A team title can be lost right here in the opening match of the weight. 2nd ranked Macartney Parkinson, Evansville Mater Dei, takes on top ranked Joseph Walker, Mishawaka, Friday. If Walker is healthy come Friday, he will win this weight, but if he looks like he did this past weekend, he will not win this match Friday. Everyone is speculating on how healthy he is, but no one knows but Walker and his coaches. Regardless the winner of this match has a tough one on Saturday morning against 4th ranked Mason Winner, Jay County. I don’t Winner is on the level of either of these guys and loses this match. Merrillville’s Khris Walton and Lutheran’s Hayden Filipovich should both win their matches Friday night and meet in the quarters. I look for Filipovich to win this match, due to having just a little more wrestling skill than Walton. Walton is a strong athlete though and can take this match from Filipovich. The winner loses to the Parkinson/Walker winner. At the bottom of the bracket Perry Meridian’s Aiden Warren and Columbus East’s Noah white should win setting up their third match this year. Warren has taken the first two and I don’t see that changing here. Below them we have two good Friday matches. NorthWood’s Jake Lone wrestle East Central’s Kole Viel on Friday. Lone is the favorite here but Viel is a big strong kid and could make it a match. Valparaiso’s Colin Kwiatkowski and Center Grove’s Drake Buchanan meet on Friday night and while Kwiatkowski is a returning state qualifier, he has not wrestled much top-level competition this year. I think that will be his downfall here. Buchanan has wrestled some of the best kids in the state and that will be the difference here. Lone beats Buchanan again here setting up a semifinal match with Warren here. Sophomore Lone lost to Warren’s older brother and I see this Warren doing the same thing, making his first finals. In the finals we get a rematch of Warren and Parkinson, and not very many people have beaten Warren multiple times and I don’t see that changing here. The junior gets his first state title. 2019 Champ: Carson Brewer-Avon Ranked Wrestlers (14/16): #1 Joseph Walker-Mishawka #2 Macartney Parkinson-Evansville Mater Dei #3 Aiden Warren-Perry Meridian #4 Mason Winner-Jay County #5 Jake Lone-NorthWood #6 Johnny Parker-Cathedral #7 Noah White-Columbus East #8 Khris Walton-Merrillville #9 Colin Kwiatkowski-Valparaiso #10 Hayden Filipovich-Lutheran #11 Drake Buchanan-Center Grove #12 Brendan McPike-Terre Haute South #16 Kole Viel-East Central #20 Connor Barket-West Lafayette Friday Night Matches: #2 Macartney Parkinson(38-2)-Evansville Mater Dei vs #1 Joseph Walker(29-2)-Mishawka #6 Johnny Parker(35-6)-Cathedral vs #4 Mason Winner(41-1)-Jay County #8 Khris Walton(39-4)-Merrillville vs #12 Brendan McPike(33-3)-Terre Haute South Zian Constable(38-5)-Peru vs #10 Hayden Filipovich(33-4)-Lutheran #3 Aiden Warren(34-3)-Perry Meridian vs Sam Walker(27-9)-Norwell #7 Noah White(36-6)-Columbus East vs #20 Connor Barket(43-2)-West Lafayette #5 Jake Lone(38-2)-NorthWood vs #16 Kole Viel(45-4)-East Central #9 Colin Kwiatkowski(41-2)-Valparaiso vs #11 Drake Buchanan(37-3)-Center Grove HOOSIERMAT TOP 8: 1. Allred has found an opponent who can finish a match with him, and I do not know if I see that changing this weekend. Outside of Allred, there’s another undefeated wrestler in this weight class. Mishawaka’s Jacob LaPlace has buzz sawed his way through much of the wrestlers he has face this season. I look for him to make a trip to the finals, even though he has a tough JD Farrell, Fishers, waiting for him in the semis. Outside of those three, there top quarter-bracket has a one of the better Friday night matches in this weight. Brownsburg’s Isaiah Street and Eli Pack, Culver Academies, wrestle to place and if Brownsburg wants any shot at winning ra team title they need to win this match because I see the winner here making the semis. I am taking the junior in this match and the next one against Mississinewa senior Kyler Funk. Silas decks LaPlace to win his second state title. 2019 Champ: Silas Allred-Shenandoah Ranked Wrestlers (13/16): #1 Silas Allred-Shenandoah #2 Jacob LaPlace-Mishawaka #3 JD Farrell-Fishers #5 McKinley Kemper-Evansville Central #6 Phoenix Rodgers-Heritage Hills #8 Eli Pack-Culver Academies #9 Kyler Funk-Mississinewa #10 Isaiah Street-Brownsburg #11 Caden Friedt-Bellmont #12 Harris Eason-Franklin Community #13 Matt Lepper-Carroll (Fort Wayne) #17 Jacob Huffman-Cathedral #20 Ibrahim Khaoucha-Northridge Friday Night Matches: #9 Kyler Funk(41-2)-Mississinewa vs Richard Clevenger(34-7)-New Palestine #10 Isaiah Street(34-9)-Brownsburg vs #8 Eli Pack(33-2)-Culver Academies #1 Silas Allred(35-0)-Shenandoah vs #20 Ibrahim Khaoucha(38-6)-Northridge Luke Bakeis(35-8)-Harrison (WL) vs #5 McKinley Kemper-Evansville Central #2 Jacob LaPlace(42-0)-Mishawaka vs #12 Harris Eason(37-4)-Franklin Community #17 Jacob Huffman(29-11)-Cathedral vs #11 Caden Friedt(36-4)-Bellmont #6 Phoenix Rodgers(44-2)-Heritage Hills vs Gage DeMarco(38-9)-Chesterton #13 Matt Lepper(38-3)-Carroll (Fort Wayne) vs #3 JD Farrell(38-2)-Fishers HOOSIERMAT TOP 8: 1. McKinley Kemper-Evansville Central 220 Chesterton’s Evan Bates started the year at 195 and was a lock to make the finals, now he is up at 220 and is a heavy favorite to win it. Bate rolled to a semi-state title a week ago and could do the same this weekend. Unfortunately for us the two best kids in this weight are on the same side of the bracket. North Montgomery’s Drew Webster brings in an undefeated record in the state finals and is currently ranked 2nd at this weight. Webster was looked at a favorite last year but would settle for 5th. Webster should meet Bates in the semifinals. The finals in this weight will happen in that match. At the top of the bracket we have a good Friday night match between Merrillville’s Jason Streck and Franklin Central’s Deshawn Young. Streck hit a big growth spurt, up from 170 a year ago. I look for Young’s size to give Streck issues and to ultimately be the difference here. In the next match you have a kid who started his career at 113, now up to 220 as a senior. North Posey’s Nathan Willman comes in with 1 loss on the year, which he avenged, and can make the finals. He will first have to beat Young, which I see happening. His semi-final opponent will be between the winner of Will Crider, Harrison (WL) and Cale Gray, Norwell. Gray brings in an undefeated record and is my pick to win this match, but Crider is tall and a tough match-up for anyone. Crider pulled off the “upset” a year ago tot make the semis, so he knows that it takes to win here. In the semis Bates over Webster and Gray over Willman. Bates rolls in the finals for his first state championship. 2019 Champ: AJ Fowler-Calumet Ranked Wrestlers (11/16): #1 Evan Bates-Chesterton #2 Drew Webster-North Montgomery #3 Cale Gray-Norwell #4 Will Stewart-South Spencer #5 Nate Willman-North Posey #6 Jason Streck-Merrillville #7 Micah Dodson-Martinsville #8 Deshawn Young-Franklin Central #9 Jonathan Thomas-Mishawka #12 Will Crider-Harrison (WL) #19 Haakon Van Beynen-Carmel Friday Night Matches: #5 Nate Willman(43-1)-North Posey vs Grant Warmuth(29-7)-Wabash #6 Jason Streck(38-3)-Merrillville vs #8 Deshawn Young(33-2)-Franklin Central #3 Cale Gray(33-0)-Norwell vs Reese Condon(32-11)-Mooresville #12 Will Crider(32-4)-Harrison (WL) vs Blaine Pierce(36-4)-Richmond #1 Evan Bates(37-1)-Chesterton vs #19 Haakon Van Beynen(26-10)-Carmel #4 Will Stewart(41-4)-South Spencer vs Tristen Martz(34-4)-New Haven #2 Drew Webster(41-0)-North Montgomery vs #9 Jonathan Thomas(31-5)-Mishawka Fred Durben(42-1)-Oak Hill vs #7 Micah Dodson(39-2)-Martinsville HOOSIERMAT TOP 8: 1. Deshawn Young-Franklin Central 285 While it is hard to bet against the defending state champ, this is heavyweight, and anything can happen. Brownsburg Dorian Keys comes in to defend his state title from a year ago. The brackets did him no favors as he will have the only guy to really push him this year in the semifinals. Friday night has several matches that you will want to keep your eye on. Starting the top, Mooresville’s Robert Gentry wrestles Warren Central Dennis Hubbard on Friday night. Gentry has a win over Keys in the last year. I see Gentry taking this match. Another Friday night match to watch is at the bottom of the bracket between Highland’s Sam Perez and Western’s Braydon Erb. Erb has looked good since moving up from 220 and should eb the pick to win this match Friday. Keys and Irick should meet again in the semi-finals, and while I know it is unwise to pick against the champ, like 160, I see Irick winning this rematch. At the top of the bracket Portage’s Damari Dancy was a surprise state qualifier a year ago, This year, he a finals threat at his new weight class. I do not see him beating Monroe Central’s Logan Swallow, who is also unbeaten on the year. I look for Swallow to be the other finalist in this weight. Each Irick has done better than the previous one and I think Andrew gets the state title his brothers couldn’t. 2019 Champ: Dorian Keys-Brownsburg Ranked Wrestlers (12/16): #1 Dorian Keys-Brownsburg #2 Andrew Irick-Hamilton Southeastern #3 Logan Swallow-Monroe Central #4 Damari Dancy-Portage #6 Reeve Muncie-Carroll (Fort Wayne) #8 Holden Parsons-Cathedral #9 Antone Alexander-Franklin Central #11 Dennis Hubbard-Warren Central #12 Braydon Erb-Western #13 Robbie Gentry-Mooresville #15 Sam Perez-Highland #20 Jacob Johnson-Franklin Community Friday Night Matches: #4 Damari Dancy(34-2)-Portage vs Jose Rosales(39-8)-Goshen #11 Dennis Hubbard(27-9)-Warren Central vs #13 Robbie Gentry(36-5)-Mooresville #3 Logan Swallow(44-0)-Monroe Central vs Andrew Himes(20-7)-Plymouth Ke’Tre Dickens(13-6)-Avon vs #8 Holden Parsons(34-4)-Cathedral #1 Dorian Keys(42-0)-Brownsburg vs #9 Antone Alexander(36-6)-Franklin Central Andres Larios(27-6)-Hammond Clark vs #6 Reeve Muncie(38-3)-Carroll (Fort Wayne) #2 Andrew Irick(34-1)-Hamilton Southeastern vs #20 Jacob Johnson(32-9)-Franklin Community #12 Braydon Erb(42-3)-Western vs #15 Sam Perez(27-5)-Highland HOOSIERMAT TOP 8: 1. Franklin is the favorite to win this bracket and should breeze through this matchup. There aren’t a whole lot of matchups to watch here since Terre Haute’s best kids don’t match up with any of Franklin’s better guys. Franklin advances Northridge vs East Central Northridge has some solid guys but not the guys to take out East Central. Nearly every kid on Central’s roster has a name that you probably know and those guys are all tough. East Central advances Hobart vs Mishawaka While I do believe this is a better matchup for Hobart, I still don’t see them beating Mishawaka in this one. It will be a close dual but I see the Cavemen winning 8 matches in this dual and that will be the deciding factor. While Hobart’s better guys are better than Mishawaka’s, Mishawaka has tough guys to prevent them from picking up quality wins. Mishawaka advances Roncalli vs Floyd Central Due to a late change, Floyd Central gets the call to wrestle this weekend. They are a tough team and with Roncalli being down this year, they should roll here. Roncalli is having a year where they are taking their lumps and I can’t see them being competitive in this matchup. Floyd Central advances Semi-finals Franklin Community vs East Central This is going to be a great dual and East Central has matchups they want here and could pull off the upset here. If you go through the matchups, East Central’s fate comes down to their “bad” kids. They will match up against the better guys for Franklin and if they want any chance of winning this dual those guys have to stay off their back. Franklin is well coached and I see their guys doing their job. Franklin Community advances Mishawaka vs Floyd Central The thing that makes no sense here is that Floyd Central gets pulled in and gets gifted the second seed here. I know it’s a last minute thing and I don’t think they are the 8th team here but they should not be the 2 seed here. With all that being said, Floyd Central will be getting a late Christmas gift by making the finals here with the late invite. Floyd Central has a handful of hammers and are a solid team, and I am somewhat surprised that they did not get invited in the first place. Mishawaka has a more complete team from top to bottom, but lack the hammers. Monrovia is undefeated but I haven’t really been tested yet this year. I see that being the deciding factor here. New Haven advances Wawasee vs Jay County Wawasse has been a tough team the past few seasons, but lost a lot from last year. Jay County has a great group of young guys at those lower weights but not too much up top. Both teams have issues giving up quality decisions up top so they need to make sure those guys are ready to go because that’s where the dual will be won. Jay County has done great in duals this year so I have to give them the nod here. Jay County advances New Prairie vs Oak Hill Oak Hill is a point away from being undefeated this year. They have beaten up on several teams that will be wrestling this weekend. They are the favorite here and will roll in this match. Oak Hill advances Norwell vs Jimtown Jimtown has been a proven commodity for the last few years and they should expect to advance in this match up. They have tough guys throughout their lineup but most importantly they have solid big guys. I have always believed that teams with good big guys are always good. Jimtown advances Second Round Bellmont vs New Haven Bellmont has way too much fire power for New Haven and will roll into the semi-finals, which they should since they were rightfully given the top seed. Bellmont advances Mount Vernon (Posey) vs Jay County This is an interesting matchup to me because MV has wrestled a lot of tough 4A teams and while they have taken their lumps, they have been competitive in most of those dual. On the other hand though, Jay County has been rolling teams this year. Looking at mutual opponents, MV beat the team that gave Jay County its only loss on the year, and I know wrestling math rarely works but I am taking MV here. Mount Vernon (Posey) advances Western vs Oak Hill This may end up being the most competitive dual of the round. Western should win this dual with their “hammers” getting plenty of quality decisions to put this dual away. Western advances Garrett vs Jimtown Garrett has a good team with solid lower weights. Usually the team that has the most “guaranteed” wins will win the dual and I don’t like the idea of Jimtown having to win a bunch of swing matches to be able to win this dual. Garrett advances Semi-finals Bellmont vs Mount Vernon (Posey) If MV can keep it competitive at the lower weights they can have a chance when they get to those upper weights. I honestly can see that happening with them stealing a match or two then rolling at the up top. Mount Vernon (Posey) advances Garrett vs Western Western has more top level guys than Garrett and more matches where they are heavy favorites to win. Garrett will pick up their falls at the first few weights but after that I Western taking over this dual and I know that it is unlikely, but neither of the top seeded teams make the finals in this class Western advances Finals MV is a team with no really big names, but they are one of the most complete teams here. Western will win the matches they are supposed to, and so will MV but I see Wildcats winning most of the swing matches. Their schedule has them battle tested and is the difference in them winning a state title here. IHSWCA 2ATeam State Champions-Mount Vernon (Posey) 2A Team State Preview BACK

106 With last years champ up at 120 now, this weight will have a new king come Saturday night. Brownsburg Logan Miller has risen to being ranked 1st in the state and has the wins to back that ranking up. Miller has wins over the #2 and #3 ranked kids in the state this season. I look for Miller to continue to dominate and win this weight Saturday. Good early round matches in this weight are between Reed Egli of Evansville Mater Dei, who was a borderline rankable guy most of the year, and Lou Knable of Floyd Central. Another match in that first round to watch is Center Grove’s Michael LaRocca and Crawford County’s Donnie Feeler. In the ticket round we get the rubber match between Coy Hammack, Tell City, and Blake Zirklebach, North Posey, who have split matches this year. Hammack lost a close 9-8 decision earlier this year before pinning Zirklebach later in the year. While I do not think he will have much trouble; Cash Turner of Edgewood does have a tough opponent in Whiteland’s Elijah Brooks. I see Kyler west beating whoever comes out of the Feeler/LaRocca match and being the 4th guy out at this weight. 2019 Champ: Alec Freeman-Evansville Mater Dei Ranked Wrestlers: #1 Logan Miller-Brownsburg #13 Cash Turner-Edgewood #16 Kyler-West-Evansville Reitz Memorial #17 Coy Hammack-Tell City #19 Blake Zirklebach-North Posey Best First Round Match(es): Reed Egli-Evansville Mater Dei vs Lou Knable-Floyd Central Michael LaRocca-Center Grove vs Donnie Feeler-Crawford County Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Coy Hammack-Tell City vs Blake Zirklebach-North Posey #16 Kyler West-Evansville Reitz Memorial vs Feeler/LaRocca winner #13 Cash Turner-Edgewood vs Elijah Brooks-Whiteland HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Logan Miller-Brownsburg 2. Cash Turner-Edgewood 3. Coy Hammack-Tell City 4. Kyler West-Evansville Reitz Memorial 113 This weight is a 3 man race as far as who can come away with a title here. Evansville Mater Dei’s Cole Ross is currently ranked 2nd in the state, and has a close win over Sullivan’s Lane Gilbert, who he should see in the finals on Saturday. First, though, Gilbert will have a tough Logan Sutton, Castle, waiting for him in the ticket round. The biggest ticket round match, in my opinion, is at the top of the bracket between Brownsburg’s Braiden Haines and Columbus East’s Noah Lykins. Both come in with several loses from wrestling a tough schedule this year, and both come from programs that have found a lot of success getting guys downtown. Cheaney Schoeff of Avon should roll into the semi where he will meet Gilbert. Ross should roll into the finals regardless of who wins between Lykins and Haines. This weight is a hard one to pick even with Ross having already beat Sullivan. We’re going to stay chalk and go with he rankings here. 2019 Champ Ben Dalton-Monrovia Ranked Wrestlers: #2 Cole Ross-Evansville Mater Dei #4 Lane Gilbert-Sullivan #5 Cheaney Schoeff-Avon Best First Round Match(es): NONE Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Noah Lykins-Columbus East vs Braiden Haines-Brownsburg #4 Lane Gilbert-Sullivan vs Logan Sutton-Castle HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Cole Ross-Evansville Mater Dei 2. Lane Gilbert-Sullivan 3. Cheaney Schoeff-Avon 4. Braiden Haines-Brownsburg 120 Alec Freeman, Evansville Mater Dei, comes in looking to claim his second semi-state title. Freeman is the favorite at this weight but has a solid field in front of him. Freshman Delaney Ruhlman of Bloomington South took care of business last weak in the regional and put himself in a great position to make it to the bank. Ruhlman will wrestle the winner of returning state qualifier Chris Newman, Mount Vernon (Posey), and Jake Bechert of Franklin Community. Brownsburg’s Gavin Garcia has been solid all year and is a tough out for anyone in the state. 1 loss Colin Knox of Charlestown will wrestler the winner of Garcia and Sam Scott, Heritage Hills, who has been right there the past couple of years. I look for him to get over that hump this year and make it to the bank his senior year. If you told me a Carrington would be going downtown, I would’ve assumed it to be Brach, but little brother Chase comes in with 1 loss and is favorited to make it downtown as a freshman. Chase will have a tough Aydan Amento, Evansville Central, first round. 2019 Champ Brayden Littell-Center Grove Ranked Wrestlers: #5 Alec Freeman-Evansville Mater Dei #13 Delaney Ruhlman-Bloomington South #19 Sam Scott-Heritage Hills #20 Chris Newman-Mount Vernon (Posey) Best First Round Match(es): Chase Carrington-Greencastle vs Aydan Amento-Evansville Central Chris Newman-Mt. Chase Carrington-Greencastle 126 This is probably the toughest weight at any semi-state. 5 top 10 ranked kids in the weight, including a ticket round between two top 5 wrestlers. As tough as this weight is though, Avon’s Ray Rioux is still the big favorite to win this weight. The first round won’t be too exciting due to the skill gap between the top guys at this weight and the field. In the ticket round, however, we have a lot to look forward too. The big one being a rematch of last years 3rd place state match between Gavinn Alstott, Floyd Central, and Ben Dalton of Monrovia. Dalton took his first loss last weekend to Brownsburg Kysen Montgomery giving him this draw. I cannot imagine this is the draw Alstott wanted either. Montgomery has a tough Adonis Boyd from Jeffersonville but Kysen has already been to the bank and wrestled the best in the state and should roll into the semis. Evansville Mater Dei’s Ashton Hayhurst missed weight last year at sectionals but looks comfortable at 126 for the Wildcats. Hayhurst will, probably, wrestle Nicolas Castelluccio of Bloomington South in the ticket round and should make his first trip to the bank. In the finals we could see two “undefeated” wrestlers, as neither has lost to an Indiana kid this year. In the 3rd place match we see a rematch from team state where Montgomery came out on top. 2019 Champ Ray Rioux-Avon Ranked Wrestlers: #1 Ray Rioux-Avon #2 Gavin Alstott-Floyd Central #4 Ben Dalton-Monrovia #7 Kysen Montgomery-Brownsburg #9 Ashton Hayhurst-Evansville Mater Dei Best First Round Match(es): NONE Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #2 Gavin Alstott-Floyd Central vs #4 Ben Dalton-Monrovia Adonis Boyd-Jeffersonville vs #7 Kysen Montgomery-Brownsburg #1 Ray Rioux-Avon vs Jeb Pretchel-Jasper #9 Ashton Hayhurst-Evansville Mater Dei vs Nicolas Castelluccio HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Ray Rioux-Avon 2. Gavin Alstott-Floyd Central 3. Kysen Montgomery-Brownsburg 4. Ashton Hayhurst-Evansville Mater Dei 132 This is another weight with a crazy ticket round match. This weight could give us our first 4 over a 1. Decatur Central’s Conner Alcala is battle tested and could knock off a regional champ in Chase Aldridge, Providence. Alcala will have to wrestle two great matches, with Heritage Hill’s Beau Heeke and West Vigo’s Seth Rohrbach facing the winner. Center Grove’s Hayden Watson is my pick to win this weight. Watson has a tough junior in Christian Polen, Gibson Southern, but I look for him to cruise into the finals. That third quarter bracket is wide open anyone could come out of it. I am leaning towards Plainfield’s Conner Holt due to who he has wrestled and the guys he has beaten this year. The bottom quarter bracket gives us another top 5 match-up with two returning state qualifiers. Both Kane Egli, Evansville Mater Dei, and Tyler Conley, Avon, lost close matches last year to place. Egli and Coney wrestled earlier this year with Egli winning a 3-2 decision. While the score was close Egli controlled the match and this match should look the same way. Whoever wins there should cruise into the finals to meet Watson. 2019 Champ Asa Garcia-Avon Ranked Wrestlers: #3 Kane Egli-Evansville Mater Dei #4 Tyler Conley-Avon #5 Hayden Watson-Center Grove #11 Connor Holt-Plainfield #12 Conner Alcala-Decatur Central Best First Round Match(es): #12 Conner Alcala-Decatur Central vs Chase Aldridge-Providence Beau Heeke-Heritage Hills vs Seth Rohrbach-West Vigo Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Aldridge/Alcala winner vs Heeke/Rohrbach winner #5 Hayden Watson-Center vs Christian Polen-Gibson Southern #11 Connor Holt-Plainfield vs Lane Deckard-Edgewood #3 Kane Egli-Evansville Mater Dei vs #4 Tyler Conley-Avon HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Hayden Watson-Center Grove 2. Kane Egli-Evansville Mater Dei 3. Connor Holt-Plainfield 4. Conner Alcala-Decatur Central 138 Evansville Mater Dei’s Blake Boarman comes in looking to take home his first semi-state title. To do so he will have to beat someone who has beaten him this year in Brownsburg’s Drake Campbell. For the second year in a row, Boarman’s weight has seen the two best kids on the same side of the bracket. As far as first round matches go, do not let Colton Roberts’s record think he doesn’t have a chance here. Roberts has wrestled the best kids in the state and can go with anyone. I do not see either Roberts or Pat Mayes, Boonville, beating JJ Conaway from Floyd Central. Conaway has 1 loss this year, coming to Blake Boarman. Landon Boe, Plainfield, got a great draw and could make it out. Boe should wrestle Columbus East’s Jacob Shaver, who is another wrestler with a deceiving record. Boarman will get his revenge in the semis and capture his first semi-state crown over Conaway. Campbell will settle for 3rd, with the little Boe making his first trip to the bank. 2019 Champ Cayden Rooks-Columbus East Ranked Wrestlers: #1 Blake Boarman-Evansville Mater Dei #5 Drake Campbell-Brownsburg #6 JJ Conaway-Floyd Central #11 Keandre Watson-Columbus North #17 Landon Boe-Plainfield Best First Round Match(es): Colton Roberts-Avon vs Pat Mayes-Boonville Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #5 Drake Campbell-Brownsburg vs Jason Proffit-New Washington #5 Blake Boarman-Evansville Mater Dei vs #11 Keandre Watson-Columbus North #6 JJ Conaway-Floyd Central vs Mayes/Roberts winner HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Blake Boarman-Evansville Mater Dei 2. JJ Conaway-Floyd Central 3. Drake Campbell-Brownsburg 4. Landon Boe-Plainfield 145 This weight is deep and the top quarter bracket at this weight is real tough. We have a ranked match-up right away between Evansville Mater Dei’s Brody Baumann and West Vigo’s Jonathan Otte. I see Baumann coming away with the win here. It does not get any easier from there, though, as he will wrestle the winner of 16th ranked Nick Cicciarelli, Brownsburg, and Shane Braunecker, Tell City. Bloomington North’s Justice Cash won his regional last week and is in a good spot to make his first trip downtown. Cash should see Riley Rust, Center Grove, in the ticket round but should have very little issues getting into the semis. Jaden Reynolds, Avon, is a returning state placer and I cannot see anyone in this bracket stopping him from making the finals at this weight. Tyler Williams, Columbus East, is a tough first round match, but he has been hit or miss a lot this year, so you never really know what you’ll get from him. That bottom quarter bracket is another one that is wide open. Brown County’s David Tucker is the only ranked guy down there, but he is far from a favorite. Tucker will have a well-coached Ethan Nash, Franklin Community first round, with the winner of Ian Geisler, Jasper, and Tristan Martin, North Posey waiting for him. I think Baumann’s schedule has set him up for a strong postseason run and look for him to win this weight. Baumann and Reynolds have split matches this year so I could either way here in the finals. David Tucker should make it though the ticket round before settling for 4th behind Justice Cash. 2019 Champ Matt Lee-Evansville Mater Dei Ranked Wrestlers: #10 Jaden Reynolds-Avon #11 Brody Baumann-Evansville Mater Dei #12 Justice Cash-Bloomington North #16 Nick Cicciarelli-Brownsburg #18 Jonathan Otte-West Vigo #19 David Tucker-Brown County Best First Round Match(es): #11 Brody Baumann-Evansville Mater Dei vs #18 Jonathan Otte-West Vigo #16 Nick Cicciarelli-Brownsburg vs Shane Braunecker-Tell City #10 Jaden Reynolds-Avon vs Tyler Williams-Columbus East Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Baumann/Otte winner vs Cicciarelli/Braunecker winner #12 Justice Cash-Bloomington North vs Riley Rust-Center Grove HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. David Tucker-Brown County 152 This is another weight where, in my opinion, the two best kids in the weight are on the same side of the bracket. Floyd Central’s Jonathan Kervin, a returning state placer, will look to make another trip to the bank. In his way is Evansville Mater Dei’s Scott Fitts, a 2018 state qualifier, and Ben Phillips of Charlestown. Logan Boe, Danville, has made it to the bank every year so far and I do not see that changing this year. This weight could have 4 guys in the semis with a combined record of 142-2. Jordan Fulks, Boonville, has jump levels, and weights, this year and looks to continue his undefeated season. Fulks should wrestle Kade Law, Columbus East, in the semi finals in a must win for both guy since the loser there will probably settle for 4th place. I see two undefeated guys wrestling in the finals with Boe winning the battle of unbeatens. 2019 Champ Eli Dickens-Evansville Mater Dei Ranked Wrestlers: #3 Jonathan Kervin-Floyd Central #5 Logan Boe-Plainfield #6 Scott Fitts-Evansville Mater Dei #7 Jordan Fulks-Boonville #9 Kade Law-Columbus East Best First Round Match(es): #6 Scott Fitts-Evansville Mater Dei vs Ben Phillips-Charlestown Owen Bryant-Gibson Southern vs Corey Braunecker-Tell City Jacob Cookerly-Brownsburg vs Moses Hamm-Terre Haute South Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #7 Jordan Fulks-Boonville vs Hamm/Cookerly winner #3 Jonathan Kervin-Floyd Central vs Fitts/Phillips winner #5 Logan Boe-Plainfield vs Bryant/Braunecker winner HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. The top ranked wrestler in the state has been dominate this year and even a tough as the field is should get though unscathed. Franklin Community’s Tyler Fuqua was a state qualifier in 2018 but will have to get through Dickens if he wants to make another trip downtown. Columbus East’s Sam Morrill comes in as a regional champ and has given himself a good draw to make it to the bank. Morrill should match-up with Bloomington South’s Wade Presson who is trying to get back downtown after qualifying in 2018. Super freshman John Purdy, Castle, had a slip up last week but it gave him a better draw. Purdy should cruise in the semis where he will wrestle Brownsburg’s Peyton Asbury. Asbury the returning state placer may take 4th here as I do not like his chances against Purdy, and he has already lost to Morrill this year. 2019 Champ Peyton Pruett-Center Grove Ranked Wrestlers: #1 Eli Dickens-Evansville Mater Dei #6 John Purdy-Castle #7 Tyler Fuqua-Franklin Community #8 Sam Morrill-Columbus East #10 Peyton Asbury-Brownsburg #19 Wade Presson-Bloomington South Best First Round Match(es): #6 John Purdy-Castle vs Jake Rotert-Seymour #10 Peyton Asbury-Brownsburg vs Nathaniel Lommock-Terre Haute South Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Cadon Deffendoll-Vincennes Lincoln vs Lommock/Asbury winner Sam Schroeder-Southridge vs Rotert/Purdy winner #1 Eli Dickens-Evansville Mater Dei vs #7 Tyler Fuqua HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Freshman Van Skinner comes in as a regional champ, but the draws did not do him any favors, giving him 6th ranked, and returning state qualifier, Gabe Sollars of Evansville Mater Dei. Greencastle’s Brach Carrington picked a bad time to take his first loss, as it resulted in him drawing into Tristan Ruhlman of Bloomington South in the ticket round. I do not see him being able to go Ruhlman. Jalen Ward, Franklin Community, picked up a big win in last weeks regional finals and has a great draw to make it downtown. Owen Sego, Indian Creek, has had a solid year up at 170, but has a tough ticket round match against Robert Deters, a returning state placer from Castle. Sego has the skill to go with anyone, but I think Deters will be a bit too much for him. After the ticket round I see Deter beating Ward to make the finals. Up top we see another Sollars, Ruhlman match. Sollars has owned the series and I see him having that same edge here as he makes the finals. In the finals I look for Deters to get his first semi-state title. 2019 Champ Nick South-Columbus East Ranked Wrestlers: #2 Tristan Ruhlman-Bloomington South #3 Robert Deters-Castle #6 Gabe Sollars-Evansville Mater Dei #9 Brach Carrington-Greencastle #15 Owen Sego-Indian Creek #18 Jalen Ward-Franklin Community Best First Round Match(es): NONE Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #3 Robert Deters-Castle vs #15 Owen Sego-Indian Creek #18 Jalen Ward-Franklin Community vs Noah Minor-Northview #2 Tristan Ruhlman-Bloomington South vs #9 Brach Carrington-Greencastle #6 Gabe Sollars-Evansville Mater Dei vs Van Skinner-Madison HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Jalen Ward-Franklin Community 182 Macartney Parkinson, Evansville Mater Dei, picked up a state medal last year but will be looking to win his first semi-state and head to Banker’s Life as a 1. The best first round match at this weight is the one between Terre Haute South’s Brendan McPike and 2018 state qualifier Brenden Moore. The winner of this match should have no issues in the ticket round. Parkinson will have a ranked match-up in the ticket round, but he should handle Greg Glover, Brownsburg as he heads to the semis. Columbus East’s Noah White comes in with 5 loses all to kids ranked ahead of him. He should win his half of the bracket on his way to the finals. Sophomore Drake Buchanan, Center Grove, has jump up 5 weight classes and has looked great this year. Buchanan should cruise into his semi-finals match with White, making his first trip downtown. I see Macartney getting his first semi-state title with a win over White in the finals, while McPike and Buchanan settle for 3rd and 4th respectively. 2019 Champ Carson Brewer-Avon Ranked Wrestlers: #2 Macartney Parkinson-Evansville Mater Dei #7 Noah White-Columbus North #11 Drake Buchanan-Center Grove #12 Brendan McPike-Terre Haute South #14 Brenden Moore-South Spencer #19 Greg Glover-Brownsburg Best First Round Match(es): #12 Brendan McPike-Terre Haute South vs #14 Brenden Moore-South Spencer Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #2 Macartney Parkinson-Evansville Mater Dei vs #19 Greg Glover-Brownsburg HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Phoenix Rodgers, Heritage Hills, comes in after losing regionals to 5th ranked McKinley Kemper, Evansville Central, but should still roll into the finals at this weight. Isaiah Street, Brownsburg, will have a tough ticket round match against Jeffersonville’s Cody Matherly. Street has wrestled tougher guys this year and I think it will show in this match. On the bottom side of the bracket is the favorite to win the weight in Kemper. I don’t see him having much of a match before the semis. There he should wrestle Franklin Community’s Harris Eason. Eason has had a great year this year and looks to continue it this weekend. Eason will have to settle for a possible 3rd place finish here. 2019 Champ Will Nunn-Castle Ranked Wrestlers: #5 McKinley Kemper-Evansville Central #6 Phoenix Rodgers-Heritage Hills #10 Isaiah Street-Brownsburg #12 Harris Eason-Franklin Community Best First Round Match(es): #6 Phoenix Rodgers-Heritage Hills vs Jacob Platt-Plainfield Best Ticket Round Match(es): Ashton Schuetter-Jasper vs Platt/Rodgers winner #10 Isaiah Street-Brownsburg vs Cody Matherly-Jeffersonville #12 Harris Eason-Franklin Community vs Matthew Archer-Edgewood HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Willman has looked great all year and will be looking to take his first trip to the bank. He will first have to beat the big freshman out of Brownsburg, Leighton Jones. Cordell Heuring is a favorite in his match even though he finished 4th at the regional a week ago. Returning state placer, Will Stewart of South Spencer, and returning state qualifier, Josh Howell of Terre Haute South, are set to meet in the ticket round. I am going with the returning state placer in this match. On the bottom side of the bracket a 1 loss Micah Dodson, Martinsville, will have a tough Macray Robinson, Gibson Southern, in the ticket round. Keys should find little competition this weekend regardless of the scores, I do not see anyone really threatening him this weekend. Bloomington North’s Race Stewart and Avon’s Ke’Tre Dickens meet first round this weekend. While Stewart is the favorite here don’t count out Dickens pulling off the upset here. Jeffersonville’s returning state qualifier Mark Munoz will have his hands full in the ticket round against Robert Gentry of Mooresville. Gentry is the last Indiana guy to beat Keys. In that bottom quarter bracket Franklin Community’s Jacob Johnson has been right there with the best kids in the state and has a chance here to make it to the bank as a sophomore. 106 Two returning state qualifiers will meet in the ticket round for another chance to qualify for the state tournament. Keegan Malott, East Noble, will meet Garrett’s Colton Weimer, who was a qualifier at 113 a year ago, for a chance at another trip to Indy. Malott’s ability on top is what I think gives him the edge here in this match. Freshman Tanner Tishner, Western, is the best guy at this weight in my opinion and he should pick up his first semi-state title this weekend. In the finals he will see the winner of Jay County’s Cody Rowles and Goshen senior Vincente Eckman. Eckman picked up a solid win last weekend over Malott but I’m going to go with the freshman in this matchup. 2019 Champ: Isaac Ruble-Bellmont Ranked Wrestlers: #10 Tanner Tishner-Western #13 Jalen May-Peru #14 Keegan Malott-East Noble #16 Colton Weimer-Garrett Best First Round Match(es): Gilbert Ruselink, Carrol(Fort Wayne) vs Jalen May, Peru Raef Keith, Cowan vs Keegan Malott, East Noble Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Vincente Eckman, Goshen vs Bryce Clark, Leo Tanner Tishner, Western vs Cayden Smithley, Norwell Colton Weimer, Garrett vs Keegan Malott, East Noble HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Keegan Malott-East Noble 113 Bellmont’s Isaac Ruble could find himself under the lights for the second year in a row next weekend. No one at this weight should really push him and he should capture his second semi-state title. In the semis, he should have Garrett’s Hayden Brady, who was a few seconds from making the podium a year ago. Wabash’s Jared Brooks comes in with 1 loss on the year and should have little trouble making it out . Brooks will likely see the freshman from Delta, Neal Mosier, in the ticket round. The last guy making it out here is Elliott Cornewell, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger. Cornewell dropped a close match to Brady a week ago. 2019 Champ: Trey Sturgill-Peru Ranked Wrestlers: #3 Isaac Ruble-Bellmont #4 Hayden Brady-Garrett #11 Anthony Martin-Western #17 Isaiah McCue-Angola #19 Jared Brooks-Wabash Best First Round Match(es): Beau Brabender, Northridge vs Anthony Martin, Western Sam Ford, Leo vs Neal Mosier, Delta Harvey Barr, Kokomo vs Blake Byerley, East Noble Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Elliott Cornewell, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger vs Martin/Brabender winner Hayden Brady, Garrett vs Ethan Holloway, Peru Jared Brooks, Wabash vs Mosier/Ford winner HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. The next best kid in the weight might be Western’s Aiden Belt, but Belt is on the same side as Sprague and should drop down to the 3rd place match. Tony Wood, Jay County, is having a great year this year and should continue that into the finals here at this weight. There’s a tough ticket round match between two seniors with Leo’s Jacob Veatch meeting Northridge’s Justin Puckett for a chance to go to the Bank. Puckett’s resume is why I give him the nod here. 2019 Champ: Dominic Heath-Churubusco Ranked Wrestlers: #6 Aidan Sprague-East Noble #14 Toby Wood-Jay County #16 Justin Puckett-Northridge #20 Jacob Veatch-Leo Best First Round Match(es): Mikey Kallimani, Jimtown vs Cole Sailors, Peru Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Jacob Veatch, Leo vs Justin Puckett, Northridge Aidan Sprague, East Noble vs Silas Loshe, South Adams Aiden Belt, Western vs Austin Lewis, Bluffton Tony Wood, Jay County vs Kallimani/Sailors winner HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Oak Hill’s Harper Dedman wrestles Brandon Kinnick, Daleville, which in my opinion is their ticket round match as the winner of this should win the next one. Dedman takes this match and continues his run another week. Another first round match to watch is between Wyatt Krejsa, Delta, and Cole Sailors, Peru, with the winner wrestling a very good Nick Olson, Goshen, for a chance to go. At the top of the bracket, you have another weight where the two best kids ended up on the same side of the bracket. Bluffton’s Landon Bertsch is a two-time state qualifier and comes in undefeated for another year. He should remain unbeaten and capture a title here. In the semis he will have another wrestler who has state experience in Wabash senior Ethan Higgins. Higgins has a tough match right away with Adams Central Logan Uhlman in the first round. 2019 Champ: Dylan Stroud-Manchester Ranked Wrestlers: #10 Landon Bertsch-Bluffton #11 Logan Uhlman-Adams Central #12 Ethan Higgins-Wabash #18 Brandon Kinnick-Daleville Best First Round Match(es): Ethan Higgins, Wabash vs Logan Uhlman, Adams Central Landon Bertsch, Bluffton vs Justin Brantley, Western Cooper Baldwin, Peru vs Wyatt Krejsa, Delta Harper Dedman, Oak Hill vs Brandon Kinnick, Daleville Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Nick Olson, Goshen vs Krejsa/Baldwin winner Noah Eberhart, Jimtown vs Landon Bertsch, Bluffton HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Fort Wayne Snider senior Reakus Shelton, 7th at 132 last year, will meet Manchester’s Dylan Stroud, 8th at 126. Looking at who each guys has wrestled this year you have to give Shelton the nod. The best guy at this weight, and maybe the state, is Leo’s Ian Heath. Heath brings in an undefeated record here and will leave that way. A good first round match at this weight is between Garrett’s Brayden Baker and Jay County’s Cameron Clark. I believe that the winner of this advances to state. Bellmont junior Dominic Litchfield and Wabash’s Anthony Long look to meet in the ticket round, where I see Litchfield making his first trip to the Bank. 2019 Champ: Ian Heath-Leo Ranked Wrestlers: #2 Ian Heath-Leo #16 Dylan Stroud-Manchester #17 Reakus Shelton-F.W. He finished 4th a year ago at the semi-state but I expect him to win it all this week. Arthur will have a tough Ben Miller, Lakeland, in the ticket round but Arthur should win there. In the semis he will see the winner of Delta’s Dillon Tuttle and Columbia City’s Jarret Forrester. Tuttle might be better l but with only 6 matches on the year it’s hard for me to pick him here. On the top half of the bracket, Northridge’s Logan Hooley is in a great spot to qualify for state. He will have a tough Peru kid, Alex Legg, but I see Hooley beating him. In the semis he should see Daleville junior Julius Gerencser. 2019 Champ: Elijah Chacon-New Haven Ranked Wrestlers: #15 Brody Arthur-Oak Hill #20 Logan Hooley-Northridge Best First Round Match(es): Elijah Burlingame, Manchester vs Jadyn Gilbert, Garrett Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Logan Hooley, Northridge vs Alex Legg, Peru Dillon Tuttle, Delta vs Jarrett Forrester, Columbia City Brody Arthur, Oak Hill vs Ben Miller, Lakeland HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. New Haven’s Elijah Chacon looks elite this year and should win this weight class. The four guys expected to make it out here will have 5 total losses. Western’s Hayden Shepherd is another guy returning with state expert corn and looks to make his second trip downtown. Cowan’s Toby Abbott looks to make history by becoming his school's first state qualifier. The last guy of this bunch is Sam Levitz, Prairie Heights. Hardcastle won this weight a year ago but will have a tough one right away with another state qualifier first round in South Adams, AJ Dull. In the semis he should wrestle Adams Central’s Alex Curri, who is a returning state placer. Hardcastle has beaten him when they’ve wrestled so I’m picking him here. On the top side, Evan Ulrick, Carroll(Fort Wayne), comes in with a spotless record and was wrestling at Bankers Life a year ago. He should make it into the finals here making it to state again, but will have a tough Tallan Morrisett, Eastern(Greentown), waiting for him in the ticket. 2019 Champ: Aidan Hardcastle-Oak Hill Ranked Wrestlers: #9 Aidan Hardcastle-Oak Hill #10 Alex Currie-Adams Central #12 Evan Ulrick-Carroll(Fort Wayne) #13 AJ Dull-South Adams Best First Round Match(es): Reed Brandenburg, Winchester vs Tallan Morrisett, Eastern(Greentown) Aidan Hardcastle, Oak Hill vs AJ Dull, South Adams Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Brenden Stockman, Concord vs Jonah Jones, Monroe Central Alex Currie, Adams Central vs Michael Tippmann, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger Evan Ulrick, Carroll(Fort Wayne) vs Brandenburg/Morrisett winner HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger’s Eli Hilger wrestles a tough Noah Swango, Rochester, in the first round. The winner wrestles the winner of another tough first round between Isaac Friedt, Bellmont and Kaden Lone, NorthWood. Bryce Buckley, Eastern(Greentown), wrestles Fort Wayne Snider’s Mehki Spencer. Regardless of who wins this match they meet Landon Buchanan, Jimtown, in the ticket round who I think wins this weight. Another guy to watch at this weight is Norwell’s Eli Johnson, who comes in with 1 loss this year. Johnson has a tough Ryan Sheets, Columbia City in the ticket round. 2019 Champ: Isiah Levitz-Prairie Heights Ranked Wrestlers: #9 Landon Buchanan-Jimtown #16 Kaden Lone-NorthWood #18 Eli Hilger-Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger #19 Bryce Buckley-Eastern(Greentown) Best First Round Match(es): Noah Swango, Rochester vs Eli Hilger, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger Isaac Friedt, Bellmont vs Kaden Lone, NorthWood Bryce Buckley, Eastern(Greentown) vs Mekhi Spencer, Fort Wayne Snider Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Hilger/Swango winner vs Friedt/Lone winner Austin Jones, Cowan vs Logan Farnell, Maconaquah Landon Buchanan, Jimtown vs Buckley/Spencer winner Ryan Sheets, Columbia City vs Eli Johnson, Norwell HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. I know the accomplishments of Brodie Porter, Eastern(Greentown), but Myers was expected to be really good coming in and he seems like he’s healthy now and if that’s the case he wins it here. Porter was a state qualifier a year ago and comes in with a perfect record as well. In the ticket round, two seniors in Elkhart’s Clayton Lundy and Fort Wayne Snider’s Jacob Kreager will meet for a chance to wrestle next weekend. Lundy qualified at this weight a year ago. Kainen Malone-Johnson, Marion, has a good shot to qualify with Fort Wayne South Side’s Matthew Morris likely to be his ticket round opponent. 2019 Champ: Clayton Fielden-Garrett Ranked Wrestlers: #6 Clayton Lundy-Elkhart #9 Brodie Porter-Eastern(Greentown) #20 Jacob Kreager-Fort Wayne Snider Best First Round Match(es): Matthew Morris, Fort Wayne South Side vs Trever Currie, Adams Central Alton Mullinax, Columbia City vs Lucas Fox, Delta Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Kainen Malone-Johnson, Marion vs Morris/Currie winner Duke Myers, Bellmont vs Kymani Howard, Kokomo Brodie Porter, Eastern(Greentown) vs Fox/Mullinax winner Clayton Lundy, Elkhart vs Jacob Kreager, Fort Wayne Snider HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Isaiah Brege, Norwell, brings in the only undefeated record at this weight and is the on paper favorite to win this weight. He will have a tough field in front of him to win this weight class. Andrew Lockwood, Northridge, has wrestled a much tougher schedule than a lot of the guys at this weight and that might be the difference here. A good ticket round match to watch is between Jacob Saylor, New Haven, and Christ in Summersett, South Adams. Adams might just be too much for him here. 2019 Champ: Jake Lone-NorthWood Ranked Wrestlers: #11 Christian Summersett-South Adams #12 Isaiah Brege-Norwell #13 Jacob Saylor-New Haven #15 Andrew Lockwood-Northridge Best First Round Match(es): Jett Thompson, Oak Hill vs Jackson ingenito, Daleville Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Andrew Lockwood, Northridge vs Hunter Page, Monroe Central Jacob Saylor, New Haven vs Christian Summersett, South Adams HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. He and the other state qualifier Ibrahim Khaoucha, Northridge, should make their second trip downtown. Blake Heyerly, Adams Central, comes in with the only undefeated record into this tournament and has to be right there in the conversation to win it here this weekend. The last kid to watch, and who I expect to make it out, is Fort Wayne Snider’s South Side Keaton Grider. Some ticket round matches to watch are between Lepper and Tim Hunter, Jimtown. Hunter has shown he can go with some of the best kids in the state. 2019 Champ: Kyler Funk-Mississinewa Ranked Wrestlers: #8 Matt Lepper-Carroll(Fort Wayne) #10 Blake Heyerly-Adams Central #13 Ibrahim Khaoucha-Northridge #18 Keaton Grider-Fort Wayne South Side Best First Round Match(es): Tim Hunter, Jimtown vs Matt Lepper, Carroll(Fort Wayne) Hunter Prahl, Leo vs Henry Kukelhan, Bellmont Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Blake Heyerly, Adams Central vs Jacob Behn, Fremont Ibrahim Khaoucha, Northridge vs Prahl/Kukelhan winner HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Bills is solid but not the most physically imposing guy at the weight and I think at this stage of the game it’s tough when you’re missing that part especially at 220. Freshman Julante Hinton has a great draw and should make the trip in his first year on the mat. RJ Dilbone, Fremont, has a tough sophomore who should be waiting for him in the ticket round in Fort Wayne Concordia’s Chance Harris. 2019 Champ: Cale Gray-Norwel Ranked Wrestlers: #11 Isaac Benjamin-NorthWood #14 Kyler Bills-Carroll(Fort Wayne) #17 Julante Hinton-Fort Wayne Northrop #18 Chance Harris-Fort Wayne Concordia Best First Round Match(es): Micah Higgins, Northfield vs Julante Hinton, Fort Wayne Northrop Brady Beck, Rochester vs Kyler Bills, Carroll(Fort Wayne) Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): RJ Dilbone, Fremont vs Chance Harris, Fort Wayne Concordia Coy Brames, Angola vs Beck/Bills winner HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. The two other guys that look to be favorited to make it out come in with 1 loss between the two of them. Brandon Villefuerte, Angola, has a tough ticket round match with New Haven’s Jon Louden, who only has 2 losses himself. 106 This weight is headlined by sophomore state qualifier, Isaac Ruble of Bellmont. He has 1 loss this year to the 2nd ranked kid in the state. In the top quarter bracket Western’s Anthony Martin and Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger’s Elliott Cornewell should hit in the ticket round. Based on common opponents I can see Cornewell coming away with the win here. In the next quarter bracket down there is a big first round match between Ruble and Oak Hill’s Peytonn Bowland. Both ranked in the state, but I look for Ruble to run away with this one. At the bottom of the bracket, Kokomo’s Harvey Barr, and Hayden Brady, Garrett, should hit in the ticket round. Brady has wrestled tougher competition this year and I think it will show on Saturday. 2019 Champ: Jared Brooks-Wabash Ranked Wrestlers: #4 Isaac Ruble-Bellmont #7 Hayden Brady-Garrett #10 Anthony Martin-Western #14 Harvey Barr-Kokomo #20 Peytonn Bowland-Oak Hill Best First Round Match(es): #4 Isaac Ruble vs #20 Peytonn Bowland Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #10 Anthony Martin-Western vs Elliott Cornwell-Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger #7 Hayden Brady-Garrett vs #14 Harvey Barr-Kokomo HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. He will have a tough Jarred Brooks, Wabash, waiting for him in the ticket round. Brooks has been ranked as high a 3rd this year. A big first round match-up at the bottom of the bracket is between Peru’s Trey Sturgill and Huntington North’s Brady Lewis. Sturgill, a 2018 state qualifier, is looking to make it back in his senior season. Another first round match to watch is at the bottom of the bracket where Garrett’s Colton Weimer, and Maconaquah’s Blake Kinney. Weimer should be the favorite here but be on the look out for an upset. I see Sprague taking this weight this weekend with a win over Sturgill who gets back to the bank. Brantley takes out Weimer for 3rd. 2019 Champ Preston Teusch-Huntington North Ranked Wrestlers: #10 Aidan Sprague-East Noble #12 Trey Sturgill-Peru #14 Blake Kinney-Maconaquah #15 Jared Brooks-Wabash #16 Justin Brantley-Western Best First Round Match(es): #16 Justin Brantley-Western vs Ben Sloffer-Carroll (Fort Wayne) #12 Trey Sturgill-Peru vs Brady Lewis-Huntington North Colton Weimer-Garrett vs Blake Kinney-Maconaquah Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Brantley/Sloffer Winner vs Ethan Reiley-Jay County #10 Aidan Sprague-East Noble vs #15 Jared Brooks HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Bots will have a tough ticket round match, facing the winner of Brady Ester, Fort Wayne Snider, and Brandon Kinnick, Daleville. Ester has wrestle some of the best kids in the state, which I see giving him a leg up this weekend. Ethan Higgins, Wabash, comes in with 1 loss and looks to make his first trip to the bank. He should see Jacob Veatch, Leo, in the ticket round. Higgins should win this match and become a state qualifier. Churubusco’s Dominic Heath should cruise to the semis in his section of the bracket. Delta’s John Robinson is the probably the best guy at the weight, but he also has the toughest ticket round match. Robinson should run into Northridge’s Justin Puckett in the ticket round. Both have been tested this year, but I view Robinson a bit better in this match up. In the semifinals here Robinson should beat Heath and Higgins should pick up another win over Ester. Robinson take the title this weekend, and Ester and Heath finish 3rd and 4th respectively. 2019 Champ Evan Beasley-Northridge Ranked Wrestlers: #10 John Robinson-Delta Best First Round Match(es): NONE Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Brady Ester-Fort Wayne Snider vs Jett Boots-Angola Ethan Higgins-Wabash vs Jacob Veatch-Leo #10 John Robinson-Delta vs Justin Puckett-Northridge HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Fort Wayne Snider’s Beau Humphrey will have a tough ticket round match-up, facing the winner of Chandler Ciscell, Western, and Jasper Graber, Northridge. Bluffton’s Landon Bertsch comes in undefeated, but will wrestled Oak Hill’s Harper Dedman, who took his first loss of the season last weekend. 2 kids with a combined 77-1 record, and one goes home. One the bottom side of the bracket, Manchester’s Dylan Stroud looks to continue his undefeated season and capture a semi-state title in the process. He will meet a tough Dominic Litchfield, Bellmont, in the ticket round but should roll past him into the semis. Delta’s Payne Blackburn is a state qualifier from 2018 and looks to make it back as a senior. Blackburn will first have to knock off another tough senior in Huntington North’s Darryn Kuhl. In the semis I see Stroud taking out Kuhl and Bertsch beating Humphrey setting up a match of undefeated wrestlers. I see Stroud handing Bertsch his first loss of the year. 2019 Champ Hunter Watts-Jimtown Ranked Wrestlers: #11 Harper Dedman-Oak Hill #12 Landon Bertsch-Bluffton #14 Beau Humphrey-Fort Wayne Snider #15 Payne Blackburn-Delta #16 Dylan Stroud-Manchester Best First Round Match(es): Chandler Ciscell-Western vs Jasper Graber-Northridge #12 Landon Bertsch-Bluffton vs Chandler Shearer-Garrett #15 Payne Blackburn vs Darryn Kuhl-Huntington North Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #14 Beau Humphrey-Fort Wayne Snider vs Ciscell/Graber winner #12 Landon Bertsch-Bluffton vs #11 Harper Dedman-Oak Hill HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Leo’s Ian Heath comes in as a returning state placer, looking to pick up his first semi-state title. His one loss on the year, however, came to another wrestler at this weight, Western’s Hunter Cottingham. Cottingham has made it downtown every year but has been unable to take home a medal. The biggest ticket round matches are at the top and bottom of the bracket. Rasheek Bonds, Goshen, will wrestle a tough Brody Arthur, Oak Hill, to get downtown. The second one is up top where Delta’s Dillion Tuttle and Fort Wayne Snider’s Reakus Shelton will meet. I see Bonds and Reakus picking up wins there over the underclassmen. In the semis Cottingham and Heath should do their part to set up a rematch. Heath wins the rematch here winning his first semi-state crown. 2019 Champ Matt Gimson-Jimtown Ranked Wrestlers: #8 Hunter Cottingham-Western #9 Ian Heath-Leo #16 Reakus Shelton-Fort Wayne Snider Best First Round Match(es): None Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Dillon Tuttle-Delta vs Reakus Shelton-Fort Wayne Snider Rasheek Bonds-Goshen vs Brody Arthur-Oak Hill HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. He should cruise into the semis where he should see New Haven junior Elijah Chagon. Chagon is tough to wrestle and has some good wins this year. With that being said, I do not see him knocking off Lawson in the semis. At the top of the bracket, Cowan’s Toby Abbott has a tough but winnable quarter bracket. He will first see Eastside’s Lane Burns. If he wins that one, he will wrestle the winner of Luke Hetzner, Eastern (Greentown), and Logan Hooley, Northridge. Up to is another tough quarter bracket. First round, Western’s Hayden Shepherd meets Prairie Height’s Sam Levitz. Shepherd should take this match, but do not count out Levitz. The winner here gets a tough senior from Fort Wayne Wayne, Josue Sotero. Shepherd may be a little too much for Sotero, so I see him punching his ticket back to the bank. In the semis, Shepherd picks up a win over Abbott before being stopped in the finals by Lawson. Chagon gets third beating Abbott as well. 2019 Champ Connor Gimson-Jimtown Ranked Wrestlers: #10 Kyle Lawson-Bellmont #13 Hayden Shepherd-Western #16 Elijah Chagon-New Haven Best First Round Match(es): #13 Hayden Shepherd-Western vs Sam Levitz-Prairie Heights Logan Hooley-Northridge vs Luke Hetzner-Eastern (Greentown) Lane Burns-Eastside vs Toby Abbott-Cowan Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #13 Hayden Shepherd vs Josue Sotero-Fort Wayne Wayne Hooley/Hetzner winner vs Burns/Abbott winner HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Starting up top, freshman Kaden Lone, NorthWood, has a chance to punch his ticket in his first high school season. He will see a tough senior in Alex Currie, Adams Central, who looks to get downtown in his final season. Columbia City’s Ryan Sheets should take care of business and get downtown, but must beat a good AJ Dull, South Adams. The most interesting ticket round match in this weight is on the bottom side of this bracket. Tallan Morrisett, Eastern (Greentown), and Evan Ulrick, Carroll (Fort Wayne), are two of the best kids in the state but only one will make it out. Even with 10 loses I feel Ulrick has seen better kids this year and that will be the difference here. Southern Wells’s William Fiechter was 15 seconds from becoming a state placer a year ago. Jimtown’s Landon Buchanan looks to stop him from getting there this year. Neither kid has any bad loses, so this should be a good match. I going to lean on the side of the senior in this match. From there Fiechter and Lone handle business in the semis, meeting in the finals, where Fiechter come out on top. Sheets picks up a win over Ulrick in the 3rd place match. 2019 Champ Logan Macklin-Adams Central Ranked Wrestlers: #5 William Fiechter-Southern Wells Best First Round Match(es): NONE Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Kaden Lone-NorthWood vs Alex Currie-Adam Central Tallan Morrisett-Eastern (Greentown) vs Evan Ulrick-Carroll (Fort Wayne) #5 William Fiechter-Southern Wells vs Landon Buchanan-Jimtown HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. Tri-Central’s Ethan Mason is having a great this year and set himself up to make it to the bank by winning the regional a week ago. Norwell’s Gage Schuckman could derail that though. On the bottom side of the bracket, I think the match between Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger’s Eli Hilger and Maconaquah’s Aaron Mckinley is the ticket round match in that quarter bracket. The winner here should make it into the semis. At the bottom, 2019 state qualifier, Scottie Saylor of Carroll (Fort Wayne), has been having a very up and down year. I don’t see him beating Aidan Hardcastle, Oak Hill, in the first round, ending his season. The big ticket round match here will be between Hardcastle and Josh Beeks, Goshen. I look for Hardcastle to take out another senior and punches his ticket. McCune and Hardcastle win in the semis, before McCune wins in the finals. Mason finishes his tournament with a win and a 3rd place finish. 2019 Champ Ethan Hicks-Carroll (Fort Wayne) Ranked Wrestlers: #11 Cody McCune-Huntington North #15 Eli Hilger-Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger #16 Josh Beeks-Southern Wells Best First Round Match(es): Aidan Hardcastle-Oak Hill vs Scottie Saylor-Carroll (Fort Wayne) #15 Eli Hilger-Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger vs Aaron Mckinley-Maconaquah Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): Ethan Mason-Tri-Central vs Gage Schuckman-Norwell Hilger/Mckinley winner vs Oliver Eveler-Northridge #16 Josh Beeks-Goshen vs Saylor/Hardcastle winner HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. The top side of the bracket will have Isaiah Levitz, Prairie Heights, and Jed Perry, Southern Wells, meeting in the ticket round. I don’t see anyone in their path that can derail them. On the bottom side of the bracket I feel the same way, but those guys have tougher ticket round matches. Elkhart Memorial’s Kamden Goering will wrestle Columbia City’s Jackson Pettigrew in the ticket round. Goering is tough but I don’t see him beating the returning state qualifier. At the bottom of the bracket is the most interesting ticket round match. Undefeated Tytus Morrisett, Eastern (Greentown), and Jacob Werts, Jimtown, should meet in the ticket round. Werts has better wins on the year, but regardless of who you wrestle its tough to stay unbeaten. Morrisett was on the end of an upset a year ago. I don’t see him suffering that same fate here. In the semis, I look for the rankings to hold and for Levitz to meet Pettigrew in the finals. Levitz takes this weight, while Morrissett finishes 3rd. 2019 Champ Jon Ruble-Bellmont Ranked Wrestlers: #2 Isiah Levitz-Prairie Heights #5 Jackson Pettigrew #12 Jed Perry-Southern Wells #15 Tytus Morrisett-Eastern (Greentown) #17 Jacob Werts-Jimtown #20 Kamden Goering-Elkhart Memorial Best First Round Match(es): NONE Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #5 Jackson Pettigrew-Columbia City vs Kamden Goering-Elkhart Memorial #15 Tytus Morrisett-Eastern (Greentown) vs #17 Jacob Werts-Jimtown HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. The 2019 runner-up should have little trouble with this field, and I look for him to run away with it here. On the bottom half of the bracket are two good potential ticket round matches. The first being between Matthew Morris, Fort Wayne South Side, and Brodie Porter, Eastern (Greentown). Porter comes in with 1 loss, looking to make his first trip downtown. At the bottom of the bracket is the best ticket round match. Elkhart Memorial’s Clayton Lundy will run into returning state qualifier, Joe Parrish of Homestead. Lundy comes up short here and Parrish make it back downtown. In the semis the guys who have been there keep winning, setting up a match between Fielden and Parrish in the finals. Fielden wins this weight like he did a week ago, while Jacob Duncan. Winner should cruise into the finals, after picking up a win over Peru’s Zion Constable in the semis. At the top of the bracket Jake Lone, NorthWood, looks to get downtown for the 3rd straight year and should have little trouble doing so. Lone Should meet Winner in the finals after beating Norwell’s Sam Walker in the semifinals. Sophomore Blake Heyerly, Adams Central, is probably the 4th best kid in the weight, but has Lone waiting for him in the ticket round. Friedt has a tough Ashton Moore, Jasper, in the ticket round but he should get past him. Matt Leeper, Carroll (Fort Wayne), really showed up this year and has put himself in a great spot to make it downtown. NorthWood’s Jaden Miller has had a good season as well this year and I look for their ticket round match to be close, but I think Leeper is a bad match-up for Miller. Kyler Funk, Mississinewa, is a 2018 state qualifier, and looks to get back this year. He will wrestle a tough Tyson Enis, Yorktown, in the ticket round. Funk has been here before and I look for him to get back to the bank. Ibrahim Khaoucha, Northridge, and Christian Summersett, South Adams. Khaoucha was an Al Smith runner-up and has seen much tough competition throughout the year. That will be the difference in this match. In the semis I see Friedt beating Leeper, who finishes 3rd. Returning placer Cale Gray, Norwell, and Fred Durben, Oak Hill come in a combined 68-0. Cale Gray is the heavy favorite here and even with this tough field he should roll to his first semi-state title. A big ticket round match at this weight is between Gray, returning state qualifier Reece Wicker, Churubusco. Wicker took his first loss last weekend at the regional to Tristan Martz, New Haven. Martz should make the finals with his draw. He will have to get past Durben in the semis to do so. At the top of the bracket, Sea Davis of Elkhart Central, Keegan Miller of Eastside, and Grant Warmuth, Wabash are all about the same level so it will just come down to who shows up Saturday. Swallow will first have to beat Rhent Addis, Northridge, and in the ticket round he has a tough senior in Manchester’s Bryce Kamphues. I am leaning towards the guy that has won in the ticket round before. In the other 3 quarter brackets, the other three regional champs should all make it out. Last Year I picked Reeve Muncie, Carroll (Fort Wayne), to make it out and that didn’t happen. I am picking him again but this heavyweight so anything can happen, and a lot of these matches will be super close. Jose Rosales, Goshen, and Braydon Erb, Western, are the other 2 semi-finalists. In the semis, Erb beats Muncie sending him to the 3rd place match, and Swallow stays unbeaten on his way to the finals. In the finals Erb hands Swallow his first loss on the year, and Muncie finishes his weekend with a win. 2019 Champ Holden Parsons-Yorktown Ranked Wrestlers: #3 Logan Swallow-Monroe Central #6 Reeve Muncie-Carroll (Fort Wayne) #12 Braydon Erb-Western #19 Bryce Kamphues-Manchester Best First Round Match(es): NONE Best (Possible) Ticket Round Match(es): #3 Logan Swallow-Monroe Central vs Bryce Kamphues-Manchester HOOSIERMAT TOP 4: 1. - BLUBAUGH NAMED ARC W.O.W.
ARTICLES BLUBAUGH NAMED ARC W.O.W. INDIANAPOLIS- For the third week in a row, a UIndy wrestler has earned the Great Lakes Valley Conference Wrestler of the Week, announced by the league office Tuesday. Blubaugh, a redshirt freshman, improved to 6-2 on the week with a 3-0 weekend at Lake Erie's Storm Duals. He put up a pair of tech falls, and a win over #10 Chris Droege of Lake Erie on Saturday in helping the #T7 Greyhounds to a 3-0 day. The Bloomington, Ind., native posted a 17-2 tech fall in 5:00 over Ashland's Nathan Williams in his first match of the day, and followed with a 7-2 win. Blubaugh then closed out his day with a 17-0 tech fall in 3:56 over Crue Cooper of Davenport. The last three weeks have produced three GLVC Wrestlers of the Week for UIndy. Last week #7 Andrew Sams earned the honor after topping #2 Josh Jones of McKendree, with #6 Jack Eiteljorge earning the award two weeks ago with a pair of region wins. The Greyhounds close out the GLVC season this weekend with a pair of duals at Maryville Saturday. UIndy will take on #4 Lindenwood at 3 p.m. EST, and the host Saints following that dual. All action can be watched live on the GLVC Sports Network.
