- Brayden Lowery
Wrestler of the Week 2018-2019 Season Brayden Lowery Roncalli By Sam Gobeyn You normally wrestle at 120, but in your dual against Cathedral you decided to wrestle up against Lukasz Walendzak who is one of the best 126’s in the state. Talk about what led to that decision and how excited you were for that matchup. We figured our 126 Sam Slivka could make 120 and beat their 120 and that it would be better for the team if I wrestled up. I was really excited because I knew he was one of the best kids at 126. You have been very dominant so far this season, but at one point during that match you were down 6-0. Talk about what was going through your head at that point in the match and how you kept your composure in order to come out with the win. My coaches have always said to keep my head in it and not let my head go rogue if I am losing and that is pretty much what I did. You have a lot of experience in the state tournament, placing 3rd and 5th the last two years and winning the New Castle semi-state both years. Talk about what you have done in the offseason and the beginning of this season to make sure that you end this season on top of the podium. I tried to go to every tournament that I could and train at as many different places as I could so I could see as many good kids as possible. You’re not the only guy on your team with state title aspirations. Talk about how it is being on a team with so many other great guys and how much more fun that makes the whole process. It is a lot of fun because you are doing it for the guy next to you just as much as the you are for yourself. That’s one reason I really like duals, because we are doing it for each other. We all compete really hard in practice which makes the practices really tough but it makes us a lot better at the same time. Anyone you want to thank? My coaches and my parents. BACK

- Freshman Of The Year 2021 | Hoosiermat
Freshman of the Year 2021 1/2 Brady Ison Brownsburg Description: This award goes to the best freshman wrestler in the state. Breakdown: This year’s freshman class was another great one. While this class did produce any state champs, it was a good class all aorund with several guys making the semis in the their first year on the mat. This award was somewhat tough to give out since there was no freshman in the finals this year but I felt that Brownsburg's Brady Ison was the best freshman this year. He placed 3rd at state that year with his only loses coming to the champ and runner-up. Ison also had 3 wins over the runner-up this year as well. Notable Wins: Cheaney Schoeff x3 Nick Olson Sam Goin Dason Tichenor Cash Turner Elijah Anthony Jacob Bechert Runner-up: Kyrel Leavell, Warren Central 3rd place: Hunter May, Floyd Central BACK

- Jesse Mendez
Wrestler of the Week 2018-2019 Season Jesse Mendez Crown Point By Sam Gobeyn This past weekend Jesse Mendez put the state on notice, winning the Al Smith at 126 pounds. On his way to the title he defeated 6th ranked Logan Wagner by a score of 16-1 in the semi-finals. Then, in the finals, he defeated previously first ranked and returning state champion Hunter Watts in a decisive 5-2 match. Despite being a freshman, he has now made himself the clear favorite at this weight class as we get closer to the postseason. We caught up with him, below, to talk about his big weekend. You were one of the best middle schoolers in the country last year, winning a lot of national tournaments, but this is your first high school season. Has it been an adjustment for you at all? There weren’t too many major adjustments. I just had to adjust to more consistent practices and wrestling bigger guys. The Al Smith is regarded by many people to be the toughest tournament in Indiana other than the state tournament. What were your expectations going into the tournament and what if anything surprised you? It was a lot tougher than I expected it to be, there is a lot depth at that tournament. I had returning placer Logan Wagner in the semi’s and then I had returning state champion Hunter Watts in the finals. Your weight at Al Smith was probably the toughest in my opinion, and you won pretty dominantly including a controlled 5-2 victory over Hunter Watts in probably the most anticipated match of the year so far. Tell us how you have that poise already as a freshman? I have been having big matches basically my entire life. Ever since I was seven, my family has traveled the country to try to seek out the best competetion and that has prepared me for these big moments. What are your goals for the rest of the season and beyond? My goals for this season are to be at the top of the podium at state and do it in the most dominant fashion possible. I also want to win flo nationals, cadet world team trials and cadet worlds and then hopefully get to go to whose number one and get that top spot in the country. What do you like to do outside of wrestling? I like to go watch my sister play softball and go see movies. Is there anyone you want to thank? I would like to thank my wrestling partners that push me to get better every day, my coaches for helping me improve so far this year and my family for sacrificing so much to help me get to this point. - Match Of The Year 2021 | Hoosiermat
Match of The Year 2021 1/4 Brody Baumann (Evansville Mater Dei) vs Robert Major (Carmel) Breakdown: This award goes out to what we view as the most exciting, back and forth match of the state tournament. Description: The winner of this is a no-brainer, in my opinion, with Brody Baumann and Robert Major lighting up the scorebard in a great match under the lights. You don't see a whole lot of spladles or double over throws in the state finals, and this match provided us with both along with seven reverals and three sets of near fall. The first period was dominated by Baumann, who scored two takedowns and a rideout. In the second, Baumann scores an early reveral only to be reveresed by Major, who then turns Baumann for a two count, before scoring a reversal of his own. The thrid period was crazy as well with both wrestlers scroing back to back reversals before Major hits a spladle for 2-and-2 to take the lead ith 16 seconds left in the match. This gave Major the 11-10 lead with 16 seconds left, then Baumann bombs him to his back with double overs for 5, securing the state title with a 15-11 win. Runner-up: Jesse Mendez vs Blake Boarman , IHSAA State Finals | 138 3rd Place: Tristan Vaughn vs Dillon Graham , IHSAA State Finals | 120 BACK

- Cooper Noehre
Wrestler of the Week 2018-2019 Season Cooper Noehre Greenfield-Central By: Sam Gobeyn You would be hard pressed to find a better week of wrestling than the week Cooper Noehre had last week. Last week Cooper was ranked #15 at 152 and was slated to wrestle 3 wrestlers ranked in the top 3 of their respective weight classes. Not many people would have expected what happened next. It started off with a weeknight dual against Warren Central where he wrestled the #1 ranked 145 pound wrestler in the state Antuan Graves, who had defeated Cooper 3 times last season. Cooper won that match in impressive fashion with an 11-4 decision. Then on Saturday Cooper wrestled previously 2nd ranked Jake Schoenegge of Columbus East, winning by a score of 5-2. Then, to finish off his incredible week, he defeated previously 3rd ranked Sammy Fair of Perry Meridian on the strength of an overtime takedown. He has now shot up to #3 in our 152 pound rankings. We caught up with Cooper below to talk about his big week. Probably not a lot of people expected you to do what you did last week. Talk about what your mindset was going into the week and how you were able to have the confidence to do what you did: My mindset is that I know that I can hang with anyone in the state. My coaches always tell me before the match to just be myself, so I just try to wrestle free and do what I do. You had a solid season last year, but you have definitely taken it up a notch so far this season. Tell us about what you did this offseason to make these improvements: I trained with the best guys in the state at CIA. I also went to some of the toughest tournaments in the country and wrestled some really good guys. Is there any event coming up this season that you are looking forward to in particular: I am looking forward to the state series to show what I have been working on for the past few years. What are your goals for the rest of the season: State champ. What do you like to do outside of wrestling: I like hanging out with my friends, and drinking water. Is there anyone you want to thank: I want to thank my coaches, parents and training partners. BACK
