ARTICLES LYDY BIG TEN W.O.W. WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After taking home the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational 174-pound title Saturday, Purdue senior Dylan Lydy kept adding awards being named Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday by the conference office. Lydy knocked off four straight ranked wrestlers on his way to the top of the podium and remains undefeated at 14-0 this season, earning his second weekly conference honor of 2019. After opening his tournament with a 15-5 major decision over Michigan's Max Maylor, Lydy went a full 11 minutes with Utah Valley's Kimball Bastian, earning an escape and a takedown in the final tie-break period to secure a 5-3 win, and defeating Bastian for the second time this season. Lydy followed up with a 5-3 decision over Oklahoma's Anthony Mantanona, scoring takedowns in the second and third periods in the quarterfinal win before needing overtime to earn his wins in the semifinals and finals. Lydy took down No. 5 Michael Labriola of Nebraska in the semifinals, scoring a 3-1 win with a sudden-victory takedown, and then repeated the feat with an overtime takedown against No. 4 Bryce Steiert of Northern Iowa. With 11 takedowns in the tournament Lydy climbed to 18th all-time at Purdue in the category, passing Colton Salazar and Luke Welch. He also pushed his career-win total to 94, good for a tie for 18th in program history with Eric Douglas and now six wins shy of becoming the 17th wrestler in school history to secure 100 career wins. The Boilermakers have now earned three Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors in 2019, with Lydy earning two and freshman Kendall Coleman sharing the award in the first week of the season.

  • Logan Hart

Wrestler of the Week 2018-2019 Season Logan Hart Carmel By: Sam Gobeyn Logan Hart, currently ranked #13 at 170, had a solid season last year, going 31-4 and losing in the ticket round. However, this weekend he shocked the state with an undefeated weekend at the Shamrock duals at Westfield, highlighted by a dominant 11-4 victory at 182 pounds over #1 ranked Elijah Mahan (Roncalli). We caught up with him below to talk about his weekend. Logan you had a very good season last year, but after watching this weekend you have obviously a lot of improvements. Talk to us about what you did this offseason to improve your wrestling? This offseason I tried to wrestle as many matches as I could either with Indiana Elite or with my high school team. Training wise I did Carmel USA wrestling club a couple times a week. I also attended a couple college camps and got to train with some college guys. What was your frame of mind going into a big match like that where you’re the underdog? I went in admittedly kind of nervous and not knowing what to expect, especially with a guy like that with a lot of funk. But, I knew that in order to have my best chance of winning I just had to be aggressive and do what I have been trained to do. During the match, not much was going through my head. I just kept repeating to myself “keep going Logan, keep going Logan”, even when we were out of bounds or other breaks during the match. After the match I was kind of in shock, and just really thankful for the opportunity and for my supporters. That kind of segways into my next question. Before a match, especially a big one like that, do you have a specific game plan? Usually my game plan before the match is just to stay in solid position and feel out my opponent. In previous years I would be a little overaggressive and get in some bad positions. Now I more so try to stay calm and let the match come to me, and then I can really start to attack. What are your goals for the remainder of the season and is there any event you are specifically looking forward too? I’m really looking forward to keeping the momentum from this weekend going. It’s still really early in the season, so I’m excited to get back in the room training hard and improving. I’m definitely looking forward to team state because that will be a first for me. I know that will be a good opportunity for our team and myself to see some great competition. Also, I am really looking forward to the State tournament to show people what I am capable of. What are some of your hobbies outside of wrestling? I really like to lift outside of school. I have done some lifting with some former powerlifters and I really enjoy that they are some cool guys. I also like hanging out with my team outside of wrestling, and I also really enjoy cooking. Anybody you want to thank? I definitely want to thank our new coaches. It’s been a really smooth transition and we have really bonded well together. They were the ones that made the decision for me to wrestle up against Mahan which meant a lot to me because it showed that they believed in me. I’m also really thankful for my team for training hard with me and pushing me to be better. BACK

  • HILDEBRANDT USA WRESTLING A.O.W.

ARTICLES HILDEBRANDT USA WRESTLING A.O.W. Sarah Hildebrandt (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC/USOPTC) has been selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on Jan. 21, 2020. 2018 World silver medalist at 53 kg Hildebrandt debuted at a brand new weight, 50 kg, and won her bracket last weekend at the Matteo Pellicone International, a UWW Ranking Series event held in Rome, Italy. To open her tournament, Hildebrandt took only 1:33 to pin Ana Maria Torres Rubio of Spain. In the second round, she met up with fellow Team USA athlete Victoria Anthony, who has two fifth-place finishes at the World Championships. Hildebrandt came out on top in a 7-5 decision. In the semifinals, Hildebrandt surpassed three-time Commonwealth champion Devi Nirmala from India with an 8-2 decision. Awaiting Hildebrandt in the finals was 2017 and 2019 World silver medalist Alina Vuc from Romania. Hildebrandt scored first, drawing a passivity point from Vuc to lead 1-0 at the break. In the second period, Hildebrandt went on the shot clock, but Vuc was able to pick up a takedown on the edge. With about 13 seconds left, a scramble ensued with Hildebrandt trailing 2-1. The American got behind Vuc and had her in a quad pod as the clock ticked down. With two seconds left, Hildebrandt flattened Vuc on the mat to take an eventual 4-2 win.

By Jeremy Haskett 106 This weight features 4 ranked wrestlers, one being the freshman hammer Bellmont’s Isaac Ruble. Central Noble’s Alex Ocampo comes in with a perfect 15-0 record and can’t be counted out to take home the title here. Aiden Sprague, East Noble, and Brady Lewis, Huntington, will meet for the 3rd time in the ticket round, having split the first 2 matches. 2018 Champ Fernando Flores Ranked Wrestlers: #9 Isaac Ruble-Bellmont #16 Alex Ocampo-Central Noble #17 Brady Lewis-Huntington North #18 Aidan Sprague-East Noble HOOSIERMAT TOP 4 Lewis, Ruble, Ocampo, Brooks 113 This weight is wide open. Preston Teusch is given the slight nod here, but there are several wrestlers in the field that could prevent him from winning. Senior Isaac Weimer, West Noble, has 1 loss freshman Landon Bertch, Bluffton, in ticket round. I like Weimer’s experience in this matchup. Jett Boots, Angola, has beaten a lot of good guys in the last 12 months, and will look to put it together to earn a state berth this weekend. Justin Puckett, Northridge, and Western's Justin Brantley, will battle it out for a shot at Teusch in the ticket round. 2018 Champ Brayden Curtis Ranked Wrestlers: #16 Preston Teusch-Huntington North #17 Isaac Weimer-West Noble HOOSIERMAT TOP 4 Ester, Teusch, Weimer, Boots 120 Northridge senior Evan Beasley is the favorite at this weight and has the wins to make you doubt the field. He will have a tough ticket round matchup against the winner of Toby Abbott, Cowan, and Chandler Shearer, Garrett. Senior state qualifier Kade Zadylak comes in with 1 loss and will look to make his second trip downtown. There are two big ticket round matchups to watch for. The first being Ethan Higgins, Wabash, against Beau Humphrey, Fort Wayne Snider. The second one is Aidan Hardcastle, Oak Hill, and John Robinson, Delta. 2018 Champ Hunter Watts Ranked Wrestlers: #9 Evan Beasley-Northridge #17 Kade Zadylak-Norwell HOOSIERMAT TOP 4 Higgins, Zadylak, Robinson, Beasley 126 This weight features two defending state champions. Yorktown’s Brayden Curtis has been tested this year but remains unbeaten. Jimtown’s Hunter Watts comes in with 1 blemish on his record, coming from top ranked Jesse Mendez. I do not see anyone stopping this matchup from happening on Saturday. Returning state qualifier has the unfortunate draw of having Watts in his ticket round match. Leo’s Ian Heath should make his second trip in two years to the state finals, but don’t count out the freshman from Adams Central, Alex Currie. 2018 Champ Christian Mejia Ranked Wrestlers: #2 Hunter Watts-Jimtown #3 Brayden Curtis-Yorktown #13 Ian Heath-Leo #18 Payne Blackburn-Delta HOOSIERMAT TOP 4 Watts, Curtis, Heath, Shepherd 132 Undefeated, returning state placer Matt Gibson is the favorite way this weight, but two other retuning state qualifiers will be looking to come away with the title this weekend. Chris Schuller will be looking to make his seconds trip downtown, but has a tough, undefeated senior in his way in Owen Krissy, Carroll(Fort Wayne). Returning state qualifiers Hunter Cottingham, Western, and Ricky Haught, Huntington North should meet in the ticket round. Adam Central’s Logan Mosser is looking to make his downtown for a second time. 2018 Champ Alex Barr Ranked Wrestlers: #3 Matt Gimson-Jimtown #15 Chris Schuller-Central Noble #17 Logan Mosser-Adams Central #19 Owen Krider-Carroll(Fort Wayne) #20 Elijah Chacon-New Haven HOOSIERMAT TOP 4 Gimson, Schuller, Mosser, Cottingham 138 Returning state placer, and defending semi-state champ, Connor Gimson headlines this weight class. The biggest early match at this weight is between returning state qualifier Dylan Goudy, Western, and returning Michigan state placewinner Nick Buchanan, Prairie Heights. A big first round matchup is between Goshen’s Braxton Rodriguez and Southern Well’s William Fiechter. Senior Reid Schrock will likely meet returning state qualifier Tanner Schoeff in a ticket round matchup of seniors looking to punch their ticket. 2018 Champ Connor Gimson Ranked Wrestlers: #2 Connor Gimson-Jimtown #9 Nick Buchanan-Prairie Heights #10 Tanner Schoeff-Central Noble #15 Dylan Goudy-Western #19 William Fiechter-Southern Wells HOOSIERMAT TOP 4 Buchanan, Gimson, Schoeff, Fiechter 145 No one at this weight jumps out to you as a runaway favorite. Homestead’s Jake Jenkins has the best wins of anyone in the bunch and is the on paper favorite to win the tournament. Prairie Heights senior Ryan Rasler looks to make the most out of his senior season with a trip downtown. State qualifier Logan Macklin, Adams Central, looks to make another trip downtown, but he will have to get by a tough Adam Hooley, Northridge, to do so. 2018 Champ Christian Hunt Ranked Wrestlers: #11 Jake Jenkins -Homestead #12 Ryan Rasler-Prairie Heights #14 Logan Macklin-Adams Central #20 Aaron McKinley-Maconaquah HOOSIERMAT TOP 4 Jenkins, Rasler, Macklin, Morrisett 152 Eric Hiestand has won semi-state the last 2 years and is looking to keep the streak going. Belmont’s Jon Ruble and Columbia City’s Jackson Pettigrew are the favorites to meet in the finals and take home the title here. The biggest ticket round matchup in this weight will be between Drew Sailors, Rochester, and Jed Perry, Southern Wells, both looking to break through after coming up short last year. 2018 Champ Mason Winner Ranked Wrestlers: #6 Jon Ruble-Bellmont #7 Jackson Pettigrew-Columbia City #15 Jed Perry-Southern Wells #20 Drew Sailors-Rochester HOOSIERMAT TOP 4 Ruble, Pettigrew, Sailors, Lundy 170 Clayton Fielden, Garrett, is the favorite at this weight that features one returning state qualifier, Manchester’s Delton Moore. 2020 Champ: Cathedral Scoring (without bonus): 1st....20 2nd...16 3rd....11 4th.....9 5th.....6 6th.....4 7th.....2 8th.....1 Teams in the Race: Cathedral Evan Dickey-1st-20 points Dillon Graham-4th-9 points Zeke Seltzer-1st-20 points Andrew Wilson-3rd-11 points Ulrik Urasy-6th-4 points Johnny Parker-4th-9 points Projected Total: 73 points What needs to happen: First thing that has to happen for the Fighting Irish is winning that big Friday night match at 195. If Parker loses there then their chances for a 4-peat are all but over. They will also need to rack up some bonus point wins since a lot of their guys don’t have a great chance of placing higher than predicted, so there’s not a lot of points left on the table. They also need help from the field and with Evansville Mater Dei having such tough draws they could get it. Chesterton Hayden DeMarco-3rd-11 points Sergio Lemley-1st-20 points Aidan Torres-6th-4 points Ethan Kaiser-7th-2 points Brock Ellis-5th-6 points Gavin Layman-5th-6 points Evan Bates-1st-20 points Projected Total: 69 points What needs to happen: Chesterton have the most placers when it's all said and done but with most of them getting 5th or lower it’s going to be hard for them to get enough points to take the title. The good thing for them there’s a lot of points they can steal. Gage DeMarco plays a big role in their team title hunt. If he can win Friday night, Chesterton gains another 11, DeMarco getting 4th, which will put them right around the top. They can also get a bunch if Aidan Torres can beat Alec Freeman Saturday morning. The last match where they can really bolster their title hopes is at 182 where If Layman can beat Drake Buchanan then he should make the finals. Crown Point Anthony Bahl-5th-6 points Logan Frazier-2nd 16 points Sam Goin-5th-6 points Stephen Roberson-2nd-16 points Jesse Mendez-1st-20 points Javen Estrada-6th-4 points Orlando Cruz-4th-9 points Projected Total: 77 points What needs to happen: Crown Point coming into the postseason season was an on pier favorite to win it all here. With the loss of Cody Goodwin and Seth Willem at the regional it will be much tougher for the Bulldogs to capture a title this season. Crown Point has 4 big matches Saturday morning where they could go 4-0 and be towards the top or 0-4 and be out of the race after the quarters. Those matches at 126, 132, 152, and 160 are big if they want a chance here because if all those guys slide then they will most likely be eliminated from the team race. Evansville Mater Dei Evan Seng-5th-6 points Cole Ross-5th-6 points Alec Freeman-1st-20 points Blake Boarman-3rd-11 points Brody Baumann-2nd-16 points Gabe Sollars-3rd-11 points Projected Total: 70 points What needs to happen: The draws for the Wildcats are absolutely brutal. Reed Egli would’ve been a point scorer for them but with the injury to Cottey last weekend he will most likely be eliminated Friday night. Cole Ross draws into Lemley, which most likely drops him down to 5th. Boarman drawing into Jesse Mendez in the semis all but limits him to 3rd place this weekend. The match Evan Seng has with Toby Billerman is huge for their title hopes. Saturday morning Even if Baumann and Sollars both win titles, I am not sure it will be enough for them if Seng doesn’t win Saturday morning. Perry Meridian Toby Billerman-2nd-16 points Alex Cottey-1st-20 points Brady McKivitz-4th-9 points Matthew Koontz-1st-20 points JaJaun Dale-4th-9 points Aiden Warren-1st-20 points Jeff McClure-4th-9 points Projected Total: 103 points What needs to happen: This tournament is Perry’s to lose. They have a bunch of winnable matches and don't need any crazy upsets really to take home the title. The biggest match for them is at 145, while it is only 9 potential points, you never know how close this race could be. Another big one is JaJaun Dale. He is the on paper favorite here but matches aren’t wrestled on paper. The same goes for Jeff McClure who could possibly make the finals or finish 8th. The only thing bad about being predicted to score as many points as the Falcons are is that there isn’t any room for them to score a whole lot more, but there is a chance for them to lose a bunch of points, especially Saturday morning. If they wrestle the first 2 rounds this weekend like they did last weekend the tournament will be over heading into the finals. Hoosiermat Top 5: 1. Perry Meridian 2. Crown Point 3. Cathedral 4. While Manchester does have hammers I don't think that will be enough to carry them here. Having good big guys goes a long way in every class but especially here. Christian Summerset, South Adams, is a ranked guy at 182 and can wrestle 195 and get results as well giving them some flexibility. South Adams advance Wabash vs Centerville If Centerville has a full line-up they should be able to advance in this match. The Bulldogs match-up well with Wabash and are good from 113-132 preventing Wabash from being able to bump around to get more favorable match-ups. Wabash has been giving up a lot of forfeits their past few times out and if that happens I don’t see a scenario where Wabash wins this dual. Centerville Advances Southmont vs Adams Central Adams Central matches up well against Southmont. Adams Central has solid kids where Southmont is bad and it should be a good bonus point opportunity for the Jets. Southmont does have solid big guys but the match-ups aren’t in their favor as I feel like Adam Centrals' guys are just a bit better in the toss up matches. Adams Central Advances Bluffton vs Rensselaer Central Bluffton has been without their best wrestler up to this point in the year. Rensselaer lost their best wrestler from last year, but picked up a good freshman to replace him. Bluffton has been wrestling well but I feel that Rensselaer’s line-up is too good from top to bottom and they come out with a win here. Rensselaer Central Advances Second Round Tell City vs South Adams Tell City is the top seed here for a reason. They have the deepest team in my opinion from top to bottom, returning 8 semi-state level guys from last year's team. Their good guys are spaced out enough for them to get favorable matchups in most duals. Matches to watch in this dual should be at 120 and 152. Tell City advances Prairie Heights vs Centerville This is my first “upset” of the tournament. Centerville brought back 5 semi-state level guys compared to two for Prairie Heights, in a much tougher semi-state. Honestly I don’t get the seeding decision here with Centerville not only having a better team on paper, but a better record as well. Centerville advances Cowan vs Adams Central Adams Central’s team has too much fire power for Cowan at this point. Cowan returns 1 guy with semi-state experience compared to the 4 guys the Jets bring back. Cowan is tough in those middle weights, Adams Central has a tough team from top to bottom and that depth will be the difference. Adams Central advances North Posey vs Rensselaer Central North Posey is just a better team at this point in the season than Rensselaer Central. The thing that worries me about them as they advance in the tournament is their lack of “hammers”. While they do have good kids they don’t really have any guys that would pick to win every match that they’re in. North Posey advances Semi-Finals Tell City vs Centerville I think these are the two best teams in the tournament and, again, I don’t get how or why Centerville was seeded so low. There are several weights in this dual that should be good, such as 152 and 160. Centerville will need to get pins where they’re favored because I don’t have them favored to win a lot of these matchups. Tell City advances Adams Central vs North Posey I look forward to some good matchups in this dual but bonus points will be the story here. Looking at similar opponents, North Posey should get a lot of quality wins in this dual. There are only a few spot where I can see Adams Central getting bonus points, there are a lot of weights where I would be surprised if North Posey didn’t pick up bonus points. 195 should be the best match of the dual. North Posey advances Finals Tell City vs North Posey These teams are pretty even matched. For Tell City to give themselves the best chance to win they need to pick up quality wins, specifically a fall, at 126, 138 and 145 where their guys are much better. For North Posey their weights are 170 and 195. Looking at some common opponents, there are a lot of toss up matches in this dual, but when it’s all said and done i see Tell City picking up a lot of bonus points and winning a team state title. • Freshman Of The Year 2019 | Hoosiermat

Freshman of the Year 2019 1/3 Jesse Mendez Crown Point Description: This award goes to the best freshman wrestler in the state. Breakdown: This year’s freshman class was a great one. It yielded 2 state champs, 2 runner-ups, a plethora of state placers. While there are several good freshman there is a clear choice here. Two wins over a defending state champion, one by bonus, and an undefeated season capped off by a state title gives Crown Point’s Jesse Mendez the award here. He has been phenomenal all season, and dominated a tough weight class that had 2 state champions in it. Jesse looks to put his name up there with the greats from Indiana, and is on his way with this stellar freshman year. Notable Wins: Hunter Watts x2 Ray Rioux Logan Wagner Brock Peele x2 Brendon Mark Chase Wilkerson Logan Hill Runner-up: Brennen Cernus, Culver Academies 3rd place: Zeke Seltzer, Cathedral BACK

2019 Champ: Cathedral Scoring (without bonus): 1st....20 2nd...16 3rd....11 4th.....9 5th.....6 6th.....4 7th.....2 8th.....1 Teams in the Race: Brownsburg Logan Miller-1st-20 points Kysen Montgomery-5th-6 points Drake Campbell-5th-6 points Dorian Keys-3rd-11 points Projected Total: 43 points What needs to happen: For Brownsburg to be in contention tow in a title they Keys and Campbell to win big matches. Keys must beat Irick who he has beaten already this season so that isn’t out of the realm of possibilities. The bigger match for them is at 138. For them to have any chance at a title Campbell is going to have to beat Bailey Saturday morning. If he can do this, he not only gives Brownsburg a chance at a title, but also eliminates Cathedral from contention. Miller also has to make the finals and win. Cathedral Zeke Seltzer-1st-20 points Logan Bailey-1st-20 points Elliott Rodgers-4th-9 points Tyler Wagner-7th-2 points Holden Parsons-7th-2 points Projected Total: 53 points What needs to happen: Cathedral has a lot of big matches that need to be won if they want to walk out of Banker’s Life with another state title. Like it was talked about earlier, that match between Bailey and Campbell is huge in the team race. Wagner and Parsons have big matches as well on Saturday. Wagner must beat Sollars and Parsons must beat Swallow. All three of these things must happen, in my opinion, for Cathedral to win a title. We will know if Cathedral will repeat going in the semi-finals this weekend. Chesterton Aidan Torres-6th-4 points Brock Ellis-2nd-16 points Evan Bates-1st-20 points Projected Total: 40 points What needs to happen: Chesterton is a long shot to win the title or even come away with a trophy. They would have to be lights out and go 3 for 3 and get all 3 into the finals, while picking up some bonus along the way. They would also need 2 or 3 of the other guys to find a way onto the podium. If Chesterton can pull off a few upsets Friday and get DeMarco or Layman on the podium, they would be right there in the hunt. Crown Point Sam Goin-5th-6 points Logan Frazier-5th 6 points Riley Bettich-3rd-11 points Stephen Roberson-3rd-11 points Jesse Mendez-1st-20 points Orlando Cruz-5th-6 points Noah Hollendonner-5th-6 points Projected Total: 66 points What needs to happen: Crown Point is in a good spot to win here and may end up doing so. They don’t really anything shocking to walk away with a title. A big match for them is Saturday morning between them and Mater Dei. Mater Dei wins that match and they get a little farther from the rest of the pack. If Cruz, Goin and/or Hollendoner can find a way to get a win Saturday morning it helps them out a lot too. It may just come down to the rest of the field cannibalizing themselves. Evansville Mater Dei Cole Ross-2nd-16 points Alec Freeman-5th-6 points Ashton Hayhust-8th-1 point Kane Egli-4th-9 points Blake Boarman-3rd-11 points Eli Dickens-2nd-16 points Gabe Sollars-3rd-11 points Macartney Parkinson-2nd-16 points Projected Total: 70 points What needs to happen: The obvious match for them is Friday at 182. If Parkinson beats Walker, Mater Dei is in the driver’s seat, but if he doesn’t then their title hopes are all but done here. Sollars has a big one against Cathedral as mentioned earlier. They also have a lot of point left on the table. Boarman could make the finals, or even win it. Freeman could beat Roberson Saturday morning as well. Mater Dei has the highest ceiling of any of the contenders, but also a lower floor than a lot of them. Going into the semifinals they could have this thing wrapped up, or they could be out of it too. Perry Meridian Alex Cottey-1st-20 points Matthew Koontz-2nd-16 points Aiden Warren- 20 points Projected Total: 56 points What needs to happen: Perry must wrestle to the predictions and get all three guys into the finals, which isn’t a cray possibility. I do not think they have a real shot at winning it, but they could take home a trophy for sure. Perry must bank on the rest of the field cannibalizing itself. They need Walker to beat Parkinson. They need Sollars to beat Wagner, and Campbell to beat Bailey. A lot would have to fall their way for them to take home a trophy this weekend. Roncalli Bryce Lowery-2nd-16 points Brayden Lowery-2nd-16 points Alec Viduya-1st-20 points Projected Total: 52 points What needs to happen: Like Perry, Roncalli just must show up and do their part. They need the same breaks perry does, and all three of their guys need to make the finals. The only difference here is that Roncalli can win it if everything goes their way. They could have 3 champs. The Lowerys are going to have to do what they do and get falls. It’s a longshot but it is a possibility. Hoosiermat top 5: 1. Evansville Mater Dei 2. Crown Point 3. Perry Meridian 4. Cathedral 5.
